Question for GD moms

Have your doctors said anything about just how long they will let you go before scheduling an induction? One doc told me she would like me to deliver in my 39th week but the doc I saw yesterday said since my sugar numbers are looking great and I am currently not having any other issues, she would let me go to 41 weeks before inducing. Not that I want to be induced, I am just wondering what the norm is.

Re: Question for GD moms

  • I have GD and they have done biophysical profiles (ultrasounds checking the placenta function, growth of baby and fluid levels) at weeks 34 and 37. I also had one non stress test done (I think) at week 36. My dr explained that as long as all those things looked good and I'm managing my levels with my diet, things are going as normal. With that being said, this will be my third c-section so I'm scheduled for surgery at 39+2, on Thurs. But as far as what we discussed, as long as all the tests are being done and coming back as normal, there is no reason to induce early. GD babies tend to be little fatties and also there is something about the placenta breaking down a little earlier than normal so I would ask about the tests and find out how they will monitor that stuff and go from there. Good luck to you!!

  • I'm going to be induced at 40 weeks if she doesn't come on her own before then. I get a biophysical profile and a nst every week. So far everything looks good, but my doctor doesn't want me to go longer than that because of the placenta.
  • I'm going to be induced at 39 weeks if he doesn't come sooner. I'm now 37 + 3. My numbers aren't great and I'm on medication which they've increased once already. I have another hospital appointment tomorrow so I'm hoping to get a date then (so exciting!) GD babies -apparently- extra weight go to their shoulders and upper bodies making them broader and a little more difficult to deliver, so over here they don't let you go past 40 weeks.

    Good luck to you!
  • Thanks ladies. I am going for twice weekly nst's and have an u/s on Tuesday. Currently 38 weeks and was told they would do another u/s at 40 if I make it that long to recheck fluid levels. So I am happy with all the monitoring they are doing. I know GD babes can be bigger but I didn't know about placenta breaking down sooner. I will have to do some research on that. Doc mentioned I could opt for an elective induction if I am 3-4cm when I decide to have my first check done but I was against that. Guess more research is needed so I can make the best decision. Thanks again!
  • I was told that because i am insulin dependent that there is a higher chance of stillborn in late pregnancy which is why they are inducing me tomorrow at 38w1d. All of my tests have been perfectly normal.

  • I'm getting induced tomorrow at 39 weeks....but a I'm on insulin and glyburide. Numbers are still ok but not great and my previous baby was LARGE with broad shoulders and had issues at delivery. I'm comfortable with induction this time around and can't wait!
  • I'm insulin dependent GD and a VBAC. My OB and I just had this conversation as inducing a VBAC is more complicated. My bloodwork is all great and coming back as non diabetic and my daily sugar levels are being pretty well controlled. LO isn't overly large and the fluid levels were normal so we agreed on no induction until the late 40 week range but absolutely not past 41 weeks if all factors stay the same. I do weekly NST too.

  • I delivered my daughter med free on Thursday because I got preeclampsia on top of GD, I was managing diabetes without meds and was planning a birth center delivery until I risked out for preeclampsia. My midwife would have let me go all the way to 42 weeks before utilizing induction. I only had citotec to thin my cervix and that was enough to kick labor into high gear. It was insane, I delivered her less than 3 hours thirty minutes after the citotec was placed. Good luck mamas your almost there!

  • I have GD but it's been well managed my entire pregnancy. I'm on glyburide but only a 1.25mg dose. Had a growth scan last Tuesday and they said baby is currently 7lbs. They also told me my fluids were on the low side of normal. With that being said, the OB wants to induce at 39 weeks if she doesn't come on her own before then.

I'm 37 and 4 today. I think she may be here this week. I've had lots of pressure and lower back pain the past few days.

    Good luck, momma!
  • I have diet controlled GD and my doc said 39
Weeks and we'd induce. Im on no meds and do glucose checks 4 times a day. My doc said she won't let me go over 39 weeks but I'm secretly hoping he makes his own moves and debut so I don't have to be induced. But I'll do anything to make sure everything is ok. But as you've heard every single doctor is different and has a different philosophy. Good luck lady!

I'm being induced exactly at 39 weeks. I'm on glyburide 2.5 mg bedtime only. My numbers are really good. It was really my fasting that was a little off. I have weekly BPP and NST's. Even though everything looks good, induction is still in plan due to shoulder distochia. I know measurements are not necessarily accurate, but better safe then sorry I guess?
  • I am insulin dependent and still struggle to control my bs. I walk 45 minutes every day and am still on my feet a lot for my retail job. At 36 weeks. On friday they said everything was on track and i can go up to my due date but probably no later due to my insulin levels.
my dr had gd with all three of her kids and has been amazingly empathetic about my wish to do as natural as possible. But after 40 the placenta can break down so quickly she doesnt want to risk it.
  • I am being induced at 39 weeks next week. I just manage my GD with diet and exercise but on top of that I have been having high pressure. :/ I would really just like her to come on her own but if it is the best thing for my baby and me then I will do it.
  • i have GD and am using 7.5 mg glyburide plus diet to control it, numbers have been good but doc said mon that they wante to deliver BY my due date, so will prob induce that 39th week if i haven't gone on my own. he said he would try the disc on the crrvix route or if i were 3-4 cm already, he would break my water, we'll see! i'm hoping he starts on his own though!
