Tongue tie

has anyone else had to deal with tongue tie? We just got diagnosed today and am wondering if we should persue the procedure to eliminate it or just proceed with feeding as is. Would love any stories on both sides. Our pediatrician said we can wait and see if we want. Thanks!

What has feeding been like? If it is painful for you, I would just do the procedure. It's pretty quick from what I understand. But, no personal experience here, so I won't be offended if your take This with a grain of salt!

ETA I feel sheepish. Just put two and two together. (I was literally thinking, didn't o just read something she wrote?)

My new response: What will make you feel most happy? Baby will thrive either way... If you want to nurse, then go for it. If this has all been to stressful, don't feel bad. Go with your gut.

No worries! I will keep breastfeeding but the pain is obviously not fun. I know in time the pain on me will go away but not sure if it is worth the procedure for the little man. Apparently some babies that don't get it done sometimes have speech issues later which I would hate to have happen.

My lo was tongue tied and I breastfed him with success until he was 1 month then we had the procedure done. He was pretty significantly tongue tied and the pedi was a little worried about his speech in the future. It was a very simple procedure and very fast. My husband held him on his lap and the dr snipped it, right in the office, no anesthesia or anything. We waited the month to see if it would effect his nursing and we couldn't ever get a good look at his tongue. He bled for a couple minutes but nursed immediately following the procedure (which helps stop the bleeding) and was fine. (My husband said it was cool to watch but I wanted nothing to do with it haha!) when we got home he was so cute, playing with his tongue, rolling it around in his mouth and sticking it out. And he he's been fine ever since. They usually suggest to clip it if baby is having trouble nursing or if they think it might effect speech (and they usually suggest doing it within the 1st 2 weeks of life so they don't lose too much weight from not being able to nurse) but if it's not either of those things you can leave it alone and baby will be fine. :-) hope this helps!! So helpful. Our lactation nurse mentioned the speech issue. I am an elem teacher so I know how taxing doing speech therapy can be (both time and money wise!) so that fact alone is making me lean towards doing it although I am so squeemish. He is gaining weight but my nipples are still so raw. I am consulting with the ENT next week so we will see.

Mine hurt really badly too!! Are you using lanolin? If I could've, I would have bought stock in that stuff! Use it EVERY TIME you nurse. It gets better!! I promise! It really isn't a big procedure, we talked to the ENT longer than it took for him to do it. No stitches, either. I do recommend you both wearing something that you don't mind getting blood on or invest in some dreft stain remover. He got a little on himself and me but not a lot. Also, nurse immediately following, the ENT might recommend it but you can always ask if you can use the room for a few min to nurse your lo and they should let you. I have to tell you that I didn't even cry, that's how quick it is (and I still cry everytime he gets shots!). It's your choice, I'm just telling you our experience, in case you decide to.

We had a tongue and upper lip tie. The procedure (laser) was very quick and very helpful!

We had a tongue tie. Nursing was uncomfortable but not super painful. The ENT recommended we cut it to help me and reduce the likelihood of speech issues.

The procedure is over in a snip! I promise you it's harder on you than them. Nursing was significantly better after we had it clipped.

We found out my LO was tongue tied at 6 weeks and after waiting for a referral for the ENT we got it clipped at 12 weeks. I'm SO glad we got it done and felt a little bad that I didn't get it done sooner after seeing how much range he had after. It made all the difference with our nursing too. It was literally a 5 min percedure. I would definitely recommend it.

My LO had a lip and tongue tie and BFing was so excruciating that it really messed up my supply. Got it taken care of when LO was 6 weeks and BFing has been (mostly) a breeze since! Good luck!

We had the procedure done yesterday. I cried my eyes out (I felt bad for hurting him and probably some post partum hormones)and was by myself since DH stayed home with the other two. He nursed well right after and seems ok now although he is making weird gurgling sounds. Anyone else have this?

Thanks for the advice and giving me a heads up on the procedure. It really helped me to feel prepared when I went in.
