Any advice from mommas who been induced?

So from a previous post I stated that I will be getting induced on 8/4 (my original due date was 8/11)
Any advice on how to mentally and physically prepare myself for this ?

I'm honestly starting to get really nervous the more I think about it (I'm trying not too think so much on it) . Although I am excited it's overwhelming In a way. Lol

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

  • Hi there! Why are you being induced? And is it your first baby?

  • I was induced with my first. It's all I know. My husband went to breaks before and I had oatmeal and fruit. It gave me a lot of energy. I walked in and couldn't stop looking at the baby warmer as they started my iv and meds. They said we aren't letting you leave without a baby and all the sudden it was real. They started Potocin and for me out took a few hours before I felt anything. At our hospital they said I had to be monitored at all times because of the medication. I wish I had asked for portable monitors so I could still walk around. Once it kicked in I didn't realize how many hours it had been. Honestly it wasn't ideal but it wasn't bad. Everyone is different but prepare to be anxious the night before. I didn't sleep. Good luck.
  • Ditto, I wish I'd asked for portable monitors for my induction. I was two weeks overdue and not dilated, so they started me with a misprostol (sp?) insert.  I had to stay laying down for that, but once it was clear I was in labor I wish I'd gotten up and walked.  Yes the drugs do a lot of the work for you, but whatever you can do to help it along is good. Start to finish though it was about ten hours or a little less, so not too bad.

Yes this is my first baby , and because at my appointment last week I started measuring small when baby had dropped weeks ago and I was fine before that last appointment. The same day the nurse practitioner had me go to the hospital to get a US Because she wanted to know baby's height &weight which turned out to be somewhere right under 5 pounds . Then at my appointment yesterday I seen doctor he looked at everything that's going on , asked if when I contracted was uncomfortable (because I was contracting on I laid on the table) then also asked when I was going to be 39 weeks and said he wants to induce me that day because baby is small . He also said baby can just be genetically small or could be because placenta isn't giving him things he needs to grow or who knows what and they wanted to keep track of his growth which doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Other then that he's healthy and perfectly fine .
  • I was past my due date and not dilated at all, so I was induced with my first. I didn't have to check into the hospital until 5PM, and my nephew had a snow day off from school so I picked him up and we hung out all day. It was a great distraction.

My goal had been to go med free, and I made from 7PM (when my water broke due to the Cervadil and my labor started on it's own- without Pitocin) until about 2PM the next day before the doctor told me that my body was in too much pain to relax and dilate. I got the epidural and it was beautiful. I even fell asleep after that. I never dilated past a 3 and ended up having a cesarean. Total labor time: 29 hours (ish- I was in labor when I checked in but not contracting very hard and didn't even really realize it).

It sounds awful. It wasn't much fun. BUT it's just a memory and a story now. I have an amazing little girl that spent 15 minutes last night kissing me (she's about 18 months, so it's kind of just putting her mouth on my face) and I can't imagine my life without her. 29 hours of horribleness and I wouldn't trade a singe second of it simply because of the amazing result. I can't tell you to not be nervous, but I can tell you that before you know it, it will simply be a memory. Once our LOs are here, time will fly and the next thing we know, we will be toting toddlers around and planning birthday parties.

    Good luck with everything!

  • @victoriaaa1 was baby under the 10th percentile? We had to induce last week for that reason too, the placenta was just crapping out. Good luck!!

My first was induced because he was late and they thought big. You had the advantage of knowing when you'll head in. There's no last minute packing or uncomfortable car ride! My biggest piece of advice is to do everything you can to sleep the night before. Feedings are every 3 hours after they are born which doesn't leave time to sleep.
My Dr broke my water first to see of that would start anything. From that point on you are basically leaking. I did need pitocin to start contracting. Walking and the yoga ball were what I was planning on using to labor, but there was no way I was walking around leaving a gooey trail behind me and down my legs! Yuck.
There's no prize for doing med free, and IMO an epidural is worth its weight in gold.
Lastly, if they do give you pitocin, know that it and the bags of fluid tend to make you swell so you may be very, very swollen for a while after. Like tree trunks for calves/feet. I found flip flops the best shows for going home.
    Good luck!!
