Baby Names

The name Lucy - how popular is it really?

Hi all, we've decided on the name Lucy for our daughter due in October. Last year it was #60-something on the SSN list, but I recently saw it on Nameberry in the top 10.

We're going to name her Lucy regardless, but just wondering how popular it is in real life. How many young Lucys do you know, or moms planning on using the name?

Thanks, and happy naming!

Re: The name Lucy - how popular is it really?

  • 4,257 girls were named Lucy last year.

You should look at your state list for a better idea of how popular it is in your area.

  • I know at least three that I can think of immediately.

         TTC #1 --- BFP #1 5/15, loss at 5 weeks --- BFP #2 12/15, loss at 4+3 --- RE testing 3/16 normal, still trying for our rainbow

  • I know none. I've been teaching five years and I haven't had a single one. I wanted to name my childhood dog Lucy, though.

The three I know are all under age 5. I wonder if you'll get an increase in a few years?

Also, my childhood dog was named Lucy :)

  • My daughter is a Lucy :)

I don't think it's crazy popular. I don't know any other children named Lucy. I've also been teaching for 11 years and have only had one student with the name.
  • I'm in the KY/IN area and I don't know any Lucys. I've worked in schools for years and can't recall having a single Lucy at any level from newborns to HS seniors.
  • My cat is named Lucy.

  • We have it on our list for any future girls (full name Lucille), because it is my honorary grandmother's name. I worry about the popularity of it as we tend to pick names A LOT higher on the SSA List.

In real life, I am in part of a moms group that meets once a week (around 100 moms), and there aren't any Lucy's. None of my friends, and none of my family have Lucy's. And we are pretty active in our area (soccer, swim lessons, dance class, etc), and don't know any Lucy's.

I teach K. Maybe this is my lucky year! Not a bad name, though.
  • I've been teaching for 10 years and only met one, and she wasn't in my class. I think it's becoming more popular, but I don't know any babies/toddlers named Lucy either.
  • I know of a couple, but I know more Rubys and Hazels. I think it totally depends on where you live, I dont know any young Emma's or Isabella's, and I know only one Sofia and those are supposed to be at the top of the list.
  • I personally don't know any Lucy's besides my grandmother's dog.
  • I have a niece Lucy who just turned 3.  I also have a student names Lucy who is 16.  That's all though.
  • I know 2 Lucy's in my son's toddler play group circles.

  • No Lucys in our circle, very sweet name.
  • I work in childcare and we haven't had any Lucy's in the time I've been working there (1.5 years). There weren't any at my last center either.

  • I love Lucy so much.

I doubt there will be six Lucys per kindergarten like there will be Sophias or *shudder* Madisons. So you're fine with it :)

I only know of one person naming her daughter Lucy in the last year and have only met one other, who is 18+.
  • A friend of mine named her daughter Lucy. She just celebrated her 3rd birthday. I don't know of any others .

  • I've taught 12 years and had two girls named Lucy. One was actually Luci, and it was short for Analucia.

I know a 3 year old Lucy and an almost 2 year old who is Lucille but goes by Lucy.

My niece is Lucy (almost two years old). A neighbor just had a Lucille, goes by Lucy. And another Lucy in the neighborhood is starting kindergarten this year. It's a great name!

Just a little aside for you. When my sister named her daughter Lucy, it was #66 on the ssa list. My sister (Melanie) thought that was funny because her name was #66 when she was born in 1981. If that's roughly your age, how many Melanies did you know growing up?
  • Also fyi, nameberry ranks popularity by how often a name is searched or liked on their site, not necessarily how often people name their child that name. So people may be liking that name, but not using it per say.
  • I think Lucy us one of those names that is on a lot of people's short lists, but isn't making the cut as frequently as some of the others.

I work in a high school with 0 Lucy's, but it was not as popular when they were born.
  • Lucy's pretty constantly popular in the UK - I know a few, of various ages.
  • If the link works, it's for a graph which shows the rise and fall of Lucy from 1880-2012. It doesn't show the Lucilles and Lucindas who use it as a nn. It also doesn't show 2012-2015, which of course is what we're talking about here.
