Been having contractions for two weeks straight! Still only at a 1.5 Been hospitalized twice to manage and monitor contractions keep getting sent home because I'm not dilating. I'd really like to avoid having to be induced! How can I naturally help aid dilation?

Re: How to help Dilation?

  • There are many threads on this same topic. Try searching for "natural induction" and "dilation." There are also many myths such as sex, walking, birthing ball, pinapple, spicy food, etc. Of course please run any you may try by your doctor first. Some methods may or may not work- your LO will arrive when ready. Also, your body will progress naturally. I walk 3 to 5 miles a day and went from 1.5 to 4cm in 2 days. Just like all of pregnancy - everyone is different. Hang in there!

  • I've heard that making circles with your hips while sitting on a birthing ball helps a ton! I have also found that it's just kind of entertaining when you put the right music on. Also, squatting during contractions and obviously walking.
  • I'm really skeptical of the whole "natural ways to dilate" bit. Maybe I'm just special, but I haven't done anything to move my body closer to delivery, yet my cervix has been dilating the past month on its own and I'm already at 4cm and 90% effaced.

Unfortunately, even though it's rough and uncomfortable, I think your body is just going to do what it needs to on its own. Even pitocin and other induction meds are not guaranteed to dilate you. I mean, failure to progress/dilate is the reason some inductions end in cesareans.

I really hope you get some relief soon though. Those contractions must suck :(
