Baby shower foods!

Our baby shower is this weekend coming up and I told my aunt, mother and MIL I would make the food/get the food for the shower since they are all coming from out of town. However I am not a great party planner so I have no idea what is normal foods for a shower (FTM and I've only ever been to one baby shower) or what I should make! I just didn't want to be lame and only make sandwiches! Thanks in advance!

Re: Baby shower foods!

  • The last shower I went to was for my DH's cousin, hosted by my MIL. There was jambalaya, sandwiches, chips and seven layer dip, tea, lemonade, and water.
Shower before that, I only remember the pinwheels because my mom brought me a plate full of them, but I didn't eat them because of the lunch meat in them. I remember eating grapes, too, so there was a fruit tray.
I've asked my mom to stay away from making sandwiches for my shower because it's a huge tease for me. I think for my shower we're going to do pulled pork or smoked brisket for our main food. Some fruits/veggies/cheese cubes. We'll probably do sherbet punch. And I think I'll make this bomb-ass bacon cheese dip that I'm in love with, served with pita chips. If you want me to PM you the link for the cheese dip, I can. :) It was a huuuuge hit at my mom's Thanksgiving last year.

  • What time of day? I would think a variety of finger foods and desserts would be good. Veggies with dip or hummus, fruit, deviled eggs, mini sandwiches, stuffed mushrooms, quiche, seven-layer dip with chips. Chocolate truffles are pretty easy to make and are somewhat different for dessert. Lots of ideas on Pinterest, I'm sure :)

Since it's summertime, you can be creative with fruits and vegetables. I LOVE skewers! You can play with any kind of skewer. I am a fan of good old fashioned hot dogs and hamburgers as well. With hamburgers you can get fancy and add different cheeses and sauces to put on them. Possibilities are endless. Pinterest is a good place for unique recipes! That's where I look to find different shower ideas. Good luck and enjoy your shower! I recently downloaded the yummly app for iPhone.
  • I would go with a fresh fruit and fresh veggie tray for sure. Beyond that, sandwiches don't have to be boring! We did shredded turkey sandwiches with hot and juicy turkey in the crockpot. That way you can set it and not worry about it while you prep other food. You could do the same with any other meat, too! Then you just need buns, cheeses, and maybe a couple sides. All of the baby showers I've been to are less formal and more like fun family/friend gatherings. I hope you have fun!!

  • It can go so many different ways. It kind of depends on what time you shower is and if you plan on just doing finger foods or sit down meal type foods. My shower is just from 1-3 and we are having caramel apples, fruit and veggies, strawberry pretzel salad, donuts (those are a major joke because on more than one occasion I have driven over an hour one way to buy donuts from my favorite childhood bakery...lol), and Italian beefs.

My family tends to graze and eat while walking around and chatting. I have been to a couple of other showers this year and one was a brunch theme with the full buffet style meal and another one that was just a build your own sundae bar and cupcakes.

Check Pinterest for some good ideas... That is always my go to place!
  • I had comfort food - wings, mini grilled cheese sandwiches, things like that. All finger sized and sides that went with it - potato salad, corn on the cob but no green salad. I'm extremely laid back and so was my shower. It was more like a backyard get-together than a traditional party.
  • Thank you guys so much! This has really helped me, I wasn't sure where to begin! We are going to be doing it after my white coat ceremony in the afternoon and everyone that is coming will be staying with us so I wasn't trying to make it too formal but enough for 10 people to eat all evening! Thanks again! I better get to planning a menu!
  • I usually do a brunch. I do a variety of quiche, chicken salad sandwiches, a green salad, fruit tray, cheese tray and pita chips with hummus, chips and salsa.
  • At mine it's more of a sit down dinner, so there's a salad, chicken with sides, bread, dessert with coffee, and sweets/ snack table. But that's what is offered at the place my mother in law is having the shower. I love some of the ideas above. I say anything goes, especially with a group the size of ten people, you could do any type of food theme.
  • My mom is planning mine as a brunch and getting an assortment of bagels and cream cheese, muffins, fruits cheese and veggie platter and quiche (I LOvE quiche)

Now I just want a quiche and panera bagel really bad!!
  • I'm doing a smores bar, a lemonade bar, fruit kabobs, and mini BLT sandwiches! Those were the requests I made to my mom who is on a planning rampage haha! I'm sure we will have other odds and ends, but how often can I have a smores bar?!
  • I just had mine we had cheese and crackers, fruit, sandwiches, Cuban food (chicken, rice and beans). Along with cookies, mini bundt cakes and donuts for dessert.
  • You had me a smores bar :x :x

  • Everyone's favorite are egg sandwiches around here. Can't go wrong with them. We also do fruit and veggie trays, deviled eggs, salads, star bars and skor bars.

