37 wks and she is not wanting out

I had my 37 wk checkup today and the doctor was concerned that LO is still so high up. I'm also not dilated or effaced at all but that's not concerning.
Doc ordered an US next week to help determine if she's too big to fit thru my birth canal. Then we will discuss options, c section being the most obvious. Has anyone else had a similar situation? Did another option work for you?

Thx!

  • I'm 37 weeks and baby is head down but, hasn't dropped either. The dr did a scan and the baby isn't to big and doesn't see any issues. It's a little nerve wracking since 'most' babies have dropped by now...
  • Hi! Yes doc said her head might be too big to even make it thru the larger top portion of my pelvis.
  • 38 weeks with a high baby. I am not effaced or dialated and no concerns from my doctor. Like people stated you have 3 weeks left for things to progress. However, it couldn't hurt to see if your pelvis is too small to handle labor. But large babies are born vaginally everyday. Not sure why you would have a c-section?

Huh? You still have 3 weeks for baby to drop. DS didn't drop at all until 2 days before I went into labor at 40 weeks 3 days. I don't understand.

I don't get it either. Most babies don't drop until right before labor. OP, I'd be questioning your doctor.

  • I am enjoying the fact that baby hasn't dropped yet. So much more comfortable. It's not uncommon for FTMs to not have baby engage into their pelvis until labor begins. I wouldn't get too concerned yet.
  • I'm pretty confused. Why wouldn't the doctor let you attempt to deliver vaginally anyway rather than just scheduling a cesarean?
It's extremely rare for a mother's pelvis to actually be too small to deliver their child. is there really too much of a risk to try?

I would not be worried about the baby not dropping yet. My 1st, didn't drop until I dilated to 10 cms. And he was 41.5 weeks.

My best friend just attempted to deliver her baby vaginally and unfortunately he didn't fit (as they expected). He ended up getting stuck. Was rushed in for emergency c-section (which was very complicated because all of her pushing had him so far down) and he came out code blue. Thankfully he is doing great now!! I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time but it's def scary!

Yes! He's 11weeks now and they still monitor his breathing (he has abnormal, irregular respiratory rates) but he's doing very well overall and it seems to be improving! They've done numerous tests on his heart and lungs and everything seems fine! :-)

And I should add in, he was only 7lbs, 8oz.

Extremely rare. Hoping your doctor gives you a much better reason OP for scheduling a c section other than how much baby is engaged at 37 weeks.

  • I will say that there really are some doctors out there who just like to get to scheduling that CS because it makes the birth predictable. I paid attention to Caesarian rates when choosing my OB practice and my hospital and have engaged in meaningful conversations with all of the doctors in my practice to understand their perspectives on childbirth. I know which doctor is more-likely to want to induce me, which one would like to schedule the C section, and which one(s) are supportive of my birth plan.

There are so many stories out there from moms who at the time just put all of their trust into their doctor and realized later that their L&D experience didn't have to end in a cesarean.
  • My baby dropped last week....right at 37 weeks, but its not like I'm expecting to go into labor yet.  It really is a crapshoot.

  • I'm in the same boat and other added factors.
  • I wouldn't worry, you have 3 weeks to go until your due date. She probably hasn't dropped because she's not ready to come yet.. My little girl bobs up and down everyday. Yesterday she was low, today she is high. I enjoy the changes because one day I can breathe, and the next I don't need to pee every two seconds. Let her find her way. She'll be ok.
  • Don't be that concerned at this point. My baby didn't "drop" until the night before I delivered. I was 38 weeks 1 day when he arrived and he "dropped right at 38 weeks! Not all babies engage until active labor. Everyone is different don't let the doctor scare you (he is a jerk in my eyes) into thinking you need a C section when you have 3 WHOLE WEEKS before your due date. Docs can be such asses sometimes. Sorry you are stressed. Hope all turns out well.
  • Baby doesn't want out yet. 37 weeks is early term.....

  • I would be questioning your doctor's motives for bringing up a c-section already. It is extremely unlikely that your body will allow your baby's head to grow too big to fit in your pelvis. Nature isn't stupid.

I'm surprised at 37 weeks your doc is feeding you such worrisome information. You've got 3-4 weeks to go before you NEED to deliver your baby. Dropping can happen overnight. I wouldn't worry. Your doctor sounds like a nervous nelly.
My first baby dropped at 41 weeks and i delivered 4 days later, and he fit just fine. I had a small tear, but that's normal
  • There are some c-section happy doctors out there but remember, as everyone always says, no one on here is a doctor. I would ask lots of questions to your doctor and look into their c-section rates. Maybe even get a second opinion. As someone who's seen the scare that can occur when a baby doesn't fit (and when the doctors were hesitant about a vaginal delivery because they suspected it; yet they respected the mother's wishes to try).. I would be certain to ask many, many questions and do my research.
