Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Swaddle frustration!

I'm a new mom and I am struggling getting my baby to nap and sleep at night. My little guy is 3 weeks and hates being swaddled but, his arms seem to wake him up most of the time. Also I want to use the happiest baby on the block calming techniques but he won't let me swaddle him. He only sleeps 2 and half hours stretches and I am so tired. He also gets very overtired and fussy. I bought a halo swaddle sack but it is so big it rides up in his face and I worry he can't breath. Any suggestions for getting baby to nap/ sleep without being swaddled? Or any swaddling advice?

  • Also, what does your LO sleep in at night? Crib, with you, bassinet?

I used a Rock 'n' Play for this baby and it was a lifesaver. She slept great in it. My first kid was an awful sleeper and I wonder if he would have been better if I had a RnP back then.

I also think it's key to try and get them to sleep right when they first show signs of being tired. When you do go to put your LO down for a nap or bed at night, do whatever you have to do in order to get him to sleep. Don't worry about bad habit or any of that, just get him to sleep. I have always fed both of my kids right before bed and naps and if they fall asleep eating, fine. In the bed they go. If you need to rock, shush, feed, whatever...just do it.

  • Have you tried swaddling him with his arms out? We also have the Halo sleep sack and it rides up if his arms aren't out. He likes it better that way anyway.
  • I bought a swaddle me blanket today that seems to fit better than the halo sack so hopefully my little guy will sleep better tonight.
  • That is how I use the halo also but my LO moves his hands a ton and wakes up.
  • Thank you! My little guy sleeps in both. However lately the bassinet cause the blankets ride up in his face and I worry when he is in the rock and play. I'm learning those tired cues. Hopefully the swaddle me blanket works tonight. My LO is only 7 lbs and they only had one size at the store. We will see!
  • Oh my gosh! I have the same problem except my LO is six weeks. Stil haven't found a solution but just wanted to let you know you aren't alone! Hang in there!

I wouldn't put blankets in with him. Just a tight swaddle in the RnP shouldn't be a problem.
  • Hi - I couldn't get any swaddling blanket to work - my little guy would bust right out but didn't sleep well without being swaddled. The one that has worked for us is the Miracle Blanket swaddle - it has literally been a miracle. Once and a while he will fuss while getting swaddled but mostly the miracle blanket calms him down immediately and he sleeps so well.  We got ours on Amazon!

If he is still in newborn sizes get a swaddle pod. So easy and really traps the arms!
  • Have you used a SwaddleMe? They can be velcro'd very tightly. You want to make sure baby's arms are completely straight when you swaddle, or else they can just wiggle free.

    This is all normal.

Frustrating, but normal. We used the sleep pods for my son.

  • I suggest you check out woombies... My first little one was an escape artist and regular swaddles never helped. Woombies are awesome and escape proof. Plus they're just easier to use.

  • I'm having the same problem. My baby goes through long stretches of being awake. He just went to sleep after being awake for 5 hours. He will also most likely only get 10 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours. Yesterday he slept 12. I just spent the last 6 hours doing the 5 S along with feeding him and changing him. I don't know what else to get him to sleep sooner.
  • My LO is 3 weeks old.