    Star bars are amazing !!
Here's a recipe, you must try them !!

    2 cups graham cracker crumbs.
    2 cups shredded coconut, unsweetened.
1 - 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk.
    1/4 c. melted margarine
    4 aero chocolate bars.

    Preheat oven to 350F.

Mix together the first four ingredients. Press into a greased 9x13 inch pan, and bake for 10 minutes.

Remove the crust from the oven and set aside. Melt the chocolate and pour over the crust. Let cool and cut into squares.
  • Every time I volunteer to make something for a party, my pickle sushi (preggo sushi) is always requested. Sounds nasty but tastes absolutely AWESOME.
    Cooked Ham (the rectangular shaped)
    Claussen Whole Pickles
    Package of Regular Cream Cheese

Let cream cheese thaw to room temp
Dry off then lay out a piece of ham
Spread out cream cheese, so you can't see the ham
Dry off a pickle and lay it at the top of the ham and cream cheese, roll down so the pickle is wrapped in ham and cream cheese
    Then cut into pieces

I tried to attach a picture but can't figure it out
  • I went to a shower today with great food:

    Homemade chicken salad sandwiches
    Nice pasturized cheeses and crackers
    Salad
    Olives & nuts
    Fruit
    Dessert -of course!
    Lemonade & iced tea

Another suggestion: pasta salad with the protein of your choice
  • At mine we're serving all of my pregnancy cravings. Thankfully they are pretty normal! Little salad cups of romaine lettuce with ranch (I've specifically been craving the white crunchy part of romaine lettuce), grilled cheese sandwich triangles (and a few other paninis), berry fruit salad, popcorn, and Nutella dip. I think the hosts may have a few other options too. The shower is from 2-4 on a Sunday, so it's not really a meal time.
  • Mine is 10am and I am helping my mom to make fruit salad, egg and cheese casserole, and a few different kinds of pastries and bagels. I love brunch foods- I think you could get away with brunch for an afternoon shower as well. We even had a brunch reception for our wedding!

  • You can do anytime of kabob -- those are really easy and fun. Quiche is really good and easy to make as well! You also can't go wrong with fruit and vegetable trays. A sandwich bar is another good idea.

My shower hosts just told me that they're doing a taco and burrito bar at my shower. Mexican food has been my number one craving!

  • I totally thought of another hot shower item !!
My mother makes chip dip and it's amazing and is always the first thing gone at any event !!

    1 block of cream cheese.
1 small container of sour cream.
    1 bottle of salsa.
    1 block of cheddar cheese.
    1 green pepper.

With electric mixer, mix cream cheese and sour cream together until smooth consistency, spread out on bottom of pan.
Pour bottle of salsa over the cream cheese/sour cream mix.
Grate cheddar cheese and put over top.
Cut green pepper and add to top.

Then we use the tostitos scoops chips.
It is amazing !! I tried making it with low fat sour cream, it gets too watery so I recommend the regular stuff.
  • We just had my shower yesterday and it started at 2:30. We mainly just had finger foods including a fruit and veggie tray, meatballs, a cheese ball, pork tenderloin sandwiches, spinach dip, and shrimp cocktail. It was a lot of different things, but everything was delicious!!

I'm not having a shower, but at showers I've attended, I've seen mostly smallish snacks/finger foods, veggie and cheese platters, tea sandwiches etc. I personally die for those tiny finger sandwiches, I end up eating like 40 of them. I believe that is is justified, because like 40 finger sandwiches = one big sandwich, amirite?

    Edited for spelling.

I love this idea! But if we did that for my shower it would be all types of potatoes and chocolate milk so there wouldn't be much variety. :D

    ETA:
    Now I'm craving popcorn. :P
  • We're doing a Sunday morning brunch with bagels and a yogurt bar. Big tubs of vanilla yogurt and different fruits and granolas as toppings. Also coffee and apple cider as it will be in September. Just pick things you love and enjoy your shower!
  • My mom is having veggie trays, fruit trays, buffalo chicken dip, rotel dip, and little ham or turkey sandwiches. She's keeping it pretty simple. I don't like cake so she also ordered a tray of sugar cookies. I'm super excited about them!
  • I had one of mine last week. My family made it a weekday dinner-time shower since we were in town visiting my family (I live 3000 miles away from all of them) for only 3 weeks and my mom wanted to squeeze it in at a time when everyone was available.
She made an all-out lasagna dinner with green salad and appetizer sandwiches. Plus the cake & cupcakes.
At first I thought a weekday evening sounded odd, but everyone invited showed up and they all seemed to love getting served a nice full dinner on a normally hectic weekday night.
  • I regret posting this for two reasons. It's 11pm where I am and I was a full course meal with 50 million deserts! And also because how am I ever going to decide what to make! You guys make everything sound yummy!!!
