Marginal Cord Insertion and Induction

Back when I was 20 weeks I had my anatomy scan completed and they determined that I had a marginal cord insertion. The doctor I saw at the time said that it was not a risk, but something we needed to keep an eye on (he seemed rather non-chalant about it and eased up even more when after a visit to the perinatologist revealed that it was NOT a velamentous insertion). Since then I've had multiple ultrasounds and grow scans to confirm that my baby is growing just fine. I have weekly biophysical profiles done and my kiddo has passed each of them with flying colors. Additionally, every time I have a growth scan completed she is always on the mark in terms of measurements and gestational age.

I had an appointment last week with the only doctor of the practice I hadn't met yet, and she stated because that there was a problem with the placenta and the umbilical cord that I would need to be induced at 40 weeks. She said that marginal cord insertion can cause IUGR in the third trimester and that's why they would want to induce on my EDD.

My thinking is that my LO has literally been on point in measurements and showing no growth issues or problems... so why would I need to be induced??? I have another growth scan Friday where I'm positive she is going to measure where she should.

My question for you ladies: has anyone experienced this before, and were you induced because of it? I would really rather not be induced if I can help it... I fear the cascade of intervention caused by induction and would rather the baby come when she is ready. How do you think I should approach extending the induction date? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Re: Marginal Cord Insertion and Induction

  • Hm I have no experience in this but could you talk to a different doctor within the office? Esp if it was ur first time seeing this doc.

  • I would speak with your actual doctor that has been following your pregnancy up until this point. He/she may have a better explanation. He'd finitely great questions though. Hoping you get some answers!

  • Unfortunately I think I'm scheduled with induction-doctor until delivery. I may try to give my original doctor a call to see if he can address some of my concerns. I just think it's weird the reason she wants to induce is because IUGR but so far, we haven't seen any evidence of it!
  • I have a marginal cord insertion as well and the doctors were very clear that they would only induce if it looked like the baby wasn't growing. I'm now at 39 weeks and since all measurements are good the doctors are not intending to induce unless I go way past due. I would definitely get another opinion before agreeing to an induction.
  • I agree, I would call and ask for a separate appt. with your original Dr to talk it over..
  • @abmommy15 that's what my first doctor made it seem like, so it just suckerpunched me when this doctor basically demanded it. I have an appointment tomorrow where I am going to ask for further reasoning.

I've seen 3 doctors this pregnancy and they have all been in agreement. In addition to that between the three of them they have only ever seen 1 baby born small as a result of marginal cord insertion. Hopefully your doctor can give you some insight :)
  • No experience but it sounds like you got some good advice. Im all for second opinions. God kiddo is doing well. Thoughts and prayers momma!

  • Glad to hear that your dr listened to your concerns and was able to bump it back.

I had a marginal cord insertion with my son and induction for that reason was never mentioned because he was measuring on track. I did end up getting induced at 38w but it was for pre-e not a scheduled cord insertion /size issue. I agree I would try to a li an induction at all costs due to the domino effect of the interventions that can lead to a c/s.
