Tsh levels/thyroid

hi everyone,

Has anyone who has tested high for tsh been taken off of their meds in the second trimester?

I am 13 weeks today, 2 previous losses this year. We were seeing a reproductive endocrinologist when I got pregnant this time and had zero thyroid issues before pregnancy however within 4 days my tsh levels jumped to almost 10- re said she wanted them in the 2.5 range so she put me on 0.05 mg of synthroid.

Ob took me on early because of previous loss so I saw him at 11 weeks. He felt 0.05 was such a small dose that he wanted to take me off of it. He sent me for tsh and it has dropped to 1.27. He also sent me for a test he called free t3 and t4 I believe. The trouble is I don't know the result of the other tests and he is now on vacation (I got a voicemail saying to discontinue the synthroid when I run out of it, today). He said I will test again August 13 when I have my next appointment. He doesn't return till August 12.

My question for those of you with more experience in this: is that a long time to wait and verify the tsh levels?
If my thyroid was out of whack in the first trimester is it possible it's regulated now?

The re has discharged me as a patient to the Ob so they won't give me the test, my family doctor is also on vacation till August 3. If I want a blood test the labs here in Ontario won't give me one without a Drs requisition (apparently even if I want to pay :( ). So we are considering going and sitting in a walk in clinic to get that requisition/keep working on getting an appointment with family Dr for the moment she returns aug 3.

So sorry you have to wait that long! I don't really have an answer for you.... But my experience so far is that mine has only gone up. I had a thyroid level of 6 a couple months before I got pregnant, and was put on 50 mcg of levothyroxine, which brought it back down to normal. When I was tested at 12 weeks, it was back up to a 4, so the doctor upped my meds to 75 mcg. The doctor said that during pregnancy under a 3.5 is desired, so you're probably ok until your doctor is back. Try not to stress!

  • ive been taking synthroid for the last year for my thyroid. During my first trimester blood work they found it was off again and increased my dose from 50 to 75 similar to @makeshifwings. my dr said its normal for it to fluctuate during pregnancy and I will go back in for follow up blood work next week. I'd try not to stress about it too much and wait for your dr to be back to follow up.
  • Levothyroxine is a long acting thyroid medication and takes 6-8 weeks to fully leave the body after you stop taking it. Rechecking the TSH on August 13 will give you some idea if you need to go back on the levothyroxine, but another blood test should be ordered down the road as well. It is normal for the thyroid to fluctuate during pregnancy.

Thanks ladies your guidance has made me feel more reassured. I've done some reading too and am feeling more comfortable with the Drs plan.

Update: family Dr has emailed me back and is going to prepare an electronic requisition for me so I can have my tsh levels checked a week before the ob visit. Feeling reassured by that. Thanks everyone!
