Sleeping positions and hip pain

I know that technically you cabcan sleep on your back with no worries. I have heard this straight from my doctor but i still try and sleep on my side because I'm a worrier! Haha. But does anyone else get hip pain from sleeping on there sides?! It doesn't matter which side my hips ache half way through the night.
Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this?!

Re: Sleeping positions and hip pain

  • Yes my hips ache too. Have you tried propping the top leg up with pillows. I find it helps x

  • I have had that problem too! I bought a mini maternity pillow that supports my belly and goes between my legs to align my hips. It has been a lifesaver! I still wake up in the middle of the night on my back sometimes, but I know I am sleeping most of the night on my side. My doctor isn't worried about side mostly sleeping until the 3rd trimester.
  • I've gotten to the point where I have to sleep with a pregnancy pillow or else my hips, back, and shoulders hurt really bad and I can't sleep. Maybe try that? If not you can get a cheap body pillow and cuddle it then fold a flatter regular pillow in half length wise and prop it behind your back. This will align your hips and help with the aching.

Also eat a banana or drink a gatorade before bed to increase your potassium. That helps a ton as well.
  • Glad I'm not the only one ladies! I do have a full body pregnancy pillow.. That helps a bit but not too much! My poor husband has no room in our bed because of it! :))

I'm dealing with the same issue - I wound up getting a full- length maternity pillow, putting an extra pillow on top of the belly section, and putting a regular body pillow behind it. I still have to turn over once a night, but overall it's so much better. My husband calls it the couch on the bed. :))
  • I've had terrible hip pain with all 3 of my pregnancies. The only thing I found that held is to have a pillow between my lets and ankles AND to prop a pillow up behind my back. That way I'm leaning a bit toward the back and it takes the pressure off my hips. I went from waking up in agony 4+ times a night to getting up just once with mild pain.
  • I have the worst hip pain ever but it's only in my right hip. I'm up for suggestions
  • I got a three inch memory foam matress topper which helped. My chiropractor also told me toake sure I'm not throwing my top leg over my bottom leg when I'm sleeping on my side. Keeping my legs lined up with a pillow in between helps.
  • I've always slept on my side, but I started experiencing hip pain around 13 weeks.  I managed it for a while by sleeping with a pillow between my legs, but that doesn't seem to be working anymore.

@bookishkitty - Do you just use regular pillows?

We have a mem foam top as well but I still get horrible hip pain, I've tried pillows between the leg but I toss and turn so much in the night I end up taking it out. I think it's just one of those things i need to suck up and and hope it's short term.
  • I have had terrible hip pain on both sides, I'm now sleeping propped up in a sitting position with lots of pillows.
  • I have been having horrible hip pain this pregnancy. I sleep with a body pillow and a ton of pillows surrounding me. I don't remember this much hip pain before, but it has been 6 years... I seem to have more hip pain on the hip that I'm laying on. So I try to change positions frequently. I wish all you ladies luck!
  • Definitely found this post at the right time! I have woken up two separate times with my right leg so numb that I can't move it and it feels like it is on fire. Are the pregnancy pillows the big c shaped ones?
  • Yes I too get hip pain, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night and placing a round pillow on my lower back (I prop myself up) and that alleviates the discomfort. The idea of eating a banana for potassium is great, however if you've got gestational diabetes be careful with the sugars!
  • I have hip pain on my right side especially when I sleep but I think I have a pinched nerve because my butt, leg and back will have intense pain shooting through them. My doctor is against seeing the chiropractor so I have learned to lay on my left side and when I get comfortable my husband props up big pillows behind me to keep me from moving during the night.
  • I just use regular pillows between legs supporting stomache and under my head

My hip pain has been so bad this week from sleeping on my side. I'm not very big yet so belly doesn't need support and putting pillows between my knees doesn't help. There has got to be a solution.
  • Glad to see I'm not the only one out there experiencing this bothersome hip pain! I first noticed it at about 12 weeks and it's been non stop ever since. I saw a different doctor at my ob office and she acted like I was crazy when I told her my hips were sore, burning, achy, and almost like they fell asleep in the middle of the night with a tingling sensation. She offered no solution except icy hot cream, ice or heat therapy, or muscle relaxers. I've also tried the body pillow but that doesn't seem to help alot. If I sleep partially on my side but with a pillow on my back to lean on, I can get comfortable in that in between side/back sleep position.
Good luck to everyone in finding relief!!
  • I'm a side sleeper normally but when I'm pregnant it's so uncomfortable for me. I have to have like 6 pillows (and then there is no room left in bed for my husband!). I've found that I am most comfortable sleeping on my back, propped up (like half sitting) on the couch. I still try to sleep in bed but by the end of my pregnancy I wake up about 3 times a night. So I start in bed then when I wake up I switch to the couch, then if j wake up again I go back to the bed. The change helps me get comfortable again and fall back asleep instead of being up all night after i wake up. But really the firmness of the couch gives me so much better support and I sleep better. And I don't feel guilty about sleeping on my back because I am propped up instead of flat.
  • I tend to find myself waking up on my stomach. I woke up today in a panick bc I don't know how long I was sleeping like that. Some night its uncomfortable, other nights, it the only way I can get rest. Can I be harming my baby? I'm only 8wks but it freaked me out this morning. Does anyone else have this issue? I have my first OB appt on Monday.

Ugh I sympathize with all of you! My right hip pain is all day and all night, and it's excruciating. I'm only sleeping MAYBE 3 hours of interrupted sleep a night. For the past week or two at night, I also have started to get what I think is nerve pain (my skin in that area feels like it has needles in it!). I sleep with a belly bean, a body pillow, and a couple regular pillows, which makes me a little more comfortable.. but I'm still pretty miserable. My doctor told me i just have to deal with it, cuz its only going to get worse for me.. :( I hope you all find some relief!
