Breathlessness leads to cough?

hey all, I'm 16wks and some change and I'm starting to experience breathlessness which leads to coughing. I don't remember having any feeling of shortness of breath with my first until the last few months. And no barkie coughing fits! Is any one else expecting this?

Re: Breathlessness leads to cough?

  • This is a good post for the daily symptoms thread cause I know others have posted about breathlessness there too. It's a totally normally symptom even as early as the first trimester. If you feel short of breath just take it easy.

  • Kind of, but not really. I have really hoarse coughing fits when I laugh too hard, which in turn leads to breathlessness. Mine is triggered by the laughing, so it doesn't sound the same as yours. And for me, the coughing almost always leads to gagging or throwing up. Oh, and I'm 16+4 as of 7 minutes ago.

  • You're also producing more mucus than you used to, which can trigger some airway irritation. I wouldn't stress it unless it starts escalating into some kind of respiratory infection.
  • I'd be careful, although breathlessness is a fairly common symptom there are many other things that cause it too. I found out that my heart is misbehaving, my symptoms were a sudden need to cough with some breathlessness. I'm not at all saying that yours sounds like that because I knew that the cough was heart related almost straight away (it would happen when I suddenly had three heart beats instead of two, ie instead of the normal bud dum it was a bud du dum) but I'm just saying if it continues or you're worried then it's worth getting checked out.

Just keep an eye out and see if anything triggers it or if it is just one of those things that comes and goes while pregnant!
