Pulmonary embolism scare

I've had shortness of breath for awhile now which I thought was just my asthma flaring up. I also have had horrible leg cramps. Yesterday I had sharp chest pain on the right side shooting into my back. I had to work so I dealt with it until it was still bothering me hours later. I called the dr on call at my practice who said go to the er. My EKG showed abnormalities consistent with a pulmonary embolism but after an X-ray and ctscan of my chest, they couldn't find it. I went home still in pain but not as much. Right now I feel fine. Anyone ever go through this? I'm worried about the radiation but as the dr told me the benefits of being sure outweighed the risks of missing the clot and dying.

  • Holy crap! I hope you feel better and everything is a-okay. As far as radiation goes current X-rays have very low radiation and the need for urgent treatment surpassed any risk. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. T&Ps that this was just a scare and you get feeling better ASAP.
  • I had a cat scan done because I am high risk due to a previous blood clot. They used three lead blankets which kept out 99.9% of radiation. Iv spoke to a tech who said there is nothing to worry about and now the machines are being made to reduce the intake of radiation. I was experiencing shortness of breathe and light wheezing. Thankfully no clot but I was very scared in general. I do use blood thinners on a daily to prevent clots. Clots are formed also from hormones. Just keep an eye on those symptoms. One symptom I had was very low oxygen and I couldn't even complete a sentence without coughing. My clot was in the lung. Leg cramps are very common with pregnancy and shortness of breathe. But like I said keep an eye, if you feel like it's getting worse, go back. Better safe than sorry
  • I had to go for an emergency ultrasound of my leg on Thursday due to pain in my leg (behind the knee) that was going on since Sunday. They worried it was a blood clot and told me to drop everything and go immediately. It's frightening! I'm glad everything is ok with you. I cant imagine that type of a scare!

For me they found fluid behind my knee. Probably a soft tissue injury from my leg day workout on Saturday. Glad it wasn't a clot!!
  • That sounds very scary! Glad you are okay and prayers that the rest of your pregnancy goes smooth!

  • Thanks everyone. I feel much better today though I added an inhaler. I do so much walking at work it's hard to see how I could get a blood clot but I guess the extra fluid doesn't help. They told me if I wore a shield in the ctscan it would make the radiation concentrate more on that area. But baby boy is kicking away and seems to be fine.
  • I had to get a ct scan done during this pregnancy as well for shortness of breath. Mine showed signs of an infection so the dr. Put me on a zpak which seemed to help. I too walk a lot at my job and never thought that clots could be issue. Try and relax as much as you can. Hope you feel better soon
  • So sorry you're dealing with this!! Prayers for you and your baby!!
