Night time nappy changing

There's going to probably be a lot against and for the discussion but I would like to know...

So I was discussing with a friend how annoying it is changing LOs nappy at night time as it seems to wake her up a lot more and it gets harder to put her to sleep. My friend then told me she doesn't change her sons nappy once he goes down for his proper night sleep which I thought was a bit weird but then I tried it and she was right it does make a big difference but I'm not sure if I'd be game to do this every night... I was wondering what everyone else's opinions were on this topic and what you all do with your LOs?

I don't change him unless he wakes up 100% or he's uncomfortable. Usually, he's totally fine with just pee until the morning... If he poops, I always change him. Hasn't had a diaper rash yet! I just don't think there's any reason to wake a sleeping baby unless absolutely necessary ☺️

I suppose I could see where it would "be okay" not to... I mean, some nights my LO sleeps from 10p-6a. On those nights, I don't wake her up to change her... so hypothetically I suppose their isn't necessarily anything wrong with not changing them in the middle of the night for feeds... as it's basically the same as if they slept through the night. That being said... I wouldn't want to be in a wet diaper any longer than I had to be once I was awake (just seems negligent I suppose). For night feeds, I change my LO first, then feed her... that way the feeding calms her right back down after the change. Maybe you could try that? Doing the change after would never work for me since I rely on the bottle to get her 90% back to sleep.

This exactly! I've had the pee leak out once so obviously I changed her at that time.

I don't change DS until he is completely awake. Obviously if it's bothering him I am quick to make it all better, but otherwise I wait until he is up for the day. He only wakes up once a night anyways. No diaper rashes for us either so far and he has never had a dirty diaper at night, just wet

My LO goes to bed at 7:00, I wake him to nurse and change his diaper at 10:30 and then I don't change it unless he poops until he gets up for the day at 7:00. I don't think it's weird at all. Once they sleep all the way through the night, you don't go wake them to change their diaper.

I used to do as PP suggested in changing DS first and then nursing him. But DS ended up pooping so frequently after I would nurse him that then I would end up changing him again. So now I change him after nursing. However it never takes my DS long to fall back to sleep even after a diaper change so I don't mind doing that. If we were struggling with that then I might change my process. I think a lot of people only change LO if they've pooped. As others have said it is no different than when they start sleeping through the night as we won't wake them then just to change the diaper (at least I won't!!)

This + some glorious nights dd sleeps long hours and like pp i don't wake her

Thanks for the input guys! I also usually just change her if she did number 2. DH changes her everytime she wakes up though and she usually stays up with him.

My pediatrician actually recommended not changing ds at night. We used to change dd after every feed and then rock her back to sleep. With not changing ds he is able to fall back asleep much more easily. It's glorious.

I change my son everytime. I just wouldn't feel right letting him sit in a wet diaper. I don't have an issue getting him back to sleep though.

I don't change him at night unless his diaper is really full. He never poops at night now so that's not an issue. Usually I hear him wake up before he starts crying and I think before he's fully awake so I put him on a boob until he passes out (usually just a few minutes). He always fully wakes up if I do change him, which means both of us would be up for at least an hour.

I only change DS if he poops, which is very rare during the night. At his last diaper change before bed I put some diaper cream on him to protect from the pee until morning. He is easier to get back to sleep if we just nurse

I'm super jealous that a lot of your babies are sleeping through the night! Mine is up every 3-4 hours still! I change her one throughout the night if I notice it's very full or a poop

Also if dd has a full wet diaper at night i just take it off and put another on without wiping since it's just pee, this doesn't alert her if she's drowsy she lets me do my thing and if she's asleep she doesn't usually wake up.

But her morning routine includes staying without a diaper until she starts fussing so her her lil bum can breathe

Good discussion- reassuring. We don't change over night normally (she sleeps through). However- she woke at 4am this morning fussing and wide awake. I did change her (she was so smiley and wanted to play). It was hard to resist... I was able to nurse her and put her back down. She didn't wake again until 7:30. Going back to work next week - so hopefully that doesn't become routine!

I always change her the one time we're up in the night, since she's a heavy wetter, and I know once she's fitting into her cloth diapers it will likely be more necessary to do the change. I have no issues getting her back to sleep after her feed though. She also sleeps with me and I can smell the pee diaper so it bothers me too, never mind her.

We always change DS and then I nurse him, so he falls asleep very quickly.. We tried not changing him if it was just a wet diaper, but this little poop monster poops around the clock.. Especially in the middle of the night!

I always change Bc my LO hates a wet diaper. Then I feed her so usually not too hard to get her back to sleep.

I'm in the same boat she surprised me once with an 8 hour sleep but I was awake for 5 of those hours so longest is about 4 hours wahhh!

After I started this discussion I decided to leave her nappy for the night and of course she changed that plan by doing the fullest dirtiest nappy haha so unpredictable babies are!
