If your water broke naturally

My water has always been broken for me at the hospital so I'm curious - if your water broke naturally (before the hospital) when and where were you? I hear from so many people that they had just gone to the bathroom. Because of that I'll confess that every time I wake up MOTN I pray my water doesn't break haha!

When yours broke was it a slow leak or a gush? At the time or even in retrospect did you notice anything off? Like was the baby especially active or quieter? Had you had a longer day? So many questions bc I'm just very curious :)

Re: If your water broke naturally

  • Mine broke after going to be bathroom. I woke up in the middle of the night and had to pee. When I was done peeing I had a gush that just kept coming, there was no denying what it was! Because I had been asleep, I really don't remember what baby was doing at the time. This was my only sign of labor, I never had any contractions on my own.

  • I think mine broke in the shower, i'd been having contractions and decided to jump in before i went to the hospital and when i got out I kept think i was peeing myself cuz i was leaking. who knew? There was no big splash or anything.
  • Mine broke when I was at the hospital monitoring my contractions.  It was more of a slow leak.  Almost like I peed my pants without feeling the sensation of peeing.

  • Mine broke on the walk back to bed from going to the bathroom at 10pm at 37 weeks. It wasn't a gush- enough to run down both legs but I don't think any got on the carpet. With any sudden movements more would come out. Like when I bent over to pick up my hospital there was another small rush of fluid. My husband was at work at the time and I eventually just sat on the toilet until he got home!

Earlier that day I wasn't feeling great but my office was SUPER hot and I just attributed it to sitting in the heat for so long. I was about 1+ cm dialiated at the time but not having any noticeable contractions. Thankfully I went home a little early and was able to nap for the afternoon because little did I know I'd be up all night!

At home while I was cleaning. It was a big gush - felt like I peed myself. I had been 3cm and 75% for the past 3 weeks.
  • Slow break while I was in bed. Nothing got on my sheets though because it was so gradual.

  • About an hour after being admitted my water broke all over the hospital floor. It was better there than my house so it was perfect timing!

  • We're going out to eat tonight with a big group for my husband's bday and I'm paranoid mine will break...
  • DS - Broke when I was putting on mascara. Something kinda like Niagara falls.

DD1 - Broke when I got up to pee in the middle of the night. I had a pop sensation and then it steadily poured out over the next few hours.

DD2 - Pop sensation while showering that morning but nothing came out. Contractions started soon after and when I went to the hospital I was informed that somehow somewhere my water had broken. I am assuming my water broke in the shower but was a very small leak.

  • Mine broke while I was sleeping in the middle of the night. I don't remember the exact sensation because I was asleep and super confused but the GIF of the exploding water balloon man is pretty accurate. So much baby juice /:)

  • Forgive my ignorance, but if you are only dilated to 1cm and your water breaks, do they HAVE to induce you to get the labor going because your water has already broken? Does your water breaking put stress on the baby or something?
  • A lot of practices have a 24 hour rule. If labor doesn't start after that, they'll induce. Your body will keep making amniotic fluid even after your water breaks. There are plenty of women that go into labor and don't have to be induced. It's more that they worry about infection than fetal stress.

  • Got it. I just wasn't sure if it was something that was mandatory to be done once the water broke or what. I'm hoping I don't have to be induced so I was curious.

Mine broke naturally, but I was already at the hospital at that point, having contractions since midnight and got to the hospital about 4 AM. I had been walking laps around the hallways for about an hour and a half, and I had a painful contraction. I sat down in a nearby wheelchair to ride it out, and when I stood back up, I felt a little pop and a gush. That was about 6 AM. I went back to the bathroom to check, and sure enough, I was all wet.

  • My waters broke with DD at 12midnight as I got into bed. I wasn't due for another 4 days.
(it was a full moon that night)
I had a shower quickly & left after an hour for L&D. Contractions started about an hour and a half after my water broke. DD was born at half 11 in the morning.
  • Full on gusher at home for me. After the first one, I had 2 more big gushes too (once when I went to the toilet after my first big one, then another about 2 hours later).

I was a little more than 1cm and not having contractions when mine broke. The dr and nurses talked was about using pitocen to get things moving along probably around the 6- 8 hour mark but thankfully I went from 4-7 cm in an hour and they decided against it. (Long story short, my bladder was really full but since I had an epi I didn't feel it. Had they emptied it earlier, I probably would have progressed quicker)

Since my water had broken they didn't check my cervix as often as they normally would though to prevent infection.

Two of my friends had labor start the same way and their doctors immediately started them on pitocen, so maybe it's the doctors/ hospitals preference?
  • Mine broke at home - it was my birthday and everyone had just left and the house was a mess (they asked if they could clean up and I said no no it will be fine ) I layed down in bed and I heard a little Pop! It wasn't a gush of fluid or anything but constant stream for sure ! Contractions didn't start for me for another 4 hours or so my hospital sent me home to time contractions or come back in 24 to be induced (I wasn't progressing.. ) had him after 40 hours ... Brutal.. Hopefully this time is quicker lol

Good question @kwest1007. I felt, more so then heard, a pop sensation with my last two, but nothing with the first. From reading the other responses it does sound somewhat common. I guess it probably depends on what you are doing and/or if you are distracted/sleeping/etc.

Usually if you are group b strep positive they want to get you in right away. More leeway if you are negative but you still have to be induced within 24h usually,
