measuring small...worried!!!

Went to the doc today for my 38 week check up..right before I am about to leave the doctor comes back in and tells me that I have been measuring 35 weeks for the last 3 appointments and because of that they want to do an ultrasound. Has anyone else had this happen? what were your results? Any input would be greatly appreciated as I go in Friday for the ultrasound.  I am eager to know what anyone else has been through!!!

Thanks!!!

Re: measuring small...worried!!!

  • I was and still am measuring behind at 38w4d. The growth ultrasound and continuous BPP's show LO as measuring small. However, ultrasounds (especially at this stage) are just a guesstimate. I wouldn't worry until there is something to worry about. I know it is easier said than done. But there are other factors involved. Just because your fundal height is a little off doesn't mean the baby is small or that something is wrong. In my case I am being induced next week so LO can receive the nutrients he/she needs to aid in growth. Try to relax and see what happens on Friday. GL!

  • That's me , I started measuring small my last appointment I'm also 38 weeks as of today. Last appointment the nurse practitioner had me go to the hospital to get the height and weight. and I seen doctor today he said he wants to induce me when I'm 39 weeks which will be Tuesday because baby is small . ( around 4pounds or right under 5) Original due date was the 11th .
  • This happened to me last week at my 36 week appointment. I went for my ultrasound Friday and baby is actually measuring ahead 2 weeks and everything is fine. Try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know). I was worrying myself sick over it but doctor said today that I have a healthy baby boy and these measurements are just estimates. Thoughts and prayers for you and baby and that you won't worry your self sick like I did.
  • My last appointment I measured at 34 and I was 35...I asked if I was measuring small and he said that this late in the 3rd trimester the measuring isn't as accurate because your belly can drop because of baby getting in position etc. Also he said 3 weeks ahead or behind was within "normal" range. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your doctor's are worried.
  • At my last appointment before going into labor I was 37 weeks measuring 34. I was seeing a different doctor than usual and he seemed concerned that my primary ob hadn't ordered any growth ultrasounds. He sent me to get one, I ended up having the baby 2 days later before ever getting the results back. My girl was small... 5 lb 6 oz At 37wk/5days. But she is perfectly healthy! She is 11 days old and already up to 5 lb 8 oz and she breastfeeds well!
  • Me 2. I've been 3-5 weeks behind in belly measurements since they started. I had 3 weeks where my measurement didn't change so I caved into getting the ultrasound. Everything looks good. Baby is just small try not to worry and if the ultrasound will help reassure you then it can only be a good thing ☺️.
  • At 33 weeks I was only measuring for 31 weeks.. I was so worried, but I had an ultra sound and to our surprise baby is measuring rather large!! Head circumference at that point was in the 98th percentile, belly was 96th, baby's weight was around 7 lbs.. and the ultra sound technician said his legs were "VERY long for a Caucasian baby.." Hubby and I had a good laugh over that.. (Since we are both in fact Caucasion..Thinking she might have been questioning something!) my first baby was born at 10 lbs 2 oz and 22 inches and the midwives said "they had no idea he was so big" :/ ugh my point like many others, they can be so far off.. So try not to worry too much! Hope everything turns out well :)
  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. This happened in my first pregnancy as well as my second. I have never measured more than 33cm for both pregnancies (still pregnant with #2) and had multiple ultrasounds to make sure baby was growing. DS was born at 39w1d completely naturally at home and was 6lbs 12oz (not a big baby but still a very good size). I am sure your midwife/OB will be checking babies growth :D
  • Wow thank you so much everyone for your stories!! I saw a different doc then I normally do at the appointment and she seemed concerned why my other doctor hadn't said anything, that was my signal for "uh what's wrong with the baby" mode. I may have baby sooner then friday, contractions woke me up last night that were really painful but then after an hour they were gone. I lost part of the mucus plug last night and I think little guy is gearing up to make his debut!!
  • Just know their measurments are always B.S. They told me a week before i had my son he was measuring around 9lbs. I was freaking out. 8 days after that i delivered an 8lb 5oz baby.
  • I had one at 31 weeks for the same thing and baby was all on par. Again today I had an ultrasound for the same reason. I'm 36 weeks and baby measures good. It's just the way I'm carrying the baby. Nothing to worry about!!
  • I chose to be part of nutrition and exercise in pregnancy study being carried out by one of the universities in, which includes growth scans at 28 and 36 weeks. Both times baby was measuring an average of about 2 1/2 weeks behind. I asked the sonographer how acurate the assessment is and she said not very accurate at all! I wouldn't worry if you have no other indicators that there is something wrong with your little one.
