New moms: Birth weight vs growth scan weight

Everyone talks about the inaccuracy of size estimations and Drs claim +\- lb. I'd like to see some of the comparisons!

What was your LOs birth weight?
What was the estimated weight during growth scan?
When was LO born compared to growth scan?

Re: New moms: Birth weight vs growth scan weight

  • I'd also like to ask why/when growth scans are performed? It seems some ppl constantly have USs and growth scans but the place I go to, provides 1 anatomy scan at 20weeks and that's it, unless ur over 40weeks or there's a concern. Am I missing something?

  • I had preeclampsia and had to deliver at 34 weeks, we had a scan done 2 days before my induction it said 4lbs and 12 oz and her birth weight was 4lbs and 4.8oz.

When you are measuring more than 2 weeks ahead or behind with the tape measure, or you are high risk such as pre eclampsia, high BP, GD etc.

I have never had an u/s done after my 20wk anatomy scan with any of my 3 pregnancies.

This I have had three growth scans based on measuring so far behind. She also was measuring small on the two previous scans 20-30
Percentile. She is all caught up now at 35 weeks so I won't have another one. Their guess now is 5 lbs 2 oz

Thanks!! I was starting to feel left out or like I was getting less care. I know someone whos had 6 US and she's 3 weeks behind me! She's always got awesome pics and bragging about seeing baby! She's larger though so I assumed that was why, but didn't know for sure! I'll be thankful I've only had one then!

My OB's does a growth scan for everyone regardless of how you are measuring (I am always measuring on track) at 36 weeks. I had mine last week and they are guessing if I go to my EDD baby will be just under/around 7 lbs. With DS they estimated if I went to my EDD he would be 7 1/2 - 8 lbs and then when I was in labor the Dr guessed 8 lbs 7 oz. He was 6 lbs 5 oz and I went in on my EDD. The U/S tech told me that they have a harder time predicting with accuracy when the baby's measurements are all different (e.g. if the head is measuring a week ahead, belly a week behind, legs 2 weeks ahead, etc.). I have more confidence this time than I did with DS.

My sister paid out-of-pocket to have extra USs simply to see her LO more often. I had only the one anatomy scan until there was a growth worry, then had one growth scan.

Our LO is measuring all over the place! Belly is ahead a couple weeks, legs behind, etc! I told them I didn't want to know if he had a large head, so they didn't tell me that one!

Lol my little one makes sure that the ultrasound tech can never get a good picture of her face. It's a total game for her. So after all our ultrasounds the first time we see her face will be on delivery day

  • With my twins I had a specialist doing my anatomy scans and my last US was a week before my csection and he was within a couple of ounces of their weight. Had the same doctor doing my scans this time and my little boy was measuring 2 weeks ahead last week and I'm expecting that he is pretty close this time too because although I haven't gained any weight this pregnancy my belly is HUGE.
  • With my first LO, the technician said I would have a 9 lb baby. He was 7 lbs 11 oz.
  • I've had an U/S at each of my appointments. My doctor does things really thoroughly, (he's a high risk/specialist, however I am not high risk I just love him!) My sister lives in MI and her U/S pictures aren't even close to mine.
  • The last time they gave me a weight estimate was a week and a half before I delivered. I got weekly ultrasounds so sometimes they would tell me her weight and sometimes not. At that ultrasound they estimated her weight to be 5 lbs 1 oz and when I had her she was 5 lbs 3 oz
  • DD1 she "measured" 7.5 lbs. She was 5 lbs 15 oz.

DD2 she "measured" 7.5 lbs. She was 7 lbs 2 oz.

  • My drs office is high risk and VBAC specialists. I have had 5 or 6 u/s and about to have another on Monday. It just depends. I always measure big and in high not concerning on amniotic fluid, and I'm a vBAC so they want everything to be right. I will know more Monday if I will be able to vBAC or if they want to do a repeat section.

Praying for vbac.. I had such a bad csection that I never want one again unless baby or myself are in trouble.
  • I'll be interested to see what LO weighs, my last anatomy scan baby was measure large (still in the 90 percentile) and body was in proportion to the head, they estimated its weight at 7 lbs 5 oz.. That was a couple weeks ago. They told me to expect a 10 lbs baby so we will see!
  • I delivered last Tuesday via emergency c-section due to preeclamsia at 33w5d. They estimated his weight to be 4lbs,3oz a few hours before the csection and he was born at 4lbs, 8oz.
  • @Saratiff, that is us exactly!! He refuses to show his face but is quick to flash his "bits". The US tech got frustrated while trying to measure his legs because he kept flashing himself and didn't want to sit still. No face pics. Maybe I'll frame a penis pic just for the heck of it!
  • With my first I had an ultrasound in the afternoon before they decided to induce. He was born 2 days later and while I don't remember the exact estimate, I do remember being impressed that it was within just a few ounces of what he actually weighed.

My sister had an ultrasound at 36w with an estimate of 6.5 at that time. She delivered at 38w3d and baby was 6.11.
  • At 36 weeks my u/s tech measured her at a little over 5 lbs and made a comment about her being "small" only to be followed by my doc coming in and saying "everything looks great...her weight is normal".... I was like wtf? But I've only had 3 u/s this whole pregnancy in accordance with typical protocol and none have resulted in great pictures. Anyway, due in a week!
  • The scan said my daughter would be 5 pounds and 9oz and she was 5 pounds and 7 oz. Pretty close
  • With my son at his last growth ultrasound he was 35 or 36 weeks. They told me if I made it to 40 weeks he would be about 6lbs. He was born at 38 weeks and he was 6lbs 15oz, so he probably would have been about 7.5lbs by 40 weeks.

This baby I had a growth scan at 35 weeks and they said she was measuring at about 6lbs 5oz so that she would probably be about 8lbs at 40 weeks.

  • I would also be aware that the smaller the baby the more accurate the measurements. So all these ladies that had growth scans at early thirty weeks and then had babies shortly after should technically be more accurate. The bigger the baby gets and the less room they have, the less accurate the weight guess is. My last pregnancy had a growth scan at 37 weeks for IUGR and estimated baby 4.5- 5lbs. I had her a week later and she was exactly 5lbs. I think that is why "bigger baby" measurements tend to be less accurate.
