Baby Names

those names you don't know whether you like or not

I have a few. Jocasta is one. Apparently Oedipus's mother had a fashionable name in turn of the century England.. :\

  • I feel the same about Maeve and Aurora. I want to love them, but I'm not sure if I do.

I also have to say Aurora. It was on our list way in the beginning but we both felt that when we said it out loud it didn't roll off the tongue as easily as we would like.

  • My issue is usually that I like the name, but it reminds me of someone I'd rather not be reminded of. And then I debate if it's a strong enough association to matter or not. Take Danielle, for example. I like the name. But Danielle was the girl in elementary school who picked her nose and ate paste. Is that a strong enough association that I can't name my kid that? Don't know.

This is actually our problem with Aurora too. My in-laws also can't say it. At all. My husband thinks that is extremely funny but I really don't want to be in the business of trolling my in-laws :)

Ditto.  I'm in the field of social work and two of my first clients were teenage boys named "Matthew"... they were BSC and two of the most challenging clients I've worked with.  While Matthew is a totally acceptable name, I will never, ever, use it as a name for one of my children.  Other names have been ruined for me as well.

I'm there with Sara(h) - not only did my husband date about five of them in his life, he THEN HAD THE AUDACITY to suggest putting it on the baby name list. It's a nice name though.

  • I feel that way about the name Sloane. I think I like it, but I just can never be completely sure..
  • I work in a town called Aurora, so I couldn't see it as a name. I actually live near several towns that are names... Aurora, Geneva, Rochelle...
  • We adore the name Aurora and truly wanted to use it but our last name has the OR sound so it's too rhymy.
  • I feel that way about the name Sloane. I think I like it, but I just can never be completely sure..

This is the first name that came to mind for me!

I have a real bone to pick with people who choose literary/historical names and don't know the reference is not a happy one. Lavinia is one that makes me twitch. Pretty name, horrific reference (just read the synopsis of Titus Andronicus if you don't understand...)

As far as names I like but I'm just not sure about, Landon would definitely be on that list. I like it, but I also sort of side-eye it. Regan for a girl is another one that I sort of like, but just can't quite do.

I never knew my grandma would have so much trouble with "Elijah" when we named our son. I've heard every possible pronunciation out of her mouth and seen multiple ridiculous spellings including "Eliagah". He's referred to as Eli by everyone except the one who can't say his full name. Go figure.

P.S. Sorry to be off topic. The way this convo went, I was distracted. I want to like unisex names like Jordan, Taylor, and Sam. I just can't -maybe....
  • My husband and I have a category for those names when we are discussing possible names --names we like...on someone else's kid--

We both feel that way about the name Willa and my husband really likes Penelope, but I just can't quite get on board with it. I really like all of the possible nicknames, but I just don't see it as a grown up name.

I kind of liked it too but it feels like a Mean Girl name - like a girl "Sloan" would be one of those chicks who is mean to everybody. It just feels like that kind of a name to me. So I don't know if I could get on board with it, even though it's pretty.

Yeah, my aunt messed up my niece's middle name when she was born. She gave her this really beautiful platinum trinket with her name emblazoned on it but somehow managed to spell her middle name in a totally off the wall way. My niece's middle name is Jayda. I could see her misspelling it "Jada" or something. But the trinket arrived saying "Jeddeh". We have no idea how that could possibly have happened :)

Lol DH suggested Lavinia though we were both aware of the literary reference, which is part of the reason I turned it down.

My sons name is Seth. I get that it some people would have difficulty with it but it's crazy how many times I have to spell it out for people. There are friends and family who still call him Zeth or Zach, no matter how many times we correct them. He's 6. This still happens with the same people.
  • My brother is Jacob. When he was born, my grandmother said she'd never heard of that name before. Really??

The name I can't make up my mind on is Tully. It's a legit name. DH loves it. I love it for someone else's kid.

THIS. My Husband is currently in love with Penelope, but there's something about it I just don't like... Regan is pretty, but it has the literary reference problem for me, too. King Lear, anyone? It's too bad that I don't like the youngest's name, Cordelia...

    Maisy and Hazel.
I like the sound of them but they're becoming popular and I think they suit children and seniors but just not adults.
  • Jordan and all iterations of it for a girl.

  • Jeremiah. I like it, but then again I don't. Maybe due to the song?
If we ever have a boy, I may try to convince DH to go with this though because he wants a "J" name for a boy and is stuck on Jaden. I liked it 10 years ago when we first talked about baby names, now it's too popular.

  • Along those lines....what do you think of Tigerlily? I think it's cool but also might just be too weird.

Coco... I know it's a regularly used and accepted name, but I can't help but kind of side eye it.

Edit: I've just discovered, after readiNo further down the board, that Matilda is a name I like but hate, too

It's a pretty flower, but maybe a bit aggressive for a child.

At least do Wendy if you're going to do a Peter Pan reference. Also, I agree with pretty much all names already listed.
  • Olive.

Love it for a little girl, but cannot picture an adult with the name.

Right now, every name is in that category for me... The more I say it/ think about it. The less I like it. I'm completely lost. It's so hard!

Kristen Chenoweth played an Olive on Pushing Up Daisies and it's one of the names I'm considering. IDK why but it seems British to me.

  • @lokelove  I love that you mentioned Tigerlily! I have a lot of Native American in my ethnicity, but not enough to "look the part". Sometimes I wish I had more so that I could get away with naming my child Tigerlily. I know it's a bit ridiculous, but for some reason I'm obsessed with the name. I could never actually do it, but I wish it was more acceptable.

Olive was my great granny's name. She is native. Her full name was Olive Waite (pronounced way-tee) Lastname and we are considering Olive. To me it's an old lady name as "Nana O" had it :) it worked on her.
