Hi Ladies!

I am trying to save money, and have been going to garage sales etc and buying gently used clothes and blankets. Do you think this is okay to do? I have been washing them and they all come from smoke free and pet free homes... Need some advice I have gotten some new clothes from family, but on my own just buying gently used clothes. FTM

  • What would be wrong with that? More power to you thrifty mama. Lots of used clothes are perfectly fine, just be sure to wash them and you're good. I also have a combo of new clothes from family and impulse buys plus used clothes. Not worried about it at all and I have saved lots of money!

  • I initially was planning on doing yard sales and second hand stores for all my clothes but DH had this really weird reaction. I think it's silly to buy brand new everything but that's what we're doing. We did buy a used swing (we're taking off the fabric bits and washing them) and play mats (again washing the fabric bits). I don't see much of a difference between this and clothing. You should wash it whether it's new or not. If it weren't for DH's reaction, I'd be buying used cloths too. Of all the things he could have an opinion on, this and the nursery theme were his only things. He's such a weirdo.

  • So long as you wash everything and it's not moldy or something it's perfectly fine! Really it's crazy to buy brand new when they're only in the clothes a few weeks...

Idk why I guess I thought I was needing to buy more new clothes but honestly I have seen clothes on tbr floor etc at the stores to and you just never know. I'm 34 weeks and starting to wash clothes already in case baby comes early. Just trying to save money! And I have gotten such great deals buying at garage sales!

Hahaha that's hilarious! Men are so funny! We are moving to another state when our baby is born about 3 months after so I'm trying yo save save save!
We bought a bassinet that was very gently used and a car seat but I got all new padding for the car seat and changed it out already
  • EBay has something called clothing lots where people sell huge amounts of clothes for a cheap price there's usually great photos of all the clothes in the lot. I'd look there
  • Nothing wrong with that at all! You go girl!
  • I bought a ton of clothes at a consignment event in our town. I just washed them all when I got home.
  • There's definitely nothing wrong with that! I just got a bag of clothes from a friend of mine n some baby's shoes, omg I was so excited like if everything was brand new lol
I hope I'll get more!!! Hahaha
  • Most of my first son's clothes were used and now my new guy will be wearing those. They grow so quickly it gets really expensive to try to keep up with new clothes.
  • Mine are all half new half used, I see no issues with it
  • I bought used clothes by the trash bag full for sooo cheap, and told my friends if they want to do gifts, DON'T buy clothes! it seems super wasteful to me to spend upwards of $10 for a single outfit when I can get a trash bag of gently used clothes for $20!

Your baby will dirty them (can we say "blowouts"?!) and should fly through sizes pretty quick. No reason to spend tons and I find thrifted clothes all the time. They have to pass my test: no rips, no stains, no odors.

  • That's what I've done too and see no problem with it! May as well save $!! :)
  • So often babies outgrow clothes so quickly, I think this is a great idea! I started buying lots used when DD1 was about 6 months. Some of our best finds evem had the tags still on.
I'm finding it harder to find quality clothes as she gets older because kids seem to wear out 2t and up. All the power to you!
  • I loved all my yard sale finds! Clothes, changing pad, grocery cart cover, car window shades... I washed everything with dreft and gave it a good once over before using. My mom and I would each take $20 in singles and that lasted us three days of yard saling. It was a lot of fun!
  • I've only bought used clothes. All great condition for 50 cents a piece versus 5-10 dollars a piece. Nothing wrong at all.
  • With my first son, I would say maybe 75% of his clothes were second hand. Either consignment, thrift store or hand me downs. But with this one, also a boy, probably 95% of his clothes are hand me downs from my son or my nephews. Absolutely nothing wrong with it! I can't imagine how much money we have saved doing this.

Not knocking buying new, we just can't afford it. I love finding things at a good deal :)
  • There isn't anything wrong with gently used clothes. That's a good portion of my son's closet. Of course I've analysed them prior to purchasing and washed them. I'm a single first time mom, and so I'm on a tight budget. Brand new clothes are nice, but at least with the used ones, they're already broken in and comfy for him. Good luck dear!

I got all of the clothes for lo from my sister and yard sales, I already washed them and have them put away so I don't think there is anything wrong with it... I also bought a used bassinet and cosleeper (one for parents house) and my car seat and stroller were hand me downs from my sister (exp date still good) so I guess that's my long drawn out way of me saying I agree with the other people saying it's fine just wash it first .... You will get a lot more for your money getting gently used then you will with brand new ...

Nothing wrong with it as long as you wash it :) honestly with the clothes at the store you have no idea who touched it, how many times it's been on the floor, what happened during transportation, if it was tried on, used or returned. The only thing with buying new is you can get different colors and sizes and return what you don't need or doesn't fit. The only things I feel should be new are the mattresses and changing pad since you can't really clean those all the way through.
  • I totally buy used in general often times u can still find it with the tag on it! I haven't had the opportunity to buy our son anything because my mil has filled our closet with clothes in all sizes right up to 12 mo. And I got my big stuff from my shower so all I have bought are toys and stuffed animals, the stuffed animals are used but were steam cleaned in the washer :) cheap decorating ftw! Buy used when u can!
  • This is my sons closet. Clothes up to 24 months 75% gently used. Spent less than $150 on all of it.
  • 90% of our sons clothes are gently used hand me downs from his just turned one year old cousin!! :) All like new! We saved SO much money from all my sisters goodies she gifted us. Such a blessing.
  • If you have a "once upon a child" near you, I bought more than just clothes from there!
  • Hello yeah it's ok! It's smart to stock up on used. Kids are messy and clothes get ruined anyway. Try totspot app if you haven't already.

You bought a used car seat? Totally not jumping on ya here - do you know the person you bought it from and the history? Im totally on board for buying used clothing, jumpers, ect ... but I draw the line and refuse to buy a used car seat. Totally not worth it IMO. Sure you can change the padding but you cant fix a crack or something that messes with the integrity of the actual seat - sometimes you cant see those. But do make sure if you got new padding it came from the manufacturer so its safe for use.
