Cloth Diapers...

My husband and I are cloth diapering, but I have NO IDEA which ones to go with. There seems to be so many options!  I know that we are going to do disposables for the first month, or until baby can fit into the "one-size fits all diaper."  Any one else cloth diapering?  Which company are you going with?

Re: Cloth Diapers...

  • I have no personal experience but 3 different friends all recommended bum genius elemental so that's what we are going to try.
  • Loading the player...
  • I just looked for sales and cute prints. Zulilly has them all the time. All of mine are the snap one size diapers and I probably have 6 different brands in my stash and honestly feel they all work the same. They all take the same microfiber inserts that can be single, double or even triple stuffed.
  • I decided to go with prefolds/fitteds and covers mostly for the cost factor but also because I like that they're 100% cotton and we will most likely still get some use out of the prefolds when she grows out of a size.
We got a bunch of green mountain prefolds(newborn and small), a few green mountain fitteds(newborn and small), and rumparooz covers(newborn and one-size). Can't say how good they are because we haven't used them yet but the green mountain diapers seem like great quality and I've heard great things about them. I also got a free bumgenius 4.0 when I ordered the covers and it looks really nice but I'm not a huge fan of the synthetic materials so I'm not sure yet whether I want to purchase more of that style of diaper although they do seem more convenient for on the go or if someone else is changing her.
There really are a ton of options and a lot of it seems to come down to getting a good fit for your baby(some seem better for long skinny babies, some better for chubby legs, ect.) so I'm planning on trying a few styles once she fits in the one-size to see what works best for us.
  • Oh, girl. CD can be overwhelming at first and I wish there was a short answer for you, but there's just not. You really need to try a few different brands at first to figure out what works for you. Some people love Charlie Banana dipes but they didn't work for us. Bum Genius worked the best for us but I'm sure other people have hated them. A good way to try a few is to buy used or rent some from a website.
Join Fluff Love & CD Science for a lot of great info on starting CD.

Agreed! FTM planning to CD. I joined the Fluff Love & CD Science and it's been super helpful. I've built a pretty solid stash with lots of variety, mostly used, and I'll just sellb what we don't end up liking. I have heard over and over that covers and prefolds are way to go to start with newborns. I'm also getting a few charcoal bamboo inserts, too. But seriously, check out Fluff Love!

It also depends on your budget. Since I'm wanting to "try" cloth, I didn't want to blow a ton of money and end up giving up. After a LOT of research, I bought the following: (They're all very nice for the price)
    •Pocket diapers
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SWI7BO0/ref=yo_ii_img
•Prefolds, that I'll use with several Buttons covers. Prefolds are great bc they have many different uses, and you can use them to stuff the pocket diapers when baby grows out of the prefolds.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004EWGDJC/ref=yo_ii_img
•Buttons covers: good quality, 1 size covers.
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AEH2GOM/ref=yo_ii_img
    •Snappi's for the prefolds
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004YWJYWA/ref=yo_ii_img
Try Pinterest for lots of great tips for caring for diapers, etc... I also use regular detergent on them. That's something you'll have to figure out too.. How you'll go about washing and what not, and there's tons of great advice/tips on Pinterest!
  • My friend owns a diaper service and swears by thirsties covers. You can use pre-folds or inserts with the covers. Same friend also said diapers are like jeans- some diapers fit some bodies better. I purchased some thirsties covers and some flip covers (a bum genius brand). i personally don't like pocket diapers or all in ones.
  • Utilize Fluff Love University... extremely helpful! It's taken me about 4 months to figure it out as far as what to purchase and my washing routines and I'm sure will take a few more months (or years) once I actually put it all to practice on baby. Good luck!!
  • I'm a first time mom and we decided to go the cloth diaper route to save money on our monthly bills. We bought 25 prefolds, 3 snappis, and 4 thirsties duo wrap covers (we will be getting more covers and prefolds to add in too I think). We figured they would be good to start out with when our LO is still too small for AIO's.

We were gifted 22 Bumgenius Freetimes as well and we will be using them once our baby is big enough. We will probably still mix in prefolds when he's between sizes on the snaps of the BG diapers, or if I get behind on the laundry. I like that the BG ones are all in one and don't require stuffing. They say not to dry them in the dryer so I have a drying rack for them and have found that they dry within just a few hours inside on that rack. That's a bonus as it cuts down on our energy bills with not having to run the dryer constantly ;-) I'm hoping that the BG diapers work for our little guy since we have so many!
  • We used BG 4.0 with both kids as well as some fuzzi bunz but the Bum Genius were for sure our favorites.

  • BG elementals are my favorite one size diaper. But for newborns I like green mountain prefolds and thirsties covers.

