Foley Balloon Induction

41 weeks pregnant and FTM. I have a scheduled induction for Wednesday. The first method of induction is the "foley balloon" to help me dilate then slow pitocin on lowest dose to help me from there. I've been a fingertip dilated since 38 weeks cervix is thinning but I'm not progressing. My BP has been all over the place and we've been struggling with low fluid. Any moms have this balloon method with their induction? How was it? Painful, effective? Feeling nervous.

Re: Foley Balloon Induction

  • Hello there i had the foley bulb procedure done with my DD. I was so nervous to be induced but it was actually not bad at all. The foley bulb was put in Sunday morning. It did immediately start contractions for me but after an hour or so they stopped. I continued to have contractions that entire night on and off. I went to hospital at 7:30 am and was dilated to 3.5 cm. started the pitocin, contractions got a little more intense. I got the epidural at 4 cm which was around 10 am. BEST DECISION EVER! I labored painlessly for 10 more hours and delivered at 8:46 pm. Only had to push for 16 minutes I would do it all over again the exact same way. Good luck!! Nothing can compare to meeting your LO for the first time

  • Thank you. I have a pretty high pain tolerance (I think...we will find out) and I hope it all works out. I get mixed reviews on the foley. I am just wanting to meet my little one. The last few weeks have been so stressful with the complications I've been having that I think it's best to just have her here. Not really progressing so hope that doesn't set back the process.
  • I'm being Induced tomorrow too!!! Good luck to you :-)
  • I had this after Cervadil didn't work and then had pitocin ... My best advice especially if you aren't dilated or effaced is get the epidural ASAP (doesn't hurt a bit) My dr told me this advice and the two hours it took for my anesthesiologist to get to me was brutal. I had to have stadol to calm me down and that wasn't my birth plan.
  • I had this on July 8th had my precious baby the next day...it was not bad at all and worked great ...good luck
  • Just got the foley bulb in. Not bad at all. Definitely tolerable. Just had to make sure to relax.
  • I had the foley bulb as well. It wasn't painful just really uncomfortable. What my doctor told me was that the foley bulb will dilate me to 4 cm and then the next morning they would start pitocin on me. I on the other hand was very lucky and started my contractions on my on. They did say normally you don't start contractions with the bulb and that is why they give you pitocin later on. I was really glad I didn't have to get pitocin cause I've heard all the stories about it. After taking out the bulb I was already at 4 cm. I also got my epidural not too long afterwards. I then labored for about 12 hours, when time came to push I had him in about 15 min. I would totally do it all over again, foley induction worked perfectly for me. Good luck hun!
  • Yes. It's not terrible. Nothing to compare the "pain" (more discomfort) to other than kidney stones. It stays in for 12-18hrs but I'm praying it falls out sooner which means I progressed to a 3-4cm. I'm slow pitocin now just waiting for the hours to pass and go from there.
