Labor and delivery at night...

I'm thirty six weeks and a ftm and the closer I get to labor and delivery I am getting more and more nervous about having him at night. I get so exhausted at night and I feel like I won't have enough energy at night to push him out if need be! I guess I'm sure the contractions and adrenaline will help me through... Any stm's that had a baby at night that can ease my mind???

Re: Labor and delivery at night...

  • Yes, I got started at about 7pm and gave birth about 5am. I recall feeling like I didn't have enough energy to push the baby out at 4am - just wanted to have a little nap more than anything! But yes I got there eventually - there's definitely lots of adrenaline and excitement to get you through the night.

I don't know how people manage 48 hour labours though!!

  • I went into active labor on a Saturday evening and had my daughter at about 10:35 am on Sunday.  I was up ALL NIGHT on Saturday (with really bad sleep on Friday night due to on and off contractions).  When it was time to push, there was no stopping me.  I wanted that baby out of me :)

Ask me about my exhaustion level/motivation a day or two later and it was a different story.

  • My water broke at 10pm and I had him at 6pm the next day! I was able to take a few cat naps in early labor but with nurses coming in and out, blood pressure cuff going on and off and excitement of the baby coming, it was almost impossible to sleep! It must have been the adrenaline that kept me going!
  • I labored through the night before being admitted that morning and DD didn't come until 1030pm.. if you are thinking about getting the epidural that will help you rest a little. Other than that it you will find the energy! Hopefully baby will not be stubborn and you won't have to push for an extended amount of time.

I never went to sleep, labored through the night, and DD was born about 6 the next evening. I agree with a major adrenaline rush keeping you going. You'll find energy you never imagined you had. It's amazing what our bodies can do. Plus, in those moments, you're going to want baby out. You'll be fine.
  • Both of mine were middle of the night babies after being awake all day working and such... And yes, I was exhausted! With DS1, i was literally falling asleep between pushing - I had an epidural.

    DS1 -6/25/11

    DS2 -3/23/13

    DD - 8/26/15

  • I went to sleep both times I was in labor until I got to about a 6? Then it is just uncomfortable and you want that baby out!
  • If you decide you want to get an epidural you can often nap before it is time to push (while waiting to be fully dilated). I woke up at 4:00 am on a Friday and knew that was going to be the day. I was admitted at 2:00 pm tht day and DS was born at 3:45 am the following day.
  • I was induced around 5pm and baby arrived at 4am. I tried to sleep around 1am after getting the epidural and I couldn't. I was way to amped and anxious. As soon as baby came I was ready to sleep though.
  • With my son my water broke at 11pm on Monday, I showered and cleaned the house and went to the hospital around 2am. He wasn't born until Wednesday at 440am. Adrenaline is a crazy awesome thing! Once he was ready I pushed him out in half an hour. You are exhausted but so motivated to be done and to meet your little one that the energy comes from somewhere!
  • I had all my kids at night. Apparently it's more common to go into labor at night (according to my MW). It is tiring but PP is right, adrenaline takes over and then you can nap when it's done :)
  • I went into labor at 11pm, got to the hospital around 2am, waa admitted after 4am (they made me walk until I dialated to a 4, I was in intense pain with back labor so no way was I going home!) and continued to labor for 19 hours... Fell asleep after the epidural, not sure how much time went by but I woke up and got pitocin to speed the contractions back up, then pushed her out before 7pm.

I was really sleepy for the next two days in the hospital! I didn't even bother with a shower or make-up, I just nursed and ate and slept one hour at a time whenever I could.
  • As I felt BH last night while settling into bed, flat out exhausted, I actually was wondering this same thing. If I was actually going into labor, how in the world would I make it through?! Glad to hear other mamas experiences.
  • When I was put in the hospital for my first set of contractions I got no sleep at all. They kept coming in and checking the baby and my contractions. Giving me meds every few hours. The IV would go off. Then I'd have to pee and be unhooked from everything. It was awful. If I could get an epidural at my house then I would totally deliver there. It would be so much more comfortable for me. But I'm sure it will be nothing like that for you because they were trying to stop my labor and not let me deliver. I'm sure you will do wonderful. Don't over think it. Your body knows what to do. :)
  • Yep. Labored though the night and had DS at 5:20am. Believe me-adrenaline kicks in and you will find the energy to get that baby out. H and I joke about how we've never slept again after that because you're so tired and then you have a NB to deal with :)

  • Every night as I get up to pee in the middle of the nigh,t I find myself thinking, "Oh man! What would I do if my labor started now? I'm so tired!" But I'm sure as said, the excitement and adrenaline kicks in when appropriate. And of course I would try my best to sleep during early labor at home.
  • I hope I go into labor at night!! My biggest fear is going into labor during the day while my husband is at work and laboring alone the 35 minutes it takes him to get home. I know that sounds wimpy but I'm scared!! My mom lives 35 minutes away too so I will be alone for awhile.

With my first I felt my first very mild contractions around 6am or so, and they got progressively worse throughout the day. We didn't end up going to the hospital until probably midnight and then I had her at 6am the following day - after nearly 3 hours of pushing. I DEFINITELY thought I couldn't do it MANY times during the pushing process - she was sunny side up so it was going SO SO slowly and I thought in my head that I'd be sitting there on that bed pushing this baby out FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. But then she came out :) And my overwhelming urge was to take a nap. It wasn't what I'd call pleasant, but you do it because you have to!
  • Thanks for everyone's input! It makes me feel better:)
  • I had DD1 during the night (10:15 pm-1:00am) and the adrenaline rush definitely got me through. I was completely zonked the next day though. I much prefer laboring and having baby during the day after a full night's rest...you know...if I got to choose ;)

  • I had a two day labor and slept threw contractions. I was exhausted in the end and I felt like a truck hit me.
  • It's most common to begin labor at night when things are settled and relaxed.
  • I'd love to be able to ease your mind, unfortunately I can't. I started having contractions around 9pm. I was in so much pain/discomfort that I didn't sleep a wink. And literally spent about 14 hours on and off the toilet. I was finally admitted around 2pm the next day. I had an epidural, but it didn't help me sleep. Around 9pm (now about 36 hours without sleep) I finally started pushing. By ten I was wishing they'd just cut him out of me. I literally felt like I had no energy left to give another push by the time he came out at 1036. I'm really hoping labor is a lot shorter this time because I can remember vividly how exhausted I was. No adrenaline here! I hope ALL you ladies have fast ad easy deliveries!
  • With my 7 year old I started having contractions at around 7 or 8 pm while making dinner. Went to the hospital at 11/1130 pm water broke on its own while transferring from triage to the birthing room and DS was born at 1:05 am. My DD was born in the afternoon (5:38pm). I think giving birth at night is way more comfortable and relaxing. I'm hoping this one comes late at night/early morning hours.
