moms with kids- question about keeping kids busy

So those of you with one or more kids already, what are you doing in this heat to keep your kid(s) entertained?

I just don't have much energy and don't want to be out in the heat.  But I need to keep my 2 1/2 year old DD entertained without spending much (if any) money.

Please share your ideas.

Re: moms with kids- question about keeping kids busy

  • We've been doing a lot of forts lately. Putting pennies in their piggy banks (I just keep the banks out and remove the pennies once they are in bed for the next day.) Stickers, painting, colouring, and baking are always good time killers. The sandbox, when it's not too hot or raining, has been a real sanity saver too.

  • Last summer my DD was around 2. We have a little inflatable pool she likes to play in, and a table thingy you can fill up with water and/or sand for tinkering around with (you could also just use a plastic tub of some description). Now it's winter here, she is really into stickers, drawing and duplo, which would also work for summer weather I guess. Hot summers are tough with LOs!!
  • Swimming and all of our Regal Cinemas have $1 movies. See if yours do! My kids don't always make it through the whole movie but it's only $1

  • Lots of Lego time, pool time and inside sports-he has a basketball hoop and a t ball set. I'm so burnt out after work that I'm just trying to keep him busy and happy at this time. He also has his iPad time and watches lots of phonics videos which is paying off because he says his entire ABC's now :)

  • Its a good time of year to buy a sprinkler, even though it's still summer most stores are gearing up for back to school so they have their summer stuff on clearance. And a fun indoor thing is playing with shaving cream on a table. You can get some cheap foam shaving cream for $1 and spay it on the table then spread it out a little and your little one can draw in it, and its very easy clean up because as she is drawing and rubbing on it the shaving cream will disappear and leave a thin film behind that wipes right up. I used to do it at the day care i worked at with the 2 & 3 year olds and they would have so much fun with it.
  • We have a six and four year old and I'm pretty sure the best $100 we ever was spent was on a small indoor trampoline. They use it more than any toy they have! We also have a water table on the back deck. I keep the door open and they come and go on their own but it's enclosed and where I can see them so I don't have to sit out there and sweat to death. I also bought back to school work books, especially for the six year old, and we do a little "homework" each day which she really likes.

It's brutal hot so I definitely feel you! Good luck and stay cool :)
  • I've been taking a lot of library trips because it's been so hot out. Our library has a huge kids section, train tables, games, iPads etc. and I can just sit and watch ha

I've also been swapping out toys and bringing them out later like its the first time he's seen it, that helps keep him interested and he's good at entertaining himself.

As @breezymeema7 said we also do a lot of piggy bank play. Sorting the coins then dropping them in entertains him for quite some time.

Finally, we definitely have been watching more movies then I would like to but giving myself some slack. Won't be like this forever.

  • Playdoh, markers, stickers, indoor slide and trampoline, the splash pool at our YMCA. Otherwise I am relieved to have 2 kids that can entertain each other. There are many days where it's non stop fighting but yesterday they played together all day without fighting. It was Christmas in July for me to relax on the couch most of the day :)

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  We are doing a lot of these, but I feel like DD is getting tired of a lot of it.  I feel like we are watching a lot of TV lately, but I also feel as though DD's vocab is really increasing because of it, so I should focus on the positive!

Since today is supposed to be the hottest day of the week, we are going to stay in and bake some cookies.

  • If we are home we do the kiddie pool/sprinkler/sandbox in the back yard. If we are going out we go to the pool or splash pads.

  • Ive been inviting friends over for playdates. I've also used this summer as a "learning" time. My DD is 6 and figured it was time to teach her some things like sewing, baking and gardening. Nothing crazy, she has made her own banana bread, zucchini bread, some muffins, pancakes. She does everything except use the oven when we do it. I taught her to sew on a kid machine, she made herself a pillowcase, a little purse and a pair of pj pants.
I also have two 15 year old brothers. They have been going to the pool with us and taking her swimming to help with the days when I am really need time to just sit.

  • coloring, painting and playdough have really topped the charts.  We did side-walk chalk last night for about 20 minutes in the evening when it wasn't so bad.  When I sat down on the steps apparently I made some grunting noises, because when my 3 year old sat down next to me, she mimicked them.

  • we have a pool, spend most of our time in it, because its too hot to do anything else. When i'm too whooped to be out in the sun, I take em to a movie, or let em watch one at home and make popcorn in our movie theater style popper and make them think we're at the theater. Turn out the lights and when the make noise, hush them like an usher! ;)
