This is my second pregnancy and I'm having trouble keeping anything down-- the same thing happened with my first. Apparently I have what Kate Middleton has had: hyperemesis gravidarum -- excessive vomiting during pregnancy-- anyone else suffering from this condition?
I was so sick the first time that I wonder now if I had a mild case. I have a friend that had it with both pregnancies and had to be on a Zofran pump. Have you talked to your doc yet?
I have it. I have been the ER twice for fluids and have been given 3 different prescriptions for nausea and finally the Phenergan helped. I was to the point where I hadn't kept a single thing down in 10 days. I'm still nauseas and vomit 3-5 times a day but I can keep some thing down. I'm almost at the 11 week mark so I'm hoping that in the next 3 weeks it starts to ease up. This is my 4th first trimester (1st was a miscarriage at 11wks, 2nd baby was born with Trisomy 18 and I have an almost 4 year old) and each pregnancy has gotten progressively worse.
I have never been officially diagnosed but I'm pretty sure I have it. I had the same problem with my first OB-he didn't tell me what was normal and what was not ok. I would go for several days at a time without keeping anything down at all. This time is a tiny bit better and they gave me some guidelines: she said to watch out for signs of dehydration like dry lips, decreased or dark urine, and dizziness. And if I haven't been able to keep any fluids down for 24 hours then to go to urgent care or the ER for fluids. I wish I would have been told that for my first one. She said try just taking little sips of fluid (at this point pretty much any preg-ok fluid will be good) every 15 min and see if that helps keep it down. I hope that helps
I had told my OB that I had severe nausea and she prescribed me Diclegis which was three digits out of our price range since my insurance wouldn't cover it. A few weeks later (while my husband was out of the country, no less) I was admitted to the hospital. I was severely dehydrated and couldn't keep anything down for 48 hours.
The kept me overnight (I should have stayed another day, but I had company in from out of town that weekend and didn't want the whole weekend ruined for them) to rehydrate me through an IV. That's when they diagnosed me with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I have avoided being readmitted, but I've come close. Thankfully my anti-nausea medication (Zofran) has been helping. I still can't eat like a normal person though. Smells are really starting to nauseate me. And despite my best efforts, I am still losing weight. I have now lost 12 pounds in less than a month since my first OB visit. 10lbs were in the first two weeks leading up to my hospitalization.
Like I explained to my husband. I have okay days in which the Zofran allows me to function. But then I'll have horrible days, like yesterday, that leave me curled up on the floor for hours wishing I weren't pregnant. I've reached out to a local pregnancy crisis center because I realize I'm going to need counseling. Especially if I ever want more than one kid.
I'm hoping my symptoms will fade as the second trimester gets here (I'm 11.5 weeks right now) but I hear that HG may make symptoms last longer, if not throughout the whole pregnancy. (Insert sarcastic smile here)
If you think you have HG...please see a doctor! They need to know to stay on top of your nutrition intake. I know personally, taking prenatals make my HG worse, so I'm worried about getting enough nutrients for my baby.
I haven't yet, but I have spoken with my midwife. She told me to pay close attention to my fluid levels and to go to Urgent Care to get a saline bag if I need to, since dehydration is the main issue in the first trimester. I'm very nervous; things went undiagnosed in my 1st pregnancy because my midwife had never heard of h.g. I have a much better midwife now, but I'm worried about "when," and "how," I know I should seek treatment. I don't currently have an obstetrician.

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry for your losses and your awful sickness! That's so unfair.
But I had HG so bad to the point where in the weeks 8 to 12 I didn't keep a single thing down, i lost 24 pounds. I was on every medication possible and it did help. I was amitted to hospital several times for fluids. The main advice I can give to you is see a doctor or go to the ER if you can't get anything down in 48 hours. It made me feel a lot better being hydrated, HG absolutely sucks!!!! But hopefully for you it does pass, good luck to everyone.
I've lost 11 pounds so far. My midwife and the specialist who does my ultrasounds (he's a retired obstetrician) both told me I have it.
We had an unfortunate trip to Urgent Care where despite my throwing up 4 times in the waiting room alone, had obviously never heard of H.G.
We mentions at the front desk that my doc told me to come in for an I.V. Of saline.
The idiot attending told me I should watch out for appendicitis (after poking my belly roughly, and my flinching as a result).
Then they tried to do blood pressure diagnostics, during which I was dizzy and nearly passed out/fell over. Then, he pronounced me "not dehydrated," -- and asked for a urine sample.
I was only able to pee a tiny, concentrated amount... Which he then decided must be b/c of a UTI.
I don't have appendicitis or a UTI and after talking w. our family friend (another retired obstetrician) we know now to go to the E.R. not U.C. and to insist upon zither saline I.V. with a beforehand call so they know why we're coming in.
I had it w.my first, and my midwife never told me-- I flew and everything! She never told me I had anything more than morning sickbed until after the fact--- negligent! My midwife this go round is more proactive.
H.G. sucks and my heart goes out to you all!
I'm currently on Zofran, which sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. I'm not keeping food down, but liquids seem to be easier sometimes.

This has been so difficult.
