Hips killing me

New to the app..... I've goggled and tried lots of different things to help my hips when I sleep. I wake up with deep soreness.

I've had ideas shared ranging from sleeping on back, pillow between my knees, pillow under back etc.

I was just wondering if anyone had any success with anything else.

Re: Hips killing me

  • Hot bath before bed? Later in my last pregnancy I ended up sleeping partially upright on the couch. It also depends on what the problem is. I have an unstable pelvis, so I wear a support belt that keeps everything from shifting too much and spraining.

  • I have been having lower back and hip pain already this pregnancy. With DD I had it so bad I had pubic symphysis shifting that was excruciating. I have been sleeping with a Snoogle and it has helped. I'm not to the point of wearing a hip brace like I did last pregnancy but I'm sure that is in my near future.
  • I hadn't thought of a bath. Might give that a try tonight and see how it goes :) thanks

I haven't dealt with this specifically in pregnancy, but pre-prego I would have hip pain. I found it would help SO much when I stretched my hips out. I started doing a yoga routine and noticed that I carry much of my tension in my hips (this is apparently common for women). You can look up hip opener stretches or yoga. There are a few poses that aren't recommended during pregnancy because you twist your torso (which could cut off blood supply to your abdomen, from what I understand), but there are many that should be pregnancy friendly. Hope that (or something) helps!

Edit disclaimer: obviously I don't know your level of fitness or anything about your physical health so be careful! It may be worth getting clearance from your doctor to meet with a yoga instructor or personal trainer to look into this option under the care of a progressional.

Yes! Me! Last pregnancy my hips and legs would ache so badly it would wake me up nightly. I went to a chiropractor and cleared it up super fast. I was also taking Epsom salt baths regularly. This time hasn't been nearly as bad, though I still have it some and I'm pregnant with a singleton this time, not twins.

Also make sure you have a pillow not just between your legs but also between your feet when you sleep.
  • Thanks so much for all the suggestions :) really appreciate it. Might try to get into a chiropractor. Sounds like something worth trying
  • I put my rice bag in the freeze then use that I've had this problem for weeks now and that is the only thing that seems to help
  • And also, NEVER put a pillow in the small of your back while you're laying on your back. That causes unnatural extensions which can make you really cramp up and injur yourself. If anything while on your back, put a pillow under your knees to elevate them. It will take the pressure off your lower back.

  • I went to a chiropractor today for low back pain and hips. The lady I went to specializes in pregnancy; however, I don't think there are many of those. It didn't take long and seemed to alleviate some pain. Hope it helps!
  • I've been getting hip pains the last couple of days. It only starts up when in bed trying to sleep. I haven't found anything that helps :(

@sbeara25 - I have crazy hip pain, too. It feels like my left leg came put of the socket. It's especially painful when I sit up from lying down, roll over my tailbone, or put all my weight on that leg (like walking). Is this similar to your issue?
  • I've had issues with my hips being out of alignment for years and have been going to the chiropractor for 2 years now. My doctor gave me the approval to continue with my chiropractor appointments but had to make them aware I was pregnant. You can get adjusted but not use the electronic stimulation or the roller massage beds. I've gone once since I've been pregnant and it has helped so much. I have another appointment next week (I go once a month). Also sleeping with a pillow between my legs has helped a lot.
  • Also as an addition to my post, make sure you research the chiropractor well if you haven't gone before. My chiropractor dud an initial evaluation and xray before he started any treatment/alignment. My insurance does cover chiropractor visits, so make sure you check into that too because it can get expensive without coverage.
  • @nanamp Normally mine fades a bit after lunch. Mostly morning whenever I go to sit down or get up. Walking used to be an issue but it's gotten better(ish). I tried the warm bath suggestion and so far it has really helped. Another one I've done is asked my boyfriend to pull my toes. They snap crackle pop like nobody's business and it has been a huge relief on the rest of my body surprisingly.
  • I have a really tight IT band and sometimes this causes my hips to be sore and irritate me especially when I'm trying to sleep. For me using a foam roller over that area (from the hip down towards the knee) really helps, as does massage. As pp have said another thing that could be causing the pain and discomfort is if your hip is out of alignment and the chiropractor can definitely help with that. I hope you find some relief!

I guess it's time to buy a body pillow
  • I got my Snoogle today!!!! So excited to try it. I've also been using my foam roller to roll out my legs to keep them loose (never use the roller for your back- super dangerous).
  • So I have a lot of pain on my left lower back/hip just over the past few days.. Not when I'm sleeping or anything just when I'm on my feet for longer than a few minutes?! I was cooking dinner last night and wanted to lay in bed & cry .. It just seems to be getting worse :((
  • The suggestion that worked best for me was the bath with salts one. But I suspect it's a different kind of pain so I'm not to sure.
