PCOS and pregnant

Anyone else here have PCOS? My DH and I got incredibly lucky and conceived the first time around, but now my head is swarming with worry and feeling like I should have my levels tested and put on progesterone or something to avoid a MC. I saw a nurse practitioner yesterday to confirm my pregnancy with a urine test but nothing else was done in regards to regulating my levels. I might be jumping the gun and assuming I'll have problems out the gate since its my first try, but I'm wondering if I should call to schedule an appointment this week regardless. My next appointment is in 2 weeks and until then I know I'll be sick with anxiety. Any other mamas here have experience with this? Thanks!

Re: PCOS and pregnant

  • I have PCOS too and we also conceived very easily on the first cycle of NTNP.

I got my first positive test on CD70, so I wanted to get to the doctor right away to figure out how far along I was since it was such a long cycle. The first dating ultrasound put me at 4w5d. I had labs done and got a call later in the week that everything looked good. I went back 3 weeks later for my initial OB visit and had blood drawn again, got another call that everything was good.

I meant to ask my doctor about progesterone levels at my second visit but completely forgot. I fully believe if anything looked off, she'd have prescribed something for it. Also, this is my first pregnancy, so no history of loss so far. That may be a factor, too.

So far I haven't had any spotting at all and my symptoms have been consistent so I try to push the worrying aside.

  • @mrsmtothek hello I have pcos too and conceived at the first try. Guess we are lucky:) well my doc said it does not effect the pregnancy so don't worry we will have normal as others after this time. I had my first visit at 4w then at 5w it turned out I was 6w and now my next one is when I am 12w. Everything seems fine. Before my first visit we had a blood test after the home pregnancy that is all. I asked about my progesterone levels and she said don't worry I don't need them as I just saw a heartbeat and the embryo. And didn't do the blood test again. So I hope it works :)
  • I have pcos. I got pregnant 5 years ago and it ended in MC at 5wks4days due to low progesterone so this time they put me on progesterone immediately. I'll be 9 weeks tomorrow but still haven't even seen my dr. My first appt is July 31. I'll be 9 weeks 2 days. So other than putting me on progesterone they don't seem too concerned about getting me in early. I would ask for a blood test if I were you to check your progesterone.

Thanks so much for this. You gave me the confidence and push to ask to get my blood work done! I'll keep you ladies posted!

  • Pregnancy did wonders to my PCOS last time around. It reversed all symptoms, and I had hoped that I would be fixed forever. Not the case unfortunately.

I did have 3 gestational diabetes tests last pregnancy and the first around 8 weeks. Not sure what will happen this time around.
  • I have PCOS and we had been trying for 14 months (3 cycles with femara and metformin) before we finally got our bfp! We are due March 11 which makes me 7 wks 4 days, my fertility doctor says everything looks good. We got to have an ultrasound last week for dating (saw heartbeat) and today we will hear our baby's heartbeat so saying a prayer that everything still looks good. Very nerve wracking as a friend with PCOS just had a second m/c due to low progesterone after seeing a heartbeat. Praying for all of us to have healthy pregnancies. (Also- this is our first baby and after trying so long we found out that my sister is due the week after me with her first! So exciting!!)

I have PCOS as well. This is my second pregnancy. We had to go through infertility treatment cycles both times. I had progesterone level bloodwork drawn during my infertility treatment cycles, but that was to check if I ovulated. Since confirming my pregnancy, I haven't had bloodwork.

With my first pregnancy I asked at my first appointment if they would be checking my progesterone levels since I have PCOS. They told me they only do the bloodwork if I had a history of low progesterone or a past miscarriage.

PCOS is just one more thing for us to worry about, but my last pregnancy was healthy and normal. I've just been trying not to worry. It's very hard though. :)

  • I also have PCOS. We tried for about 2 years and this is our first BFP, so I am spending a LOT of time worrying. Probably more than I should. Im also a nurse so my back hurts a lot after a 12 hour shift, which of course also makes me nervous.
Im trying to stay calm, but I really just want 12 weeks to get here.
    Due March 2016 :)

  • @mrsmtothek I hope I didn't scare you with my daily check in.  I'm just a worrier by nature.  Although I do hope you get peace of mind!

  • @bntfroggie Don't worry, its something that I was concerned about from the get-go and I'm absolutely a chronic worrier as well!! I expected to receive a blood test from my initial appointment and when that didn't happen I found myself wondering and debating getting it done on my own to be proactive. I hope all goes well today for you at your appointment, keep me posted!!

Thanks for all of the support ladies. Its so helpful hearing all of your stories and definitely confirmed that I was right to go and get my levels checked out. Hopefully I'll hear by 5 today, if not I think I'll go crazy all night until tomorrow morning :-S

I have PCOS as well and got pregnant after two months of TTC. I have noticed that being pregnant has helped my hirsutism a little. I have read so much material about having an increase chance of having a miscarriage and gestational diabetes to were I can almost riddle of the numbers. My doctors want to take me of metformin when i reach 12 weeks and I was kinda freaking out about it but I read some thing on here recently about living today and throughout the entire pregnancy there is something to worry about or you can choose to live today in the moment and enjoy being pregnant and that keeps me grounded

  • I also have PCOS and we are expecting our first child. For me, it was a long and grueling process. We did medication, IUI, and finally IVF. I was so convinced nothing would work, but we got the positive pregnancy test after the first embryo transfer. My specialist has been keeping a close eye on everything which all looks great so far, but trying not to worry until I hit 12 weeks is a challenge. I also am on progesterone injections until 8 weeks and then will be on another progestorone source until 10 weeks. It makes me feel better to see so many other PCOS mommies out there.

I also was trying for more than two years and finally got my bfp on my last cycle of clomid with iui (they said our next step would be ivf). I'm also worrying over everything and driving dh crazy! Praying that we all have happy healthy pregnancies!

I was diagnosed PCOS and metformin brought back my period after over a year of not having one naturally. I am 7w1d today going by last scan. My doc mentioned nothing about progesterone supplements and I'm worried and thinking I should have brought it up?? While TTC I never really thought about the worries that would come along once I finally got a BFP! Anyway DH and I are being cautiously optimistic. I can't wait till my 12 week scan, wish I could have an ultrasound everyday! Best wishes to all you PCOS mommas, I'm glad there is a place here for us to connect!

No one brought it up to me either, and honestly, I'm glad I took the initiative to check and see that all was well. You could be within a perfectly normal range, but I always think its better to be safe than sorry! I'm 5 weeks and my progesterone level was 26 ng/ml, they expect you to be within 10-29 ng/ml at this point. So you never know, but I'm glad I do know now. I too am so glad we have a community of PCOS mamas in this month, happy to know we're not alone :)

@mrsmtothek eeeek I can't see my doc until my next appt anyway as I am abroad. I've had three betas done which were great and two ultrasounds which were perfect too and saw the HB last week. According to all my charts everything looks good. Will just hope and pray everything remains that way!!!

  • @ecwk I'm sure you are absolutely fine then!!! Your OB would've indicated if they had a cause for concern. I only saw a nurse practitioner and haven't had any ultrasounds yet. Just take deep breaths and think positive!! :)
