Switching to generic formula?

As I watch my BM supply continue to dwindle... I'm facing the reality that before long we will probably be exclusively FFing. Of all of my expectations, this one is the hardest to let go of. I had such dreams of breastfeeding. Anyways, it's no secret that formula is rediculously expensive, so I recently exchanged some gifted soy formula that I don't want to use (we have used similac sensitive since 1wk) for generic. I was able to get 6 huge tubs of Parent's Choice Sensitive, which is supposed to match similac. I've started LO on the PC, and over the past few days her poops have gotten harder.. it looks like we're on our way to constipation. I'm trying to decide if it's the formula itself causing the constipation or just the sudden change. I'm going to try mixing PC and similac and see if that helps to transition.

Anyone made the change to generic and experience constipation? What brand? And did it go away after LOs system adjusted or did you have to go back to name brand?? TIA!

Re: Switching to generic formula?

  • I switched to up and up and/or parents choice and saw no difference, she was constipated horridly on both. Doctor put her on miralax and she is doing well.

  • Started with enfamil
  • So you kept her on the generic and just added Miralax? I'm gonna call my ped soon. I just can't afford all of that brand name stuff! It's so stressful!
  • The way me and DH look at it is that every formula out there has to meet the same standards regardless of the name on the container. We are from Canada and switched from enfamil to the kirkland (Costco) brand, and we noticed that for about 2 week her poop changed consistency from what we were used to but it has regulated back out
  • We used enfamil gentlease for awhile and it was getting so expensive so we switched to either babiesrus gentle or parents choice gentle when babiesrus is sold out and he does just the same. When we first started exclusively formula feeding he seemed constipated for a little while and then he was fine. He still pooped every day he just would strain so hard when it was time and it would be pasty and now he has no problem. No difference at all when we switched to store brand.
  • Thank you! I am hopeful now that it's just transitional. I have compared the two brands and the ingredients are identical. I'll hold out for a couple of weeks and just keep my fingers crossed.
