I am considering delaying the cutting of the cord. Anything that is recommended my baby will have done. I am putting faith in my doctors because I am not educated enough to say what my son does or doesn't need. I'm an accountant not a doctor.
This is a really good thread, I'm so glad you started it as I am a FTM who needs to learn about all this stuff. After reading all of your posts I started googling & happened upon a great site written by a Pediatrician & Mother, with really helpful info on writing a birth plan & there are links to other useful articles. It answered a big question I had about delayed cord clamping & banking the cord blood, (FYI- yes, you can do both!) Lots of other great stuff too! Hope the other FTMs find it as useful as I did!
I have sensitives to chemicals and scents, which is the main idea behind delaying his bath and using my own soap. I am a tech at the hospital where I am delivering and we had to use baby soap one night when we ran out of the regular adult soap. I couldn't believe how strong scented and harsh it was. I couldn't imagine using it on an infant. It was so harsh on the elderly patients thin skin. I felt terrible using it on them.
I'm curious if you have an idea yet what soap you'll try? I have skin sensitivities and my son does as well. CeraVe Baby worked well for us, especially over the winter when we were both broken out in eczema.
I'm not sure yet. I have heard CeraVe and Burt's Bees were decent products. There is a line called Earth Mama Angel Baby, but I would have to buy from Amazon and it's pricey, so I wouldn't try it unless the other options don't work.
We've tried Burt's Bees with some luck. Currently with the eczema cleared up we're using The Honest Co.
Several of my classmates last term were midwives and some of our faculty attend home births. While not appropriate for high risk pregnancies it is a wonderful and safe option for mothers that want to go this route. I would always encourage you to ensure that you are using a certified midwife. I am much more inclined to recommend certified nurse midwives as they have valuable experience. If you choose a home birth make sure you fully check out your chosen provider and feel 100% comfortable with them and their expertise.

This! Women who choose home birth are typically very educated about their choices and do the appropriate research. We don't just decide we don't like hospitals so let's have a baby at home! There are back up plans and emergency transfer plans just in case.
I have a very low risk pregnancy and live a block away from the local hospital. Unfortunately not the one we where we will deliver. The only reason I would be nervous about a home birth is mainly due to this being my first pregnancy. I don't know what to expect, how well I will labor or anything really. If my second pregnancy goes this well and this baby's birth is complication free then I would absolutely love to have a home birth. I would feel more comfortable at home even though I know all the staff at the maternity ward, as I work at that hospital. They are great people. It's just so hard to get comfortable in a hospital and get the rest needed.
However, if a woman is uncomfortable birthing at home then it's probably not the way to go. Anxiety is not what should be felt while bringing your baby into the world. There is nothing wrong with hospital births, either. Nobody is saying one is superior.
V. interesting thread! I plan on doing everything recommended by my doctor. I am also interested in delaying the eye ointment (not for very long, surely) @CMDD. I think I might freak out if I can't hold him right away. I imagine it will all be a blur though. I'd like to snuggle for a few minutes before the docs and nurses have to go about their business. As for vaccinations, I don't see what'd be wrong with getting it all out of the way asap. But I haven't done much research in the way of the delayed schedule-- all I know is that he will be getting ALL of them, for his sake and the sake of the other children in my community.
This isn't a thread to argue what is right, but how we do things and our reason behind them There is no perfect way to have a baby, we can only do what we consider best for our families and babies.

I didn't realize anyone was arguing.
I didn't say anyone was. It was just a reminder for all to keep things civil and judgement-free.
@nik6499 I like the idea of trying. I'd like to go as long as I can without, so I can still move and change positions-- but I anticipate that I'll want it. If it's anything like ruptured ovarian cyst pain I know I will ask for it (I've had some bad ones-- ER gave me morphine once!)
I will trust my OB during my labour. I have no idea what to expect even after working in postpartum. I just trust that my OB will know what's best for my baby and I. I have anxiety and know a home birth would never work for me. The idea of being in labour at home just makes me uncomfortable. I want to be surrounded by epidurals just in case I choose to have one!
With Emily, I wanted to go as long as I could w/o an epidural and that's what I did. I don't remember how long I went, but it was at least overnight the first night after I was induced. I'll do the same this time.
I love this thread. It may sound like a strange thing to say, but this is how I imagine The Bump 'should' be - everyone is sharing and being respectful of different views. I want to start the conversation with my OB at my next visit about her general procedures, at which time I'll be 23 weeks, so this has given me some great food for thought.

Thanks, ladies!
I am going in for my 20 week appointment in a few days and I wanted some food for thought as well! I am a planner and love being informed on my decisions, but this is an area foreign to me. I don't believe in there being one certain way that is best. Moms should do what is comfortable with them.

Just an FYI, these comments come off as very condescending toward the adults on this board. No one was arguing, therefore your "reminder" is unnecessary and quite frankly, unappreciated.
I'm sure this wasn't your intention, but I felt I needed to let you know how it comes across.

Do any larger stores carry the Honest Co. products? I live pretty far away from anything except Target and Walmart. Lol. I was hoping to stick with products I could find there or else they would have to be ordered.

Target carries some things. But the honest website runs great deals and specials.

I've seen honest at target lately! Also check Amazon or you can do their free trial and monthly delivery service. They have lots of different options to customize.
We're thinking about registering at Target or Babies R Us for the few items we still need. That's awesome that they sell them there! I'm hoping I won't end up with a ton of baby products I can't use, so I'll register for the soap I want maybe people will get the hint. Worst case I'll just donate the soaps and lotions to a shelter that I can't use.

I know everyone already answered but I've gotten all the soaps I mentioned at either Walmart or Target. My mom got us some of The Honest Co wash at Costco as well. Cera Ve baby I was only able to find at Walmart, but all others Target carries.
This actually just came back up for us today with my son. My dad came by to visit and it seems DS broke out from his soap. We are trying to figure out one he could use when he knows he's coming to visit.
Added- we found trials and samples helpful, even with laundry detergent. It didn't feel like such a waste then if we tried it out and it didn't work.

Maybe get him a bottle of what your son uses. It might be designed for children, but it is still soap. Would he be willing?

I plan to offer it, even a bottle we already have if he won't be using it all the time. I don't think he'd mind at all if it avoided giving the baby a rash. The Honest Co advertises as being for the whole family so it's especially one I wouldn't feel bad about suggesting. Regular Cera Ve or Cetaphil as well.
I mostly wanted to mention it because if your little one ends up sensitive like mine you may have the same thing come up.
And I appreciate that I'm hoping he won't have such bad reactions, but I do as well as both my parents and a few siblings. It's better to be prepared.
I understand that. I only thought of it with my first pregnancy because I have some issues. I really didn't think my son would be as sensitive as he is, so in hindsight I'm really glad we prepared like he would be anyway. Although a few things it was just so I wouldn't break out using them with him. I had a horrible time with diaper rash ointments breaking me out even with washing my hands immediately after.
