2nd Trimester

Pregnancy vitamins

im in the uk, and I'm almost 14 weeks. I took folic acid until I was 12 weeks which was normal, but no doctors or midwife has told me I should be taking any vitamins or anything to assist the health of baby during pregnancy. People have asked why I arnt but I havnt been made aware that I should?

Should I just buy some and start taking them? What are others on?

Re: Pregnancy vitamins

  • I started taking prenatal vitamins before I even got pregnant.  Once my husband and I started trying to conceive, I was taking them pretty regularly.  My OB doesn't write me a prescription for vitamins, I just go to Target or Walmart to buy mine.  I'd go to a drug store or other store such as Walmart and buy yourself a bottle.  You don't have to get them from your doctor, and even though they are not telling you to take any vitamins, they are not going to hurt you or the baby, so you might as well. The folic acid is important, so it's great that you are taking that.  Why have you stopped taking them? You said you took them until you were 12 weeks.  The brand that I take is, Naturmade and they make a huge line of different vitamins.

I'm 19 weeks tomorrow and i've been taking prenatal vitamins with Folic acid AND DHA since the start.

And my doctor told me to continue taking them until after i finish breastfeeding.

Between cravings for random junk and aversions to everything substantial, vitamins are essential. I'm getting zero protein or iron right now other than a few irony veggies (pun intended) but most veggies i don't like much either these days so i don't get them often. The iron in the vitamins is essential for me, for example.
  • I take a script from my doc because they are free through my insurance. Otherwise I would be taking an OTC prenatal. My doc advised me to start taking 1,000 my of calcium too since I don't eat or drink much dairy. She said it's the equivalent of 24 oz of milk per day.
  • Folic acid is to only be taken up until 12 weeks, I shouldn't take it after then. What's the best vitamins to take then?
  • Incorrect, you should be taking a daily prenatal vitamin that contains folic acid, 400 mcg to be exact. You really should go out today and purchase a bottle of vitamins, if they look too big for you to swallow, purchase a gummy version and read the directions. A lot of gummy versions require you to take two at a time and not just one.

From WebMD: Folic acid is a pregnancy superhero! Taking a prenatal vitamin with the recommended 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid before and during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects of your baby's brain and spinal cord. Take it every day and go ahead and have a bowl of fortified cereal, too.

  • Please do more research. Folic acid continues to be important even past twelve weeks. Prenatal vitamins are important for the healthy development of your child and they also prevent your body from being completely depleted of nutrients while your child develops.

Go to the store and pick out a prenatal vitamin. It will literally say "prenatal" on the bottle and it will likely contain most of what you need in one pill. Mine doesn't include DHA or enough calcium so I'm also taking additional supplements of those.

    Please do some research.
  • ^^ Also DHA. You need to take that. It's not as vital as folic acid but it's pretty damned important.
  • I havnt researched atall, I was told by both doctor and 2 midwives that I should not take folic acid past 12 weeks, and it's in my pregnancy guide aswell so I don't want to continue taking it as that's what I've been told. I just don't know which kind of vitamins I should be taking throughout my pregnancy
  • This is starting to smell like MUD.

You're misinterpreting what the package says. It's MOST vital during the first few months of baby's development but that doesn't mean you should stop taking it after those first few months. Baby is still developing and still needs those nutrients. I don't know where your doctor and midwives are getting their information but either they're wrong, or you're misinterpreting what they are saying the way you're misinterpreting the folic acid package.

Do the research. You say you haven't done any, but you need to.

Also, my obstetrician recommends that ALL women, pregnant or not, take folic acid supplements. Read the above link for a few clues as to why. It's not just great for baby's health, but your own as well.
