Telling work your pregnant

I work part time from home and have an almost 2 year old. I'm not sure I'll be able to work from home when I have a second child but I want to try hence I don't want to quit my job. I feel like it's a weird situation for work and telling them and I would love some advice! And when should I tell them? Not too soon obviously but not to close to when it wouldn't give them enough time to prepare.

Re: Telling work your pregnant

  • How much notice would they need to prepare? It totally depends on your line of work for when you tell them. If you were to quit and give notice, how much time would you give them? 6 weeks? 8 weeks? I don't think you need to give them more notice than that.

I'm a musician and plan on playing in an opera orchestra 2 weeks before my due date. I plan on having a back-up available a couple months ahead of time.

I think 6-8 weeks is plenty of time. That is kind of weird situation since you only work from home. I will have to train a backup and hire a temp for when I am out so I plan on telling my work when we tell everyone else at 12 weeks. I want to have everyone lined up way ahead of time because I went on bed rest unexpectedly at 36 weeks last time when I planned on working until I went into labor. (Different job now).

  • I'm personally waiting until I'm showing.. Lol I only work weekends (SAHM the other 5 days) at a diner as a hostess. I'm sure my huge belly will get in the way in a busy diner but oh well. I know how you feel. I'd personally just wait until you're farther along. I agree, 6-8 weeks is perfect
  • I had to tell my work already because I work at an animal hospital and there are things I need to avoid such as X-rays, anesthesia, certain meds and heavy lifting. My manager was through the moon excited for me.....she even cried. I haven't had a chance to tell the big boss yet but planning on to either tomorrow or Saturday.

  • I already had to tell (there's a really shady situation going on here- they're trying to force me into a different position without giving me a comp plan- there's a lot more to it but I just wanted to get it out there). It sucked to tell this early and I pray that I didn't jinx myself.

Last time I told after 10 weeks (and two excellent appointments).
  • I'm starting my new job Monday so I had to tell HR already because I need to leave early during training for an U/S. That was super awkward. I was like 'thanks for the job offer BTW I'm 4 weeks pregnant.'

  • I just started training for a new position and was told there's a good chance I'll be flying out 2 times, for a week time, in August and again in September. Right now I feel fine so I want to believe I'll be ok to travel but I keep wondering if I should go ahead and tell my boss... I'm currently 5w5d

  • I've already had to tell my boss and I'm 8 weeks today. My job requires heavy lifting and at my doctor appointment the other day, I found out there could be a possibly of having a high risk pregnancy. So I wanted to give plenty of time for them to be able to prepare in case I do have to stop working sooner than planned.
  • I am a physician in an ICU, and had told only one nurse who I am close with earlier this week (I am 6 and 5 today). I told my partners yesterday on her advice because she was worried I would need them to cover me if I had a patient who needed to go to the cath lab (potential radiation exposure) or a patient who had CMV. Both my partners were thrilled for me, which surprised me a little (I don't know why).
  • I told my boss already, since we do our audit schedule on an annual basis and we were doing my annual review at the time. So I gave him the heads up on all the afternoons off I'll be taking for prenatal appts and let him know one of those audits realistically won't be getting done by the end of the fiscal year. He was really cool about it and sent me a bunch of stuff about leave & how much time off I get to take. Your situation is definitely different, I guess it depends on how much notice they need and how they'll handle it. Good luck =)
  • I think you have plenty of time to wait and tell your company. As a part timer are you entitled to maternity leave? If not they may not hold your position for  you. I think it might be good to tell them more than 6 weeks (I'm thinking closer to 8 weeks) in advance. That way you have time to save/plan if you need to find something for yourself after baby arrives.

For me I told my boss right away. We are a pretty close knit group and I wanted her to know. I will probably wait to tell the rest of my coworkers until we make it into the 2nd trimester.

  • I've already told my boss and a couple of close coworker friends. I teach preschool and we were talking plans for the upcoming school year so it seemed like a good time.
  • I was planning to keep it from my employers for a while but with this level of morning sickness it may be a bit difficult to hide!!

I'll probably tell at 11-12 weeks (in a couple weeks).
  • I plan on telling about 12 weeks when we tell everyone else.  This is my 3rd and I showed early with my second, so I'm thinking I'll show early as well.  Is anyone planning on not returning from leave?  How will you handle this?
  • I plan on telling them mid October (15-16wks) when I can't really hide it anymore.  I told my bosses really early last time and they were really good about giving my time off for the MMC, but I still want to keep this one close to us for a while.

  • I'm planning on waiting until 12 weeks before telling anyone at work. But with the MS and the rumor mill at work, I probably won't make it that far.
  • I work in childcare... I wasn't going to say anything to my boss until tomorrow (maybe) but this parent brought her child in and said she has fifths disease. Needless to say I was not happy at all because 1. I had to tell my boss today, 2. Because that parent didn't keep her child home, I had to go home and from work and miss out on 7 hours of pay.

My prenatal appointment was supposed to be tomorrow morning but I was able to get it changed to today.
  • @bheatz22 -- how did that go? I am in the same boat. Got pregnant a few days after accepting new position. I've been there for a week now and am 6w4d. So worried about telling them!

  • I was hired for an new online teaching position in June. I got my BFP last Monday. I've never met anyone in person and I don't start until next Monday. I'm not exactly sure when I'll tell them but it's going to be awkward. I'm hoping to wait a while so they can see how awesome I am but at the same time don't want to wait too long.

At my previous school, I told my principal at 12 weeks both times.
