Blood-Sugar Levels.

For the ladies who have GD, what would your blood sugar be 2 hours after eating 1 double cheeseburger from Mcdonalds, a large fry, a coke, and a few bites of an oreo mcflurry? I'm curious because I've been checking my blood sugar to see what it's registering as, and I'm just curious what any of yours would be?

Regardless of what you ate, 2 hours after finishing the meal your sugar should be 120 or less. Your body should release the appropriate amount of insulin and respond accordingly. If it is not in that range, then that is a sign you have gestational diabetes. if you do have gestational diabetes, THEN you would worry about if I eat this what will my sugar be.
Personally, if I ate that for lunch,I would be in so much trouble. I can guarantee my sugar would be AT LEAST 200-225.The white starch carbs from the bread and potatoes would send it crazy up and then the regular sugar from coke and ice cream. I would be so so sick.

  • Everyone is different so there is no way to know what everyone's BG would be. Also if you have GD you probably shouldn't be eating that...

I totally agree. I'd be in the 200 if I even considered just eating that.
  • Yup, my sugar would be an obscene level after eating that. I'm not even sure my body would know what to do with a mc flurry, it's been so long since I've had ANYTHING even close to like that. But shit, if you can have all that McDonald's goodness then good for you!!!
  • My Dr. said I failed my 1 hour glucose test at 161, and wouldn't order the 3 hour test for me. She sent me to a dietician, and I explained to her that I don't have any of the risk factors for GD, I've had 3 pregnancies before with no diabetes, and I'm pretty sure that a lot of women have failed their 1 hour tests and passed their 3 hour. She said that I should try to eat for a few days as I normally would and then test 1 and 2 hours afterwards to see if I do/don't have GD. All of my #s have been fine. That's the reason I asked this question.

@Snoeebunniee what was your 1or 2 hour number after that meal? Also, did you do much physical activity before or after eating?
  • @BBaires, no exercise after or before eating, it was kind of a test. It was at 132 after 2 hours. I've eaten a few other meals and they are all at <140 after 1 hour and <120 after 2 hours. All of the meals except the mcdonalds.
  • There's no way to tell what someone's specific blood sugar number would be, but that type of meal would make anyone's numbers pretty darn high. Potatoes, bread, and ice cream are all things that make blood sugar spike.

Here's an example table of the glycemic index of foods. The higher the GI number, the more it negatively impacts your blood sugar.

Numbers of over 50 are considered high. You can see that a hamburger bun has a score of 61, a coke = 63, ice cream (without any added candy) = 57, and white potatoes (french fries) are in the 80-100+ range.

According to my friends who test at two hours, your levels should be under 120 at two hours.
I personally have to be under 130 at 1 hour.
  • Like @millereliz13, I have to be at less than 130 after 1 hour. I know plenty of women who have no risk factors for Diabetes and have had multiple previous pregnancies without it, but they somehow get it.

If you really don't think you have it, I would demand a second test rather than 'testing' by eating things that are definitely not good if you do in fact have GD.

  • @Snoeebunniee that's interesting. My guide is to stay under 120 by 2 hours (140 at the 1 hr mark). I haven't eaten anything like the meal you described so I can't tell you what my numbers would be.
Like a PP mentioned that kind of meal would likely make a healthy, non GD person's numbers spike. Especially the soda.
  • @tracij12 I agree, but unfortunately they will not give me the 3 hour test so I'm stuck here trying to figure it out myself.
  • I did the 1 hour test and blood sugar levels were normal but like 2 points away from being high.. So they told me to eat more protein and less simple sugars.. Everything has sugar in it, so I think just moderation and cut back on sweets.. Or if you eat something with high sugar then eat something with a lot of protein to balance it out.
  • I have GD, if I ate that, even WITH insulin, I am guessing it would be over 200. I can eat nuggets and a small fry, at different times, no coke, no mcflurry lol. My husband though, we tested him for fun after a crazy meal like that once and it was 95, jerk.

Did they give you a reason as to why they won't do the three hour test? Just don't find it necessary or what?

  • I guess they just don't think I need to take it.
