Encapsulation of Placenta

Hi All, just wondering if anyone has any personal experiences from encapsulation of their placenta and what your view and opinion of such a process?

The thought of it makes me gag
  • Here's the last discussion about this: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/87271742#Comment_87271742

Personally, I think it's outlandish, and I can't fathom why people do it. Seems like pseudo-science to me. To each their own, though!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • This just sounds revolting to me.. Not to mention there is no hard evidence that it helps with anything... Ingesting the placenta in anyway just sounds.. Bleh...
  • I did it with my last. It was spendy. I didn't notice any difference and actually still have them in the fridge. I have heard it can help with milk supply so I am thinking of taking it my last few weeks of pregnancy.
  • Meh, I couldn't find any concrete evidence that it's a beneficial thing.  I don't think it's horrible/disgusting, just a little strange and possibly a waste of money.

This plus I saw my last placenta and doesn't look like something I would ever want ingest. DH said it looked like a huge liver. I don't think its horrible or creepy just weird. I understand why people want to try it. Just not for me.
  • Not enough scientific evidence that it is beneficial IMO.

  • I have a question and I hope I don't sound like an idiot. If I am doing delayed cord clamping, does that increase the likelihood that I will have to see my placenta? Don't get me wrong, I am grateful to my placenta and all it does for my baby, but they freak me the eff out and I just want it gone asap.

You do not have to see your placenta.  If I recall, I had to ask to see it before they took it away.  (Morbid curiosity)
I did delayed cord clamping and didn't see it until I asked and my ob was actually super excited to show me and whipped out her scalpel and showed me all the parts of it and what their purpose was. It was really interesting to me.
Then they took it away in a 5(?) gallon ice cream bucket.

..... Now I want to see what it looks like because I'm curious..

@thefithuntress posted a great gif of Khaleesi feasting on flesh the other day, which would fit perfectly right here.

    Edited: past tense is hard
  • To answer the OP, there is no way I would do this. There is absolutely no evidence of medical benefit, it is very expensive and absolutely no quality control or regulation to ensure cleanliness or that you are even getting your own placenta.

5 gallon?! I must have no concept of how large the placenta is.

  • I did it with my first. There's a significant history in my family of mental disorders and I am VERY concerned about the possibilities for post partum depression which what the appeal was for me--supposed to offset it. I found someone online, called her and set up the exchange.

Some hospitals REFUSE to release the placenta because it is a human organ being removed from the hospital. I told them I was doing it for religious reasons (some cultures bury it) and had all the paperwork done.

It's just like taking a vitamin. You can't tell it's a placenta when you take the pills bc it's dried and ground into powder.
