Food Journal

Gah! So I went to my midwife yesterday for my 12 week appointment and it was amazing! Because I have lost 17 lbs so far this pregnancy my midwife wants me to start keeping a food journal so that she can review it with me at my next few appointments. Does anyone know of any good ones I can buy that pertain more toward pregnancy and weight maintenance rather than weight loss? Everything I have seen is geared more toward weight loss and foodies that want to keep recipes for future foodie endeavors.

On another note, my midwife gave me something pretty cool at my appointment that I thought I would share with y'all! I know it's cute to compare our growing little babies to fruit, but I was given a life size replica of what our LO's actually look like at 11-12 weeks....

Re: Food Journal

  • Why not just get a little notebook (spiral, moleskine, whatever)? There's no reason it has to be anything fancy, or even anything marketed to be a food journal.

  • I use the Myfitnesspal app but have thought about trying something else more geared toward pregnant women, too. That was so cool of your midwife. How neat to have something tangible like that!

  • I used an app called "lose it" pre-pregnancy. Obviously wouldn't be using it for the same reasons but it allows you to track all of your food and calories. Are you getting sick a lot? Or just nothing sounds good?
  • I have been super sick, and what little I have been able to force myself to eat usually comes right back up. My life consists of taking a bite of cracker every 10 minutes and seeing how I feel before attempting to take another bite.

  • I think I'd be annoyed if a saw a midwife that expected me to keep a food journal. I know what food is healthy and what isn't. I try to eat ok, but nausea/cravings/aversions play a role.
I would not want to review what I'd eaten with a midwife!

  • My fitness pal has a feature where you can choose to either maintain or gain weight and it adjusts your calorie needs for you. I love this app because it has almost every food and exercise in it and breaks what you eat down so you can see exactly what nutrients you are getting.

My midwife is having me keep a journal too. I just write stuff down in a notebook. The point of keeping the food journal isn't to get all defensive about what you're eating or her to get all judgey. It is so she can know what nutrients you're getting or not getting so she can help avoid things like GD and other problems that can happen while pregnant. I lived off cereal when I was ad throwing up all day long and when she checked my nutrient levels I was terribly deficient and a lot of things. Now that I'm feeling better it is nice to have that accountability. I like that she doesn't accept a lot of pregnancy problems as unavoidable and works with moms to make sure we can stay as healthy as possible

This is exactly what she wants it for!

I've also been using the Lose It app to track my food. It's been helpful to see where I'm at with calories and protein intake for the day. It also helps me make sure I'm eating balanced meals. (Did I mention that all I want to eat is ice cream right now? Ha-ha) The app has a barcode scanner that makes it really easy to track foods like cashew milk or cereals.

    Edit: additional app info added.
  • I love the my fitness pal app. It's free and easy to use on your phone. I used it to lose 20lbs before my wedding and now have it set to "maintain" for first trimester and will set it to "gain 0.5/wk" my second trimester. For several weeks when nausea was really bad I didn't follow it at all, all I could eat were carbs and I didn't want to see what my nutrient break down was! Ha ha but now I can eat a little more healthy so I'll start using it again.
  • I also use myfitnesspal. My aunt lost half her weight food journaling. I also like doing it because it tells me my percentages of protein, carbs, & fat for the day & now I know why I crave meat so much because my protein is so low.
