Plane travel with breast milk

Has anyone traveled with breast milk? I'd like to keep it frozen for the trip, and am also wondering how TSA deals with the milk and pump. Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Plane travel with breast milk

  • I traveled with pre-made formula and pedialyte. TSA advised us ahead of time to pull it out of our carry on and put it through the normal scanner. We had it in a Medela bag with an ice pack. They then pulled it off for additional scanning. They had me open each bottle and put a test strip in it. Whole process took about 10-15 extra min so be aware of that. Not sure about frozen milk - you may have to ask on that one. They left our ice pack alone for what it's worth. Pump should be no prob to go through regular security. Have fun!

  • Yes same as pp. TSA took all my breast milk and checked it and put strips in it. Mine wasn't frozen though so I'm not sure how it will work with that.
  • When I travelled with mine (wasn't frozen), they hand inspected at one airport, and then on the way back they put it into some sort of machine. I also had to have my hands "scanned". It didn't take very long, they did it while we were walking through security so didn't add any extra time on for us.

Your pump can be carried on the plane, and it is considered medical equipment so it doesn't count as an official item of luggage. So you can bring your pump, and then a carry on (like a diaper bag) and one personal item (your purse).

  • Thanks for the input:)
  • On the way to my destination with no pumped milk my bag got picked for extra check cause of the pump. I guess they thought it was a bomb. They took out everything and checked it. The agent said as long as the milk was frozen on the way back it would be fine. So, I took his advice and had it all frozen and no issues on the way back
  • I've never traveled with breast milk bit I know you can keep it cold/frozen with dry ice.

DH asked the airport and they said they will confiscate it in most airports

Definitely not true. You can bring snacks and drinks for any young child it just has to be checked.

I don't live in the US, but i hope you guys are right!! I'm still reluctant to take any pumped milk, i'd sob if they took it away lol.

I'll double check with DH and see exactly who he asked there. Thanks!
