Top 10 Hacks for the Working, Breastfeeding Mother

Since many of us will be back at work and pumping eventually, I thought I'd pass this along.

# 3- 4 were lifesavers when I was pumping for my first! I didn't want to waste precious time at work washing pump parts and they never dried in time anyway. And I wish I knew about #6. I'll have to try it this time.

Re: Top 10 Hacks for the Working, Breastfeeding Mother

  • Those were great.  I did such a bad job pumping for my first once I went back to work last time, and want to be better about it this time.  I think having a hands-free bra so I can do other things with my hands will help.  Has anyone used one of these?

For cleaning pump parts, I bought some of those steam bags, which I have used to wash them to prep for this baby and they seem pretty easy/low maintenance.  I just did soap and water last time, which was a pain.  Also for getting water out of the tubes, someone on here once recommended swinging them quickly in the air (or something) and said that got the water out really well.

  • I had 3 sets of pump parts and just put the used ones in a wet bag after each session. I didn't trust the community fridge at work. It was a lot of part washing at night though, which was usually my husband's job.

I'd say another one it to block off your pumping time on your calendar and stick to it. Seems obvious, but even with my calendar blocked I was way too accommodating moving my pumping sessions around to make it to meetings. I'm going to try harder to stick to the schedule I set this time a round. There were lots of days a session got skipped due to being too busy to make it to the lactation closet.

For hands-free pumping, go to Target and get a $10 sports bra. Cut holes in the bra and insert pump. Voila! Way cheaper than the $80+ hands free bras I've seen that go with a breast pump. Worked perfectly for DD.
  • I did not wash my parts at work either. I kept them in Tupperware. I also kept Medela sanitizing wipes in my pumping bag to clean them in a pinch.

  • #6 never fully got water out of tubes for me and who wants to wait for a pump to run for 5 minutes. Hold both tubes at the half way point and swing them around like you're at a rave. The centrifugal motion makes the droplets fly out.
