Re: Do and Dont's of food

  • List of safe foods this is the list we're given here in NZ from our ministry of health. Ask  your MW or OB they should have a list of foods, or be able to direct to you a good source of info.

Other than the high mercury fish (of which you CAN apparently eat very sparingly - i eat sea bass about once a month if i want it and several doctors have told me that's just fine) you can eat anything.

Seriously, you can eat anything. Think about China. They eat EVERYTHING. On top of that, they have a one child policy And there are still more than a billion of them. And their kids are performing just fine.

I'd say use your judgment. If the establishment looks dirty, don't eat ANYTHING there. If it looks clean, you're safe to eat pretty much anything. Cook at home, wash fruits and veg and make sure you keep your fridge clean and healthy.

But no, old wives tales like "parsley puts you into labor" or "Hummus makes your baby die" are complete bunkum.
  • Eat the food- unless it seems sketch then don't eat it. Use moderation. Or don't.

I'd say the only food I'm actively trying to avoid is McDonald's. Because it's not food.

My cat loves a nibble of A&W. Of Wendy's and Five Guys. But she turns her nose up at McDonald's and will even back away from it. Most animals do and when even insects avoid it, it's probably not something you want to give your growing fetus.

I doubt eating it once or twice does any damage. I'm just personally avoiding it. I have not had the same luck with taco bell. I've eaten that.
  • I agree with @groovylocks the only thing my Dr said to limit was tuna, or fish high in Mercury. I've never heard not to eat deli meat, over easy eggs, soft serve ice cream until I joined here. I love my eggs and subway just the way they are !
  • I had a Philadelphia roll last week (salmon, cream cheese cucumber/avacado) everything in moderation. I was told if it didn't make me sick prepregnancy than its fine especially since salmon is low mercury. I eat lunch meat once or twice a week as well. And my boy is healthy as can be.
  • Ehh, there are some good answers here....some may be kinda long and confusing babble about cats or something else irrelevant to your question... so I figured this link would be a little more helpful. Happy eating!

  • I eat and drink pretty much anything. EXCEPT alcohol. Good thing I know how to make non alcohlic drinks! :)) But as long as eat in moderation, and not over do it, you're good. I always microwave lunchmeat, if and when I eat it. Or I fry it up. Which is even better to do. It cooks most of the bad bacteria out. So far, I haven't had issues. And everything is going well!
  • I'm avoiding cold cuts, sushi (I avoid uncooked fish regardless), things with raw or undercooked eggs (eggs over easy, caesar dressing, etc.) and meat cooked anything but well-done (have been avoiding burgers and steaks because I think we'll-done burgers and steaks are gross. These are all things my doctor told me to do, so I'm listening.

I'm also avoiding things with artificial sweeteners (diet coke -my fave) and nitrates (I buy nitrate free, grass fed hot dogs because I love hot dogs in the summer). Oh! And cow's milk. I'm trying to avoid the antibiotics added to dairy and meat.

Lol at the mental image of hotdogs eating grass
  • Regarding what to eat, all my doctor said:
"Use common sense, cook your food and make sure your dairy is pasteurized. There is very little you can do that will actually hurt your baby. Don't smoke crack, but really most babies exposed to crack end up ok."

I love my doctor. I have been mostly avoiding caffeine and alcohol, raw fish and meat, unpasteurized cheese, sketchy purveyors of food and high mercury fish. I have been eating burgers medium and steak medium rare, runny yolks, lunch meat, hot dogs, bacon etc. When we were in utero these food rules didn't exist, and most of us are just fine!
  • Honestly my doctor told me if I've not gotten sick/food poisoning from it before then anything is okay in moderation. I love sushi. I have sushi about once a month and our baby boy is just fine. As some of the poster's have stated, use common sense and moderation and everything will be okay :)
