We banked our son's blood and tissue and will with this one as well. My husband has MS so to us it was important as they are currently doing research with the tissue. God forbid any of our child are diagnosed with it we want to know we did everything we could. Could very well be that we never end up using it and nothing ever develops but we look at it as insurance. That being said, if there were no illnesses present I don't think we would bank, as it is very costly.
My MIL is currently battling cancer and having issues with her bone marrow. My husband asked me to look into if banking the chord blood could possibly help her. Normally due to the expensive of private banking we wouldn't have considered it.
I donated with my first child and I'm glad I did. They will contact us to be sure that we don't need it prior to donating it. I would donate this time but the hospital doesn't do it. Different hospital.
I wanted to donate, but it looks like I should have made the decision before 34 weeks. Now I don't qualify. I personally decided against banking after doing a lot of research. There are very few documented cases of the baby actually being able to use their own cord blood to cure a disease. And the diseases that is does cure are very rare. However, I think it's great that this is out there as an option for people if you have the means.
I'm interested in the subject as well. Doctor brought it up during our appointment today. The husband and I have been talking about it for a while. Still on the fence, mostly because of cost.
