Agonizing over Elmeda

edited July 2015 in Baby Names
I have really wanted to name my daughter (if she IS going to be a daughter) after my dearest aunt, Elmeda. Elmeda was the most beautiful, most regal, sweetest and kindest lady you could ever hope to meet. Sadly she passed away a few years ago from complications due to Crohn's disease (runs in our family i'm afraid :( )

Now that i'm pregnant, my desire to name my daughter Elmeda is at war with my desire NOT to name my daughter Elmeda (since despite her beauty as a human being, i rather don't like it)

Middle name is out. My Chinese in-laws get that slot.

Not entirely sure what to do here.

Btw, it's pronounced "El-MEE-dah" I'd be the family hero if I did this. The kid would be the apple of the family's eye. And if she turned out to be like her great aunt (Her mother is the spitting image and personality of Auntie Elmeda, after all ;) ) that would be the best thing ever.

  • I'm not sure if this would be an option for you, but in my family (we're Jewish) it's common for the first initial to be honoring a relative who passed. You could choose another E name you like better and still be honoring your sweet aunt.

My dad's family are Jewish and so this COULD work out for us. My auntie elmeda, dad's sister, was named by my nana after an actress. She misheard the name pronunciation and a brand new name was born haha.

That is, incidentally, how i got Elizabeth, after her, and after my aunt Elizabeth (nn "Betty")

The way I was initially saying it, I didn't like- "el-ma-da" is how I was saying it. Reading your correct pronunciation is better but I still don't love it. What about finding a shorten similar sounding name? Like Meyah - "mee-ya". Or I guess even Mia..?
I know.. don't worry, you can hate it :) I am trying so hard to want this name but it's not happening. Even with the wonderful associations i have with it.
  • Find another E name and just tell everyone why the name starts with E.
  • Names that are close:

    Alma
    Eliza
    Eloise
    Ella
    Emma
    Emeline
    Medina
    Meda
  • I actually kind of like it and I love the association!!

I agree with this. Find another name with the first initial E.

  • Love it! The name is not my style, but the meaning is awesome! You could use Amelia, which sounds similar or use a nn like Mina or Ellie. Crohns runs in my fam too. My dad just had part of his intestines out so I feel you on this!

  • I'll throw in that I have name regret over not using my grandfather's name when we named our son. I chickened out and I wish I hadn't!
  • Were you the poster who agonized over the name Sarah?

  • I actually like it. Different in a good way. You could call her Elle or Ellie?
  • Is the name it was taken from "Imelda"? It has a gorgeous meaning-powerful fighter. You could go with something inspired by that such as Evanna, Evin, Louisa, or Madison
  • What about Emilia?

  • Also, while I think it's sweet to honor family, I'm not a fan of the name per say. It very much reminds me of Elsaba. Wicked, anyone?
