Breast Milk Bizarre Thought...

my diet was restricted to be completely dairy free since my preemie cannot process the proteins in cows milk yet, so as I was creating a dairy free version of crepes for breakfast (almond milk and vegetable spread) it got me thinking a bizarre thought: I have pumped so much milk for my baby (have filled an above the fridge freezer, and a freezer at the hospital, plus im still going steady). I am sure that he will drink it over the course of his breast milk feeding time...BUT, if he doesn't, would cooking it into his meals be totally out of the question? Does breast milk act the same as any other mammals' in regard to its usability in cooking. The thought grosses me out...but people eat their own placentas so I guess it is not so far off??? I have a feeling that this oddball thought will cause some pretty strong reactions...but I'm just thinking out loud since there is such a push for "breast is best" with this generation - why waste it at that point right? Obviously I would not drink/eat it myself...but for baby?

Re: Breast Milk Bizarre Thought...

  • A lot of people cook with it. As a matter of fact, body builders are known to get breast milk from milk donors for their shakes and stuff because they are loaded with so much good stuff. Personally, it's too odd for me, but many people do it!

  • I saw a BM pancake recipe (for toddlers) on Pinterest...

  • You can absolutely use it. Grosses me out but that's just me!

  • For DS, we used it to make cereal and things like mac and cheese. Now if you and your husband started using it, I might find that a little weird but to each her own. :)
  • I know people save it for when toddlers get sick and such. My donor milk stash is coming from people that were saving up randomly for stuff like this and then discovered gluten or milk allergies and had to get rid of the milk.
  • I saw a photo of breast milk cheese...so nothing is too weird after that.
  • There was this guy on my strange addiction who said he loved his wife's breast milk and he used it in his cereal. A little icky but I guess they aren't hurting anyone... lol

If I'm right, this guy did a lot more. He actually breastfed from his wife at the table as their kids watched. As soon as her milk was drying up, he'd get her pregnant again so she'd get her milk back. She pumped tons and had special jugs of breastmilk just for him to drink. Now that's nasty. And their older kids were like 10 and 8. He actually did a tv interview about it.

  • My SIL made my nephew's morning oatmeal with breast milk until she used up her freezer stash once he was weaned. If you're going to make your own baby food I bet you can find good recipes for it.

I also had to cut dairy (DD was born at term but apparently I eat "too much" dairy for her to process and she needs to be weaned onto it). Everything has milk in it. It is hard. Trader Joe's has some solid ice cream products made from soy and coconut milks if you need a fix. I'm doing almond milk and fake butter still, even though I'm in the weaning back on process (I have stuff with traces of milk and one serving of cheese daily for now).

I'm not kidding I gagged a little reading this. I have a little bit of an aversion to my own breastmilk so I probably have a stronger reaction than most but...still. I don't know why I just don't like seeing my breastmilk other than after I pump. I don't want to smell it, or have it on me..when I leak getting out of the shower I get grossed out. I'm so weird.

  • Personally, I cannot understand why adult humans will lap up the breastmilk of other species, but think it's gross to consume human breastmilk. I don't drink any species' milk--because it's for babies--no, it just tastes gross to me. I will eat milk products sometimes, but I try not to think about, because it kind sleeves me out that I'm a thirty year old human eating an ingredient that nature produces solely for infant cows.

I am sure you are right. I actually only saw the upcoming episode trailer thing so I don't know the details. That's pretty gross. Lol
  • If you plan on making baby food, you can use your break milk (instead of water) as a thinning agent for the beginning phase when LO is still taking very thin purées.
  • @KonaCoffeeBean I completely agree with you...yet I have no idea where my hang up comes from but it is a huge one. I don't know why.

    Wait... WHAT?!?!

Grown man sucking on grown woman's boobs in front of 10 and 8 year old children??? To each their own regarding him drinking the milk from a jug or whatever. So long as it isn't taking away from Baby, no biggie (not for me, but no harm no foul). But to bf in front of the kids?! YUCK!

  • I have a friend whose baby is starting to eat solids. She mixed BM in with fruits to make it more smooth.
  • I don't think that's a weird thought at all.
Definitely cook it into meals. There are some cool other uses as well. Like putting it into their bath water and I saw this woman who makes awesome jewlery out of it.
As well, freeze some into ice cubes and put it into the mesh feeders makes for some great teething devices. :)

It's true! And surprisingly pretty too.

  • So to use this breastmilk for toddlers its going to be in the freezer for a long time (unless you are still pumping). I read guidelines that say 3-6 months in freezer and 6-12 in deep freeze. My freezer is really cold and not open much so I feel I could follow deep freeze guidelines. Thoughts? Do people go much longer than this. Otherwise I need to start rotating my stash, yet I want him to get the freshest milk being so young (9 weeks). I'd like to use the freezer stash to extend his time on breastmilk after I quit pumping in the spring.
