Anyone else hate calling the doctor?

Anyone else hate calling the doctor? I just left a message because I haven't felt any movement for day and a half. I just cringe when I have to do it. I feel like the nurses just get these calls all day long and we all seem overly paranoid to them. Ugg.... I just hate it.

Honestly, if I didn't have any movement for a day and a half, and I didn't get through to a doctor, I would go to the hospital. I don't want to scare you, but my midwife said if I didn't feel movement for one day I should call her and get it checked out ASAP.

ETA: So if the nurses don't take you seriously, they're wrong! Good luck!

  • I hate calling them. Even for just a question because they make me come in then when they can't explain the issue they act like I was crying begging to come in. Ridiculous
  • I hate to, too. I called yesterday for the first time because I had a horrible headache. I felt so silly because my blood pressure was normal but I just needed to hear that I have nothing to worry about from my midwife. I almost called after the 4th of July weekend because I was feeling a huge decrease in movement, I gave myself until Monday for her to perk up and luckily she did. But if you are feeling NO movement I wouldn't wait around or feel any guilt for calling. Pleeeease go get checked asap. I don't want to scare you, but no movement is a serious concern. <3
  • I hate calling and always feel like I'm bugging them with my silly concerns. But I don't like calling for pizza or Chinese either, it's just my quirk. I get my words jumbled and stutter during voicemails.

But you're concern is not silly. Not at all. You need to make sure they return your call within an hour and call again or check in at Labor and Delivery. Movement is serious and they should take your concern very seriously. Call again, get answers.
  • I have called once.. and the nurses at my office are awesome! So nice and ask questions and are very supportive...didn't seem annoyed at all.  However, I still hate calling! I don't want to be an over paranoid bug about every small thing...so I don't call. I have never been one to complain about minor aches and pains and so well .. I just don't want to call because "its fine." My worry with having this mind set is that one day when its "just fine" it wont be! and I will be in beginning stages of labor or something and then end up having my baby in the car!! :( Need to find that line between annoying and being cautious...
  • If they don't call back, you can always pop intol L&D. I did that after not feeling little ones movements for 12 hours. I was stressed, so was he. They put me on a machine and it turns out he was wrigling around like a worm! Turns out that my stress was preventing me from feeling his little subtle movements!

    Follow your mom's intuition!

  • I would honestly rather have teeth pulled then call. The nurses always brush things off as no big deal. I called and told them I was having pain under my ribs (I was diagnosed with pre-e) and they said it was probably growing pains. When I went for my appointment today I ended up back in the hospital because my liver enzymes were crazy.
  • My OB insisted that I come in when my husband called her because of pain I was having. I told him I'm not going back unless my water breaks or I'm dying...lol.
  • I hate calling even though they are always really nice to me. I feel like they are going to think I'm being crazy when I call. Only once did the midwife kind of brush me off and get a little rude with me but I don't much care for her anyway. I never called with my first pregnancy and this time I know I've called at least 8-10 times. After I do call I am always relieved that I did and have some type of answer to my issue.
  • I feel the same. I feel like they think I'm crazy or annoying when I call. Although all nurses and my OB are always great and always answer my questions. I just feel like I'm bugging them with silly questions.
  • My Dr. gets upset when I don't call in and then mention something that had been bothering me at a regular appointment, so thankfully, no I don't feel bad. She gave me her personal cell so that I could text her directly if I was having trouble with the nursing line.

My other Dr. , I was more nervous calling in. I guess it sort of depends on the people/practice.

  • I've called in quite a few times and really appreciate the nurse line my clinic has; it's been super helpful to help calm my fears when I'm overreacting or to help me know when I should go in to get checked out.

I actually just called them this morning for the same reason; last night and this morning baby was much less active than normal. I was feeling some movement, but not nearly as much as I had been all day yesterday. I also have had super swollen feet for two days (but no other signs of pre-e) and was having more frequent round ligament pain than I had before. I felt much better after talking to the nurse, and she suggested that I drink something sugary and count the movements I have in the next 2 hours, then to call back if I didn't have at least 10 movements in those 2 hours. Sure enough, I drank some orange juice and baby was kicking away within 30 minutes.

I hope all turns out ok for you!

Please keep us updated! I'm with you, I hate calling or going in to get checked when I feel I'm being paranoid. But, I've gotten to the place where I feel that it is their job and even if they think it's silly, it's a valid concern because I'm worried and need that peace of mind.
  • I'm currently hooked up to all the monitors so we will see what happens... The office actually called back right away and insisted I come in ASAP. I've never been met with that reaction so I was surprised.

Please keep us updated, hoping everything is alright <3
  • I had the same problem, turns out I was in preterm labor and baby girl was just hiding it out in my back. She's already a goofball. Have you been having any contractions?
  • I work as a medical assistant and I can assure you that I would rather you annoy me with little questions then to just ignore it and let it go. In the end you are caring for 2 lives. Always use your best judgement.
  • I always hate calling, especially since I go in twice a week for biophysicals and NST's but about two weeks ago I was in so much pain I had to call and it turned out that I was in preterm labor. It's always better to call and they expect you to call if something just doesn't seem right! Movement has been an issue for my little man a few times but now I just have something high in sugar and count kicks for 2 hours and he always perks up. It's been a hard pregnancy on me but everything has always been perfect with my little man!! Good luck and try not to stress what the office staff may think, they are in the field of Women heaving babies and I'm sure have seen or heard everything!!
  • I hate it too and always feel like I'm probably overreacting, but I feel so much better afterwards. I would be lying if I said I haven't made my mother pretend to be me and call for me haha
  • Me too. I don't want to be the mom who cried wolf, but I have always received a positive response. Even when it turns out to be nothing all the doctors and nurses I have talked to over the past few years (two older kids) always say that it is better to err on the side of caution.
  • I went in this afternoon. I failed the NST and the biophysical ultrasound so they sent me to L & D for monitoring. I'm still here and everything here is coming out perfectly. The monitor is showing I'm having contractions but I cannot feel them at all so the doctor isn't really concerned. I still can't feel the baby at all but apparently it is moving around! I guess a little extra monitoring isn't doing any harm but boy oh boy is this all just odd.
  • @adeckard2014 I've failed a biophysical and NST before and had to go to the hospital also, just try to stay positive and try to relax! You are in the best place you can be right now!! Good luck!!!
  • I'm glad you went in and baby is moving.

Keep us updated, thinking of you and baby!
  • I'm glad they took your call seriously and everything looks okay! I'll be thinking of you and baby, hope all continues to go well!
