How exactly does one go about getting a breast pump through insurance? I don't even know where to start with the process. #clueless
I called the number on the back of my card and asked. They looked it up and found out I was 100% covered and told me the company they contract through for medical supply stuff. They actually were able to connect me to the company right then instead of me hanging up and redialing. The company asked me to have the dr fax a prescription over stating it was for a double election breast pump along with a few other things and they sent the pump right to my door-it's sitting in dd2's closet right now just waiting to be sanitized when I get ready to start pumping.
Bottom line call your insurance company and ask. Mine was very helpful!
@J1D I went through the Aeroflow website and they're doing everything for me. I've heard good things about them. My insurance won't let them ship it out until a month before my due date, so they're going to call me back then. I know some people on this board were already able to get a pump with their insurance though so it just depends.
My insurance didn't give me a pump until 6 weeks postpartum. I just let them know I was going back to work (if not, they only give you a manual pump), and they set up an appointment with a nurse the same day as my 6 week postpartum checkup to get the pump and go through the features.
@J1D I just searched breast pumps on my insurance website. They listed 9 companies I could choose from and I just looked up the different options from there. Any of the companies they worked with dealt with my insurance company and my doctors office and I had my pump about 2 weeks after placing the order.
I have to have a script and pre authorization for my insurance. I just submitted with aeroflow I'm hoping they will work out the details and I'll get one.
If your insurance will reimburse you make sure to check where you can purchase it from. I'm required to purchase it from a medical supplies store. They will not reimburse if it's bought from a retailer such as BRU or Target
Glad I ordered the Medlea- I'm offered the same through my insurance (except not the Nature's one).
I only heard of Medela, not Ameda, so I just went with it...didn't want to research too much since I only had two options I'm already overwhelmed with baby product options, so I'm kind of happy there was only A or B.
I'm going with Medela but will have to purchase it on my own.
My insurance company is a joke. They only give you a bottom of the line breast pump for free. I read the reviews on the brand (forget what it was called now) and pretty much they were all terrible.
I asked if I got a prescription for the Medela if my insurance company would cover it and they said no and that if I want Medela I have to pay out of my own pocket.
Glad I pay $200/month for a crappy insurance! Not to mention they only reimburse me $40 for my birthing class. My fiancé's insurance would reimburse us $100 if I was on his insurance! His premium is the same as mine!
Funnily enough on the Medela website it lists my insurance as one that they work with and lists places you can get their breast pump from in the area.
Re: Best breast pump brand
I had the Ameda Purely Yours last time, but I wasn't thrilled with it.

I'm getting the Medela PIS. The pump itself is covered... but there's a $120 up charge for the tote and some accessories.
