August 2015 Moms

C section and what to bring

So we tried to flip my baby girl because she is breech but she's too stubborn (or lazy) and doesn't want to move. Now I'm scheduled for a c section on August 3rd and I'm just not sure what all I should bring. Has anyone on here had a c section? And what all did you bring to help you feel more comfortable? How long were you in the hospital for?

This is my first pregnancy and surgery ever so I'm very nervous.

Re: C section and what to bring

  • I don't bring anything special.

  • Its not a small surgery, but not terrible. You'll go in and get fluids, then go to the OR and probably get a spinal placed. This feels like a bee sting followed by a few electrical pulses, i think. The whole thing takes an hour or so, and then you head to recovery!!
The best thing you can do for a fast recovery is get up and move as soon as you can (assisted, of course). Since you will have a catheder you will probably be stuck in the hospital gown for a while, so it can be nice to have a robe so your backside isnt hanging out. Some people wear the gown and robe until they go home. I like my own clothes and find that high waisted yoga pants help keep a little compression on the wound which is comforting. Otherwise its just your normal hospital bag
    Good luck!

Coming out of the meds made me sweat horribly so this time I'm packing baby powder for my back. Hospital has none on the baby floor. But basically it's your standard bag. You will be in the hospital at least 2 nights, probably 3.
  • I don't bring anything special. This will be my 3rd section. But I agree you have to they up and move as soon as you can, even if it's a little uncomfortable. It's the difference in a week recovery and several weeks. Good luck, prayers for you and that sweet baby!
  • I didn't bring anything special either (my first was planned - she was breech). This will be my 2nd c-section. Normal hospital bag stuff. I was told to only bring chapstick without mineral oil in it (so like Burt's Bees) in case they needed to put me under quick. I was in the hospital for 3 nights with my daughter. I'm hoping for 2 this time. The doctor gave me the option to go home after 2 with my daughter but I wanted the extra day then cause I hadn't been able to get up and around as much as I wanted to before going home (and it was my first - so no anxious toddler at home to worry about).

FWIW, my daughter was breech cause she was tied up in her cord. They couldn't see it on the ultrasound either and didn't realize what was going on till they got in there. Your LO just may not be able to move. Either way, it wasn't that bad. I really have never had any bad feelings about it other than worrying a little more about possible rupture this pregnancy.

I had an emergency c section 2 weeks ago and my mom brought me my bag that had everything in it for my planned vaginal birth and I cant think of anything I needed her to bring on top of it besides 5 extra hands to help me sit up and lay down. I will say though, high waisted briefs that cover the incision will be your best friend. And if you have a belly band, I found that putting that on helped me feel a little more secure after surgery instead of the big bulky band they give you at the hospital.
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • I had my second section just 12 days ago. The first for my 3 year old I didn't move around much at all and the recovery took several week. This time my daughter is on Nicu so of course I've been shuffling back and forth to the hospital non-stop. Pain for the most part was gone in a week. There's a little lingering and I wouldn't go run a marathon or anything.

    Bring shower shoes and socks.

If you can, bring a maternity dress to wear home. Pants put pressure on your incision that can be painful. The dress will feel heavenly. Check out the CSection board on the Bump; they have great advice, including my tips for surviving a CSection. A lot of the prep you need to do is actually at home, not in the hospital!!!

I'm having my first c-section next Wednesday due to placenta previa (3rd child, previous 2 were vaginal) and the only thing I'm bringing that I didn't bring for my previous 2 births is a maxi dress to go home in because I've heard that is most comfortable. I also got a few packs of hanes high waisted undies for when I'm home, and my friend gave me 2 belly binders. Minor thing that I'm not sure is necessary, but I'm also taking probiotics for a few weeks prior to the section because I know you get antibiotics during surgery and that can make you more susceptible to thrush which I'd like to avoid. Oh, another thing I'm bringing is my hands free pumping bra because my baby will be a late-term preemie technically (36w6d is my section date) so there is a chance they'll have to go to the NICU and I'll need to start pumping.

I also always bring my boppy and my own pillows, and my own black cotton robe.
  • Scheduled for my 3rd section on Aug 4. For myself I packed 2 big night gowns, a few nursing bras and tanks, 1 pair of very loose gaucho pants, slippers, a robe, flip flops for the shower, toiletries and make-up, and a loose maxi dress for going home in.
  • I had a c/s last time. The things I needed the most were a really good thick lotion and Chapstick- the hospitals are so dry and the medication during surgery can make you really itchy. High waisted yoga pants, like the Victoria secret ones that fold up or down. Undies with a little higher waistband. Flip flops because of the fluids received during surgery your feet will most likely be really swollen for a week or so. Nursing tanks/bras. Bathrobe. Pretty much just pack enough for 4 days instead of 1-2 days to be on the safe side.
Team Pink! Baby Girl due 8.2.15

  • Thank you everyone! Im gonna bring things like my charger and stuff to do while I'm there as well. I know I won't be bored cause I'll be with my little one but just in case. I'm really excited but super nervous all in one. I just really like the fact that I know when she will be here so I can plan around it and mentally prepare myself.

Also, be prepared that if you're a scheduled csection, you might not actually make your scheduled time. If someone on the floor needs an emergency section ahead of you, you might be delayed. So you are definitely right to bring something to keep you occupied!!

Yes! I asked my OB at my last appointment how often scheduled c-sections are actually on time, her response "Rarely to never! Expect at least a 30 minute delay" (which in doctor speak is more like an hour)
  • Oh I know. The doctor has already gave me a heads up on it. Thanks Hun!
