Sudden severe heartburn. Help me! *update* gallbladder question

I've had mild heartburn on and off for the last month or so. Today I woke up and was in so much pain I was nearly to the point of tears. I took tums but threw them up not long after. I've tried crackers, maalox, tums, rolaids, but nothing has helped today. I even tried some apple cider vinegar, but that was a terrible idea. I haven't been able to keep anything down all day. Each time I throw up it just makes the pain worse. I have never experienced anything like this. I plan on calling the doc tomorrow, but for tonight, what do you ladies do for relief??

I'm so sorry. I have GERD so I know how horrible you're feeling right now. The best I can suggest is try to avoid fatty/greasy, spicy, and acidic foods as well as carbinated beverages. I usually stick to small meals. Things like a cold banana sometimes helps or a small portion of pudding, even a peanut butter sandwich. Try to keep fairly upright.

As a prescription my doctor has me taking protonix. I've tried everything else on the market and this has worked the best for me. It can also help with healing the esophageal damage.

I hope you can find some relief. Maybe someone else can offer more suggestions.

Added- if you can stand it, I find sucking on a tums is sometimes more helpful than chewing and swallowing it.

  • Try gaviscon! I find it helps so much more than tums.
  • I tried the gaviscon (I thought it was the same as maalox) it did help more than tums, but I've still been in a lot of pain. @Mizuiro007 I'm not sure if I need a prescription since this is the first time it's been so severe and lasted all day, but I'll keep that in mind! And I never thought about sucking on tums. I will have to give it a try.

There should be an over the counter medication (such as ranitidine Or it's called Zantac), I would definitely go in and see the pharmacist, they can make sure it's safe for pregnancy as well. I dealt with acid reflux for at one point for about a year (it felt like crushing chest pain). Did you try the gaviscon chews as well? They fizz up

My OB gave me a list of OTC medications the practice has approved. For heartburn they list Maalox, Mylanta, Pepcid, Zantac, and Tums. Your doctor should be able to tell you over the phone what they think is safe.

*Added- You may start having more trouble as the baby grows and pushes up more on your stomach.
  • I don't have bad heartburn, but my mother did. One thing she started doing was sleeping upright. I think she slept in the rocker recliner the last couple of months of her pregnancy, and tried eating foods higher in alkaline. Ate lots of cold yogurt too.

  • Two weeks after I gave birth to my first son, I had this problem & went to the E.R. It ended up being a gall bladder attack & I had to get my gall bladder removed. The pain was gone instantly! Hope you feel better soon!
  • I highly recommend Zantac. I took it this pregnancy and last. I would double check with your doctor but my doctor allows it. I usually use in conjunction with tums.

This happened to me too... Gallbladder attacks for me always started with a heartburn like feeling and I would throw up and be in so much pain (right side, right under my ribs). I hope it's not that and is just heartburn (even though that still sucks). If you aren't having the right sided pain it probably is just heartburn. Don't lay down after meals and try not to eat 3 hours before bed (easier said than done).

I would consult with your doctor, just I case it is something more severe but in the meantime think about all the hair baby has?

I have a new love of coconut water- it puts the fire out & tastes great- it may not be enough to do the trick alone if it's severe it may work in combination with something else.
  • I think you should call your doctor today, if you have an option to. There isn't any reason for you to stay in pain like this. Also, giving your doc a run down of all you have tried, may give them a better sense of what you should do to help you with this situation. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. I have GERD and Acid Reflux, but I have been blessed to not experience this. I'm only telling you what I would do in this situation. I hope it helps.

  • Thanks for the advice! The severe reflux just lasted one day. I have no idea what what caused it, as I keep track of what I eat.

I never thought about it being a gallbladder issue. I actually am concerned about that, as my sister, aunt, and grandma all had to have theirs removed after giving birth. I had a pain in my right side yesterday just under my ribs, but I thought it was just a stitch in my side.

When you had gallbladder pain, did you have trouble taking a deep breath?
  • Oh yeah!! It was like heart burn, a heart attack, & asthma attack all rolled into one. I had no idea what was going on & I seriously thought I was dieing. But the surgery is laproscopically(sp?) So it's non invasive & I was in & out the same day.

I don't have a gallbladder or appendix. I will say though, that you can still get heartburn, acid reflux and GERD even without the organ. I suggest you telling your OB ASAP and just making sure it was a fluke and that it isn't something more serious. Good luck and happy, healthy wishes your way.
