Growth ultrasound

I had my 36 week appointment today and my belly is measuring a little small and I haven't gained any weight in 6 weeks so my ob scheduled me for an ultrasound just in case. I KNOW these measurements are just estimations and don't necessarily mean anything and even my ob said the ultrasound is just more of a precaution and she's not too worried. But of course anytime a doctor tells you there's even a small chance something could be wrong a mom is going to worry so I'd just like to ask for thoughts and prayers that everything is ok for my peace of mind. Thank you ladies.

Re: Growth ultrasound

  • Ive been on watch since 30 weeks, maybe earlier, for the same sort of thing. DD has been steadily dropping percentiles since then (at least! We werent measuring before). From what we have learned the biggest indicator of their health is good movement, so as long as you're feeling them, you're probably good to go! And if the ultrasound shows something that would cause them to induce, 36 weeks isnt ideal, but far from unheard of. Hope everything looks perfect!

  • Many thoughts and prayers. I got the same news at 34 weeks and was nervous as well. I had not gained weight since 28 weeks and was put on a very high protein diet to gain weight which is challenging with diabetes. I have weekly NST's and scans. My LO is very healthy, but small and still measuring about a month behind at 37w4d. However, is gaining ounces. Just slowly. And yes, ultrasounds have a margin of error. Take it one day at a time. I pray all turns out well. Great things come in small packages.
  • Hope your ultrasound goes well and it just gives you peace of mind! Keep us updated! Sending good vibes your way

  • I had this last pregnancy. DS always measured small. He was born 5 lbs 9 oz at 39 weeks perfectly healthy. At 2 yrs old he is finally on the growth charts (2%) But small doesn't mean unhealthy. He is wonderfully healthy and developing well in all areas. Don't worry till they give you reason to. T&P this is the same for you.

  • All the best to you and your family right now. It's good your OB is being extra cautious, try to keep in mind that all is likely A-ok!

  • I hope the ultrasound puts any and all concerns to rest and that you get to see baby one more time before he/she arrives!
  • I have been consistently measuring 2-3 weeks behind, and at 38 weeks I have only gained a total of 7lbs. They did a growth ultrasound for the same reasons for me at 35 weeks. They told me she was measuring 1 week ahead at the ultrasound and supposedly already 6.5lbs at that point. So my point is try not to worry because they can only guess, and more then likely the baby is perfectly fine and growing. As long as you are feeling consistent movements etc I'm sure everything is ok :)

  • This happened to me with both of my previous pregnancies and this one as well.  For DD we did extra monitoring towards the end, NST's and growth scans every week.  With this third pregnancy I am getting weekly NSTs and biweekly scans since my doctor is assuming I just make small babies.  Both my babies so far where born in the 5lb range and caught up with the growth charts within weeks/months of being delivered and are healthy children.  I wouldn't worry too much.  They may do some extra monitoring or suggest inducing, but in the long run as long as they are moving normally and there are no cord or placenta issues it really isn't too big of a deal!

Hope your US goes well and many many thoughts and prayers for you and your baby!
  • Thank you ladies! I truly do appreciate all the support and advice I get on this board! A lot of times it's alot better asking for it here because some of my family tend to freak out worse than I do and that just stresses me out more. I'm trying not to worry too much and I will be glad to get to see my little boy on the ultrasound Friday. Even tho the wait is going to give me more time to worry I'm taking it as a good sign that my ob wasn't so worried that she wanted it done immediately.
  • Hope everything goes good with your US. Many T&p's
  • I have my growth scan today also. She is small little nugget. She is measuring five weeks behind. I know in my heart she is okay. Thoughts and prayers momma. Keep us posted

I had the opposite problem a few weeks they were worried he was too big. We went for an ultrasound and he was perfectly on track apprerently my doctor was measuring me wrong! Try not to worry too much ☺ I bet your baby is fine.
  • Don't worry! I'm in the same boat! My first son was only 5lb 5oz born at 39 weeks. I'm pregnant with my second son now and they noticed a slow in his growth at 33 weeks so I've been coming in for bi-weekly scans to check the growth. I'm 37 weeks now and they're going back to tell me today if they think I should be induced based on his size. He is a healthy, active baby but the doctors think that if he isn't growing much on the inside that he would be better off delivered a bit early so he can gain weight on the outside. For the record, my son who was born 5lb 5oz is 16 months now and is spot on where he should be for his growth and weight. In fact, he charts taller than most toddlers his age! They all gain the weight and grow, it's just that some mommies give birth to smaller babies and there's nothing wrong with that! Just remember to count those kicks and movements and be aware of how youre feeling! I'm sure everything will be fine for you though try not to worry :)
  • Praying for you and your sweet baby!
  • Thank you guys. He is still moving like crazy.Every time I feel him move it makes me feel better.
  • Thoughts and prayers that you feel better after your scan. Try to remind yourself that everyone carries different and babies grow at different rates, it does not necessarily mean anything is wrong. I had a level II this pregnancy due to some issues on DH's side of the family and the high risk Dr kept focusing on my son's birth weight and saying maybe they should monitor DD's growth for the rest of my pregnancy - kind of pissed me off because yes he was on the small side, but my Dr, his pedi, and the hospital all were not concerned and it was NOT why I was sent for my level II. Remind yourself too that the scale for baby's weight is an "average" and being below "average" does not mean anything is wrong, just compared to "X" other babies that they looked at, your baby is smaller, which is okay! Keep us posted on your results!
  • Thinking good thoughts for you! Hope everything goes well with your ultrasound.
  • Thoughts and prayers for you mama, I cannot imagine the worry you are feeling. I hope you are able to relax and rest assured you've done everything you can to make a perfect baby!
  • I just had my ultrasound and according to what the machine calculated baby is measuring ahead by about two weeks at 7 lb 5 oz. So now I'm really confused. The ultrasound tech said being so late in the day my doctor might not have time to get the results so I probably won't hear from her until Monday.
  • I am so glad everything went well. Maybe you were a little dehydrated or baby was in an awkward position when you were measured. Even if it's Monday before you hear anything, try and find peace of mind that LO is healthy and happy. This late in the game error is normal.
  • I'm glad it went well for you
  • Mjones, that's good news! He's a good size, your doctor just measured wrong or the US is a little high. Either way the babe is doing well. Hopefully Monday will put your fears to rest!
  • In so glad to hear your baby is doing well!
  • Im sorry I missed your original post, but im glad it seems things went well with the US..keep us posted tomorrow to let us know what the doctor says about it all!! Will be thinking about you!
  • Glad everything turned out ok!! Sorry they made you worry like that.. but I guess mom's never stop worrying!
  • Thanks again ladies! Will definitely keep you all posted tomorrow.
  • The doctor said everything looks great on the ultrasound, I have a healthy little boy in there I'm just built small so it throws the measurements off a little. My Strep B did come back positive but that's no big deal, just have to get the antibiotics while in labor. Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers!
