Maternity Clothing Metrics

So i was reading another thread that gave me an idea.

Since women's clothing designers seem to have major challenges with basic geometry, our sizes are pretty much a mystery and we have to actually try clothing on to know whether or not it's going to fit. While that system works fine for people who like shopping and DON'T get homicidal in malls, it's not such a good system for the rest of us who prefer to shop online.

I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we post metrics on the clothes we've ordered, our experience with sizing, quality and fit in relation to our body type and whether or not we'd recommend it to other people. Like net promotor data.

This can be especially helpful for those of us with weird body types such as myself (short, slight, boyish figure - suddenly sprouted porn-quality boobs overnight) as NOTHING is made for us. For example, I used to shop in kids and juniors, which was bad enough. But now it's impossible since becoming pregnant and I've had to go back to trial and error. I've been buying maternity stuff on Amazon from China - which is just bloody awful since the quality is often lacking and it takes three months to get here.

  • This is a great idea! I really like pink blush maternity and they do free shipping now. The things I've ordered have been pretty good quality and I've found I fit into the same sizes as prepregnancy. I'm pretty tall (5'10") and thin, so I might not be the best reference for the op haha. The pink blush maxis that I've ordered have been long enough for me, but I don't think they would be overly long to most other women.

  • (I'm going to start labeling my posts so people can identify the vendors more easily.)

I am quite short and pink blush is pretty good for me. Except that I ordered a maxi from them (this one) and it is SUPER LONG. Even in heels. I have to have it taken up.

But you guys, these "basic maxis" are BEAUTIFUL on. I feel like a 14th century princess in this dress, for real.

I ordered it to be a nightgown.

One head's up about Pink Blush though - there doesn't seem to be any way to view items in your previous orders. You can reorder them. You can view their shipping status. But no way to pull up links to the items you ordered. Which is a mild annoyance.

This is such a great idea. I've noticed so far that Old Navy runs HUGE and it's better to buy in the store because you can find the right size, AND the clearance deals are insane. I got a vintage style LBD and a little tweed number for $4 each. My retail ethics have gone a little out the window being pregnant because we have to stretch our budget so much.

Also Motherhood seems to run really small on me. Pre pregnancy, I was an average size 8/10 hourglass figure but my boobs are huge right now (like 36G). Their clothes aren't that great for big chested women as the drawstrings on the tops are too high and the dresses are always way too short on me. I think they're supposed to be knee length...

I've been really curious about how Asos maternity runs as they have some amazingly cute clothes at decent prices. Anyone have any experience with this brand? I don't want to buy online to have it fit weird.
  • Love this. Motherhood Maternity also runs huge! I have a few tops from there and I'm swimming in the smalls! I have a small frame though, so that might be the issue.

In designers (a random assortment of denim and items from denim brands that are maternity), I have been able to buy my prepregnancy size.

In Target (non maternity), I've had to go up one size in tops because of both expanding bump and breasts. In bottoms, I haven't purchased anything in weeks, but elastic waist bands are in. I purchased several jogger type style items from various places and they all still fit. They have both denim versions and styles that can also work for career.

Ditto on the ASOS inquiry. I've been eyeing many of their maternity items.
  • H&M maternity jeans/jean shorts run small. I sized up, and they are still a little snug.
I'm tall and lean, and these are the only bottoms I've found that don't SWIM on me (chicken legs).
I have also found Target and Old Navy bottoms run big.

For tops i'm just wearing regular tops, but looking for extra long to cover waistband. Can't stand the empire waist thingy - maybe later on once my bump is extreme.
  • I've actually found Motherhood to be pretty true to size. I also found work pants on clearance for $20...score! Just a note-their fall collection should hit stores 2nd week in August. I think the lady was bored the day I went in there to find shorts & educated me.

Old Navy stuff is great price wise but tends to fit like a SACK if you are on the smaller end. XS is not small enough. I wasn't even TINY, I was 5'9 and 135 lbs! A few items work well enough to justify spending like, $4 on clearance though.
Is heartily apologizing to her child in advance for genes that predispose them to shitty vision and being Too Damn Tall.
  • My experience has been with maternity jeans. I am 5'8" and a size 4 before I got pregnant. Gap jeans and shorts have been perfectly true to size for me, and comfy! If you shop the clearance there are some good deals too! Old Navy jeans were too small in a 4 but too big in a 6.
  • I'm between sizes in old navy too. At least I was pre mat. Maternity line might be different.
