Pain from breastfeeding

baby is 2 weeks old today and i was just wondering how long the pain will last? The sides of my nipples are VERY tender anything that touches or rubs against them hurts. Does anyone know how long until my nipples are used to breastfeeding?

Re: Pain from breastfeeding

  • The majority of the time sore nipples are the result of a poor latch. Some tenderness early on is normal but I'd think your pain should have subsided by now. Try cupping your breast with your one hand (right breast, right hand) and holding babys head With the other. Don't be shy about really smooshing them on there. You want as much of your areola to disappear as possible. You want to avoid baby suckinv on your nipple like a straw. If you feel like latch isnt great, pull his cheek a bit to break the seal and try again. Lanolin can provide nipple relief for sore, cracked nipples and breast milk can also help. Squirt a little out and let it air dry. Other professional help options to consider are LA Leche League (you may have a local chapter) or a lactation consultant.

  • My midwife said, think of your breast like a big sandwich that you gotta hold really well to get in baby's mouth. Good luck, mama. Don't give up!
  • Breastfeeding shouldn't hurt. Is the latch correct? Do you have any cracking or blisters? Try placing olive or coconut oil on your nipples after you nurse as it has natural healing elements and wont clog your ducts like lanilin will. This is my 4th babyand no discomfort but with my 1st it was only s few days of sensitivity.
  • Mine are finally feeling better and my baby is a month old. I'm just barely able to shower without holding my nipples so the water doesn't hurt them!

  • My baby is 3 weeks old and mine are finally feeling better. I worked on her latch but honestly I think it takes a few weeks for the nipples to get used to it...just my opinion. Hang in there.

My baby is 2 weeks old and my nipples are just now use to the latch. It took repetative work to get my baby to latch correctly, this is key.

Try coconut oil or a nipple ointment to help w cracking and tenderness. But you may want to contact a lactation consultant to ensure you are properly latching.
  • I had tender nipples until baby was around 2 weeks old. Thankfully our hospital offers a free walk-in lactation clinic. If you have access to a lactation consultant I highly recommend taking advantage of it!! They help with positioning, check the latch, and provide great encouragement!