We are using Bum Genius Freetime once the LO is big enough. I like them since they are as easy as a disposable for when someone else is changing the diaper.
  • Grovia, Grovia, Grovia! I've tried seeral brands and none have come close to my Grovias! They have a hybrid system which you can use either snap in inserts (organic cotton is what I use), or you can use the shell + prefolds, or use the shell plus their disposable (and chemical free and biodegrable) insert called biosoakers which hold up super well!

Their aios are all organic cotton as well.

The company's ethics are superior to other brands! The company runs a BST group on FB, which the owner of Grovia moderates. She will not allow someone to resell a diaper (no matter how HTF the print is) for over retail value (this includes shipping). Their Grovia families group is amazing as well for support and helpfulness and no one has ever been rude or hateful to one another because .... It's moderated again by the founder of Grovia, Kim Ormsy. Who will also help you personally troubleshoot any cloth diaperin problems you may be having! How many other companies do you know of that do this? Not many.
  • Best advice - don't buy all of one kind. Every baby fits then differently. But a few of each then buy more of what works. We had 20 bum genius and they didn't work. Bad investment. Now we use morakicloth.com. Love them. But no diaper is perfect for every baby. Just like some use pampers some Huggies etc. Also one size won't always fit newborn. And if they do, they still might look silly and big. So we buy some newborns to use a few months. Then switch to one size. Hoping my morakis work for baby #2 since I still have them all.

  • I agree with pps, buy a few different kinds and see what works best for you. I bought all fuzzibunz one size before my first and they didn't work great while she was smaller (prob up until about 6 months we had leaking problems because of fit). I ended up buying some sized pocket diapers as well, applecheeks brand, which I loved! Now though, the fuzzibunz are working great and in general we love cloth! I will say bamboo inserts are awesome and super absorbent, if you are planning to night-time cloth diaper I would try some bamboo. I personally (and DH) are a fan of the pocket, one size diaper style, I think it's most similar to the convenience of disposable diapers but you do have to have a larger stash or do laundry more often.
  • Going with bumgenius 4.0 a friend of mine that has 3 kids used them for all hers and said they were her favorite. So as a FTM, I'm trusting her. She did say the most important thing was to get the poo sprayer that atteches to the toilet to clean the solids off before they go into the wash. And that the snaps are a thousand times better than the velcro. Also because the are one size, a lot of the really little 0-3mo clothes don't fit over the bulk. Baby may go straight from newborn to 3-6mo to contain there booty.

Thanks!  It really is overwhelming!  They all look the same to me, but moms seem to be so opinionated.  Its hard to understand why some brands, rumperooz are so expensive, and others, are half the price! Thanks for all of your advice!

@countryandlace I posted this a little while back but this is a great starter chart and has some of the better ranked brands on the right side (I say that with the caveat that it is not exclusive, you might find a brand that works better for you)
  • Forgot to attach!
  • I never really understand why people bother spraying poop off the diapers, seems like poop would spray everywhere.... ? Maybe if you formula feed? If you bf then newborn poop is completely water soluble and you don't actually have to get it off before you throw it in the wash (also my washer has a pre-rinse feature that I always use for diapers). Once baby is eating solids we use biodegradable flushable diaper liners (they look & feel like dryer sheets) that catch the solids in the diaper which we then just dump into the toilet and flush. So easy!!

Although a lot of diaper liners say they are "flushable", they're not recommended for septic tanks, and have a bad rep for causing plumbing issues. Generally using a diaper sprayer it's not hard to keep from spraying poop everywhere, and it's better to have the poop off the diaper and for the diaper to be "wet" if you intend on not washing immediately to reduce staining. (From having the poop residue sit in the diaper for a couple days) Liners have to be repeatedly purchased, which might detract from the savings of cloth diapering, where a sprayer is a one time purchase that MANY moms swear by. And you could always use/make a diaper sprayer shield if you're really having issues with "spraying poop everywhere."

Those liners worked great for DD. She pooped one solid poop a day and it was predictable. We use one maybe 2 liners a day. DS on the other hand never had a solid poop until he was potty trained and he continued to poop 3-5x a day well after starting solid food. The loose poop was never contained by the liner and dunking and swishing poopy diapers in the toilet
Is not fun. Diaper sprayer was a game changer with him.

  • We never got a sprayer because we couldn't find one that would prevent dirty water from going back into the clean water line. We always did the dunk and swish.

Ah, that makes sense, didn't know about the septic tank thing. I've never used a diaper sprayer but the liners have always just worked really well for us, I don't find them that expensive where I am. I've also never had any issues with staining really but I've occasionally bleached just my inserts and that seems to work.

I have many different types I have built my stash from buying second hand. I have over 100 diapers And have only paid 300$ for it all... I am loving my Kushies right now but have fuzzy bunz. kawaii baby, some home made ones . Fitted and prefds from Kushies

If you want to try I would suggest getting some second hand that way you can find what works for you at a low cost and then build your stash.
