Maternity Clothing

Yes, I am fully aware there are several threads on this, but personally I didn't find them useful. I'm sure that if I didn't find them useful, there are others who may not have found them useful. So in an attempt to kind of organize and categorize the information given out,  I decided to post this.

Plus size maternity is a little tricky. Many stores say they carry larger sizes, but let's be honest, going up to an XL isn't cutting it. So here is a list of some stores that you may have better luck finding clothes in.

Target is a good place, they tend to go into the 4X's and the 20's.
Kohl's can be another good place.
OLD NAVY is awesome for this as well, but word to the wise, online may be your best bet to see what they actually have in it's entirety. Also things sell out there fast so you have to be on top of it.
Walmart, guys it's walmart...they have just about every size ever created.
JC Penney is hit or miss, but they'd most likely carry plus sizes in maternity

Plus size clothing stores can be your friend during your pregnancy too. Picking up items 1 or 2 sizes up has been helpful for me. Here are some shops that I like, but you can definitely find them online, as we don't all live in the same area:

Torrid: they go from 12-28. In their sizes 0-4, I'd say 0 is about a 12/14, then 1 would be a 16/18 and so on.
Fashion to figure: They go from sizes 12-26 and they are good for cute jackets and dresses for going out. Gotta keep date night alive ladies!
Rainbows: They have a plus size section that you can work with. $10.00 maxi dresses are a win for everyone.
** Most of these stores also carry larger shoe sizes. So if your feet are swollen or you just need a larger shoe, these places may be your new best friends**

Now, for non-plus size stores:
OLD NAVY
Kohl's
Target
Destination Maternity
Macy's, A pea in the pod ( They have REALLY good sales, coupons and you get discounts on your card too...so I suggest looking into it if you want to save money)
Motherhood
JC Penny
Sears
H&M
ASOS
Forever 21 (I believe they have maternity now, I could be wrong)

Please feel free to list any other stores, but I request that you specify if they have plus size or not . Pretty please!

Oh and before I forget: BELLY BANDS! Belly bands are our friends ladies! You can put them on over your pants, skirts, shorts and what not that are too small to clothes. Just make sure your shirt covers it and go on with life being cute, pregnant and comfortable.

Re: Maternity Clothing

  • @groovylocks started a great post about sizes as well. :)

Forever 21 does not carry maternity clothes. They do have tons of camis for like a buck and I live in those bad boys!

Thank you, I stand corrected. Maybe they just help you find items that work for when you are pregnant? I've searched maternity on there and found stuff...but who knows. Thank you again.

Awww I'm sorry! Mine has been very helpful. Before I thought of just going a size up or 2 at my regular stores, belly bands were my saving grace. Being plus sized is rough.

I fell into the two "free" belly button band deal where you pay $15 shipping. Erroneously bought a size too large so that was that with them. Not to mentions those were terrible material and flipped up at the bottom. Then I read on here about the Bella bands from Target and bought 2 of them...tried them on in-store to ensure fit and I continue to wear for the limited number of work pants and shorts that still look look halfway decent. I am folding them in half when I wear them, so not sure how comfortable they will be when I'm bigger and can't fold anymore.

I have one but haven't tried it yet, it just looks uncomfortable! It was given to me as a gift when I first found out I was pregnant and I just keep looking at it laying on my floor.
  • I get the vast majority of my mat clothes at old navy online! The actual old navy in my town sucks for maternity. Also, you can return for free if things don't fit!
  • I get a lot of my maternity from Gilt under the baby and maternity section. They have incredible sales. I've gotten Rosie Pope there and Isabel and a couple of other brands. I just get the same size as I am normally. I don't believe they carry plus size maternity though.
  • I had good luck at Kohls...I normally wear size 18/20 and their XL fit me. I also found a lot of cute things at Ross, but I had to try more than one location as their stores are hit and miss!
  • Almost all my maternity clothes are from the Gap. I love the Gap Fit line, but also am able to find work clothes there that don't look too drab. I order online mostly. The closest Gap with maternity section is about 45 minutes away, and it is nice to try in the clothes first, but sometimes I don't have time to get to the store. Plus they are always having sales online...sign up for the annoying emails. You will save tons of $$. Also if ordering online, be sure to read the reviews of a product first, sizing varies depending on the style. Also, add your review once you get it in the mail. It really helps!
  • First pregnancy I got some stuff off old navy, of which the bottoms and tanks still look good. Since then, I have bought two things new over the past two pregnancies. Everything else I get at Goodwill or the other thrift store or the children's resale place. Most of the stuff that you find second hand is basically brand new and some of my stuff still had the tags on it
