Opinions are sometimes wrong

I just came across this and it reminded me of the arguments we get into on here. I find that usually someone or a few people want their opinion validated even if it is not correct.
Hope you find this interesting too and that it doesn't start another dramatic fight.

  • Great article!
  • Love the article (except for the part about water expansion because that is incorrect) but the insight on the subject of opinions is simply very well written.
Maybe more people on this BMB will read it?? One can only hope ;)
    Thank you for sharing.
  • Love it.

    And are there hats?
  • Of course, there are hats...

    And they're fabulous!

She stated that was an opinion... Is that the part you're talking about? That water expands because of the shape of the molecule?

Hey @CMDD thanks for the refreshing article!
And not really my wheelhouse since chem 101 but pretty sure that water expanding fact still holds...

    Fantastically accurate article!

  • @Whovian84 , you complete me. And not just because of your screen name.

I think the majority of the arguments (and I mean the fussy fights, not the actual debates) come from a serious lack of ability to disagree with someone AND back up your own philosophy or opinion. And a really unhealthy drive to be "right".
  • Slightly off topic, I think the arguments on our board are a little tame. I've done some exploring and I must say... yikes at some of the stuff I've seen.

On another note, seems to me, people don't seem to know the difference between fact and opinion if other people validate said opinion. Also, this is the Internet and we aren't voice messaging each other. Some people lose their real life behavior behind a screen name and say some rude things that they wouldn't usually say. Somethings are most likely often read incorrectly. It's really a hit or miss kinda thing. It is all in the recipe for escalating a thread to Def con 4.

But this is just MY assessment of things. Lol not trying to stir the pot or create any mud. Just sharing my thoughts like the pps.

@jonesy288 they are totally tame!! I agree.
  • Haha, I saw this article the other day. LOVED it, so glad you posted it here!
  • Yeah, I haven't looked on other boards as much (no time!), but the recent ones that have been shut down (fisting, etc) got a little out of hand. I can't imagine what those other boards must look like!

Champagne flutes as favors is one to take a gander at. May give you an insight to how things work over there.

I'm also confused by your comment about water expansion? One of the unique properties of water is that it expands as it freezes. I distinctly recall this fact being in my college textbooks for biology, chemistry, and oceanography. I'm a science teacher and I always discuss this with my students when we go over the boiling and freezing point of water.

Fun fact: Water becomes more dense as it becomes colder until it reaches 4 degrees Celsius, at which point its density decreases until it becomes ice. This is why water is colder the deeper you go, but ice is at the surface.
