Infertility

Weird random question

When your husbands/boyfriends have to give their sperm do they do this at home or in the doctors office?

Almost every clinic is going to require them to do it in-house so that they can make sure it's controlled for non-contamination on the way to the lab. TBH, if you find a clinic willing to let him do that at home, I'd run :) It's taking a medical specimen. You want it to be in a controlled environment.

  • Interesting. My husband does it at home. I just need to bring it in within the hour. I'm seeing one of the best fertility specialists there are. My friend who went to another really good specialist was allowed to bring it in too.
  • My husband is allowed to do it at home and bring it in within the hour and keep it in his pocket or close to his body to keep it warm
  • @Malbright1015 yep!! Here too!! Except that I bring it in. lol
  • Same here, he can do it at home. There's even instructions on how to carry it in his pockets on under his arms. We had a good laugh thinking about him carrying out that one. Gotta make infertility less daunting sometimes ;)
  • I wonder if they feel a lot of pressure doing it since it is so times.

My hubby was able to take it in for the initial testing , we got instructions :D , but he had to go into the clinic for the sample they were going to actually use for fertilization
  • My DH did his at home and took it in. They gave us a page of instructions, the little bottle, a bag to put it in, and a paper bag to put all of it in. lol Like you, he just had to have it there within an hour and keep it warm.

  • Yeah I think that's pretty normal. I would think it would be very uncomfortable to do at the fertility place.
  • I agree. If I were a guy I would want to do it at home.

  • My DH does it there or home depending on his state of mind. I try to stay away while it's happening. I know I add to the nerves. I have terrible performance anxiety and I have nothing to perform really.
  • Same here @Drove2u I'm happy he can do it at home…less pressure and embarrassment.

My boyfriend did his at home for our IUI'S and at the office for IVF. We are seeing a top rated clinic/doctor and they are fine with it being done at home or their office.

I think that it depends where he feels most comfortable.

If he chooses to do it at home then they give us directions on how to transport it and we are good to go.

We have done it both ways and our clinic is perfectly fine with it either way.
  • I have to transport it tomorrow morning and it's like 100 degrees here. I hope it won't affect anything.
  • My husband also did it at home for testing... but has to do it at the office the day of retrieval.
