Heart arrhythmia

Hi, ladies! I just thought I would share this in case anyone else is going through/will go through it, because i had a lot of questions that I understand a little more now.

Two weeks ago I went in for a normal appt. and the doctor didn't like what she heard on the doppler- the heart was skipping a beat every 4-5 beats. I could even hear it. She sent me right to L&D, where a perinatologist did an ultrasound and baby girl was monitored for an hour or so. The whole time was like torture, because I could hear her little heart skipping that beat. I was shaking uncontrollably from the anxiety of not knowing if this was a problem, and no one had said anything yet about how it could be totally normal. Finally, the perinatologist was able to calm my nerves and explained that usually these things are just an immaturity of the heart valves, and fix themselves either by delivery or during (delivery kick starts the internal organs, lungs, and heart to work the way they should). However, they did prescribe less stress, no caffeine, and more rest.

Anyway, I now am being asked to go in for twice weekly monitoring, and she has looked better and better each time. Today's appt. looked completely normal with just one "hiccup" in her heartbeat.

Last week, she rolled over on her cord during the monitoring, causing a small break in the heartscan. That led to 4 hours at the hospital of extended monitoring to make sure it was her rolling on her cord and not a bigger issue. Four hours later, they said she was just fine.

Anything with the heart can definitely be scary, but arrhythmia is common and usually not a problem for baby as an adult.

Wow that's scary! So sorry you had to go through all that. Sending t&p that LO continues to get better!
  • Hopefully it is nothing to be worried about but you can see a pediatric cardiologist while you are still pregnant (either to put your mind at ease or to figure out what may be going on) and not only have you little one checked out by him or her now but also have the cardiologist there to check out baby right after birth. This was done with one of my boys because an anatomy scan showed that his aorta valve may have been to thin, and it was and because we had been prepared with the cardiologist my boy had surgery before he had any complications from it.
  • I'm glad everything is turning out great for you guys! Still sending some thoughts and prayers your way!
  • Thinking of you and hoping for the best!!
